Akhilesh Yadav to gift new university to Kanpur

KANPUR: On a day-long visit to Kanpur on Sunday, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said a new university would soon be established in Kanpur. Saying that education was an important focus area for his government, Akhilesh was responding to demands made by Kalyanpur MLA Satish Kumar Nigam. Saying Knpur played a key role in essaying Samajwadi Party's success in the assembly elections, the chief minister also said all development activities in Kanpur would be taken up on priority basis. Responding to demands for an additional hospital in the city, Akhilesh also said the construction would begin just as soon as the necessary land was acquired for the purpose. Akhilesh was speaking on the sidelines of a private function at Chaudhary Ramgopal Singh Law College in Meherban Singh Ka Purwa hamlet of Kanpur, where he inaugurated the law college, laid the foundation stone for a bigger auditorium and started electrification in nine villages, including Pipauri, Imlipur, Madanpur, Kharagpur, Igra and Fatehpur Gohi. Yadav announced that the work of construction of Mandhana-Bhauti bypass would commence soon. He also announced for the widening of Shivli Marg with Rs 12 crore, development of GT Road with an aid of Rs 3.40 crore, setting up of Rajkiya Balika Vidyalaya and a neurology centre in Kalyanpur, speeding up the work of construction of bridge over the Ganga in Bithoor (780 metres of bridge already constructed), construction of several flyovers in the city, including an elevated road between Phoolbagh and Chunniganj, speedy construction of bridge over Pandu river, linking Mandhana with Kesco for power supply and degree college for girls in Bithoor. The CM assured to revive Parag Milk Board which is presently under huge losses. He also accepted Sukhram Singh Yadav's demand of setting up of a large hospital and an international stadium like Green Park in Meherban Singh Ka Purwa. The CM announced that Ganga barrage would be connected to Shuklaganj which would facilitate movement of vehicles between Kanpur and Lucknow. Earlier, the programme began with the lighting of the lamp in the hall of the law college in presence of many Samajwadi Party leaders. Former MP and veteran SP leader Harmohan Singh Yadav, ministers Shiv Kumar Beria and Aruna Kori, MLAs Munindra Shukla, Satish Nigam and Irfan Solanki, MP from Fatehpur Rakesh Sachan, former chairman of Legislative Council Sukhram Singh Yadav, former MP Harmohan Singh Yadav, vice-chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University Ashok Kumar, former V-C of CSMU S S Katiyar, protocol minister Abhishek Mishra, Mohit Chaudhary, Varun Yadav, Balwant Singh and others were present.Hundreds of students of nursing and paramedics and BEd were also present. Yadav met the students and felicitated the meritorious ones with mementos and awards. The CM was welcomed by former chairman of Legislative Council and co-ordinator of the function Sukhram Singh Yadav.In his address, Yadav highlighted the priorities of his

government to provide people with basic amenities like roads, power, drinking water and health services. He received a huge round of applause when he said that Kanpur has to be taken care of as its people have supported the party during the Assembly elections. "We will have to take care of Kanpur. Despite major challenges like power-cuts and lack of other facilities, this city is doing export business worth Rs 6,000 crore and giving highest revenue to the state. The government is committed towards its development," he said. The capacity of the Panki power house would be increased to sort out the issue of power-cuts. "The previous government has not worked in the direction of improving the ailing power scenario in the state. Transformers of poor quality were procured by them which are unable to take load when power supply is given. Therefore, it is the priority of the government to provide power to the city for which we will be purchasing good transformers and improve the power distribution system," the CM declared. He said that his government has blacklisted 10 companies who provided substandard transformers during the previous regime. Shifting his focus towards poor condition of roads, the CM said that his government has to make the city roads motorable.

Expedite Shuklaganj link road project: DM

KANPUR: Ganga Barrage-Shuklaganj link road may be completed by June 30. The interest being taken by the administration had forced the officials to complete the task in time. In a meeting held recently, the district magistrate had directed the officials to complete the road timely. Kanpur Development Authority had presented the design of entry gate at Kanpur end. The acting commissioner asked the KDA secretary to prepare an estimate of design. He had also asked to identify the land for entry gate at both end of the link road. For identification of land for entry gate, he directed the officials to constitute a four-member committee. Regarding plantation on both sides of the link road, the officials of forest department had informed that saplings would be planted. Tree guards would be erected to protect the saplings. The district magistrate advised the officials to execute the work under MNREGA. Public works department officials apprised that more than 80% work had been finished. Kanpur had part of 3.5-km while Unnao had remaining 6.7-km of Shuklaganj link road. The officials also complained about lack of funds.

The district magistrate assured them that he would take initiative in this regard and write a letter to the state government. He had directed the UPSIDC to install railings and poles on both sides of the road.

City to have a boat club by next year

KANPUR: The dream of a boat club in the river Ganga that the city dreamt two years ago on June 21, has now turned into reality. According to Neeraj Srivastava coordinator of a high power technical committee, the idea of a boat club and river sports was generated in the year 2005 after the former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav inaugurated the Ganga Barrage. Due to poor response from the state government it could not take shape then. However, recently a team of experts consisting of Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association's V S Kushwaha and Colonel V S Negi visited the site and opined it as an ideal place for river sports and boat club. Neeraj stated that in the first phase construction of VIP ghat, floating jetty, and an approach road would be constructed while in second phase boat shed, office, gloss box, kayaks for one to four passengers, and canoeing boats, speed and motor boats, sail boats would be arranged for the club. Adequate security measures would also be arranged for the club. Apart from this a national level coaching centre would also be established in the third phase of the project where kids of boatmen and swimmers would be coached by the national level coaches. Neeraj expressed his hope that the boat club would come into existence by the next year. The district administration has already decided to develop the barrage as a tourist spot. The construction work at VIP ghat at Ganga barrage has started and work for barrage from Lucknow via Unnao road is gearing up. The public works department (PWD) is levelling the road site area and it is expected that laying of 3.5 kilometer long road at the barrage site would be completed by June 10, 2013. Thereafter, the irrigation department would start its work, said sources.TNN

Rs 25 cr for Ganga Barrage project

KANPUR: Minister of state for urban development Satish Mahana said that the state government had released Rs 25 crore out of Rs 68 crore for the first phase of the Ganga Barrage project.

This would ensure supply of potable water of 200 million litre per day (MLD) by October. Talking to reporters at the Ganga Barrage project site on Tuesday, Mahana said: "The project was initiated in 1995 on technical recommendations of Central Water Commission. The project is based on the model devised by the Irrigation Research Department, Roorkee, and Central Water and Energy Centre, Pune." Mahana said that the cost of the project scheduled to be completed by 2000 was estimated at Rs 173 crore. However, due to the delay in release of funds the project would now cost around Rs 309.18 crore, provided it was completed by June 2004, he added. The project, to be completed by June 2004, would control the flow of the Ganges and solve the problem of frequent traffic jams on Delhi-Lucknow road. This would also give impetus to Gangotri Housing Scheme, planned on 1,600 hectare on both sides of the barrage, he added.

Work on Kanpur, Lucknow road restarts

KANPUR: The stalled work on Ganga barrage to Lucknow road had started again. The construction agency is expecting to finish the job in next three months. On the priority list of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, this project road had to be constructed from Ganga Barrage to Lucknow via Unnao. According to sources, this new road would help the vehicles to cover the distance between Kanpur and Lucknow in less time. The construction was delayed as between the barrage and Unnao, there was narrow culvert. The state government had released additional sum for broadening of culvert and the contractor had started the work. Divisional commissioner Shalini Prasad had given green signal after bhomi poojan on January 3, this year. Work was going on in full swing but a narrow culvert had halted the progress. The Lucknow-based construction company demanded extra money to widen the culvert. The work was stopped for about one month. Now, it had restarted as the state government had released the funds. TNN

Kanpur to get outer ring road to bypass traffic blues


The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is all set to develop a four-lane outer ring road along the periphery of Kanpur with an aim to prevent traffic congestion in the industrial city caused by long-distance heavy vehicles.

Sources said that the state government is considering a proposal to extend the industrial area of Kanpur, and according to NHAI officals, the outer ring road would be greatly benefit it. The NHAI has already received approval from Kanpur and Unnao-Shuklaganj development authorities on the proposed alignment of ring road. In the alignment, the consultant has proposed three major bridges, 13 minor bridges, seven flyovers and nine Railway Over Bridges (ROB) on the outer ring road. Two major bridges would be on Ganga.

KDA plans to develop Ganga Barrage as tourist spot

KANPUR: In a bid to develop the Ganga Barrage as a tourist destination in the city, the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) plans to come up with a host of tourist amenities at the barrage. In this regard, KDA vice-chairman Tanveer Zafar Ali and secretary Shakuntala Gautam inspected the Ganga Barrage on Tuesday and spotted a piece of land lying vacant where a food plaza, a musical fountain, an amusement park, a hovercraft and an open theatre have been proposed in order to attract tourists. A large parking area has also been proposed at the site. Further, to put into action the proposed plan, Ali instructed Vijay Sonkar, chief engineer, to conduct a survey of the site and submit a report at the earliest. KDA secretary Shakuntala Gautam said that a parking area is being developed by the development authority at the Ganga Barrage. A boat club is also proposed to come up at the barrage. The KDA is gearing up to develop the proposed boat club in an area of 28,000 square metres, wherein a facility of water sports will be provided to the visitors and tourists. The KDA officials said that a road connecting barrage to the boat club will be constructed with an investment of Rs 1.36 crore. It would be relevant to mention here that hundreds of city denizens flock to Ganga Barrage in their leisure time everyday in the absence of any tourist spot in the city. At the barrage, the visitors enjoy the beauty of Ganga and its shores. The site also attracts the attention of the city folks as the place offers relief from the city's maddening crowd. Keeping all these aspects in view and realising that the spot could be developed as a hot tourist destination, the KDA plans to bring a change at the site.

Talking to TOI, public relations officer, KDA, Anant Singh said that the Kanpur Development Authority wishes to bring a change in the city as it has immense potential. He further said that the KDA vice-chairman has a plan for developing the Ganga Barrage as a tourist spot as the place has potential to attract visitors.

Several projects for Kanpur's revamp in the pipeline

KANPUR: Several important decisions regarding infrastructural development of the industrial city were taken in a meeting headed by UP chief secretary Jawed Usmani in Lucknow on Wednesday. Some of the proposals in the pipeline for giving Kanour a major facelift include construction of railway overbridges and flyovers, beautification of no-tempo zone between Gol Chauraha and Narohna crossing, installation of meters in autos/taxis, development of Phoolbagh and Gandhi hall, shifting of district jail outside the city and construction of a new two-floor district jail premises, beautification of city ghats, and a much modernised Kanpur zoo. Shalini Prasad, divisional commissioner, Kanpur Division, Jayshree Bhoj, vice chairman, Kanpur Development Authority, Sadakant, principal secretary (housing), CP Paliwal, principal secretary (Urban Development) took part in the high-level meeting where Jawed Usmani instructed the officials concerned to not shift Tat Mill bus station out of the city. Instead, he sought operation of state roadways buses from Fazalganj, Chunniganj and Vikas Nagar bus depots also in order to reduce the rush at Tat Mill bus depot. Usmani also instructed the officials to locate a land of about 100 acre for shifting the district jail. The new jail premises will be two-floored and have the capacity to house nearly 3000 prisoners. A residential complex of six floors for accommodating jail officials and other staff will also be created close to the jail premises, the chief secretary said. Usmani reportedly also asked the officials to ensure that meters are installed in the remaining 410 autos/taxis. So far, meters have already been installed in 2558 autos/taxis running in the city. In another important decision, Usmani asked city officials to conduct a survey for construction of a Rail overbridge/flyover on national highway number 91 from Gurudev palace to DIG PAC residence. The ROB will be multi-directional. The principal secretary also expressed interest in riverfront development. He said a riverfront development project will be formulated soon so that the four ghats of the industrial city may be beautified. He said a sum of Rs 406.58 lakhs will be granted for the same soon. He instructed the Public Works Department (PWD) to immediately carry out the maintenance work of the roads from Keso tri-section to Indira Nagar, Jajmau Nai Chungi to

STP and Deep Cinema and 250 meters beyond. The maintenance work would include widening of these roads for better traffic movement. Usmani instructed the officials to get the approach road of 3.5 kms from Ganga Barrage to Lucknow via Azad Marg completed within the ongoing month. He added that the 10.20 km long embankment should be constructed by the irrigation department and 6.70 kms of road beyond (in the Unnao district) should be constructed by Unnao Nagar Nigam. For smooth vehicular movement between Gol Chauraha and Narhona crossing, Usmani said that with a sum of Rs 5.62 crore which has already been sanctioned, the route between the two ends will be upgraded. Work in this direction will kickstart from April 25, he added. A new postmortem house is also in the offing. Usmani said that with a sum of Rs 10 lakh, a new autopsy house will come up, the design of which should be ready soon. He also asked the officials to identify a patch of land in Kanpur Dehat where a new airport could be built in the near future. Usmani said the government wants to get ROBs/flyovers constructed in the industrial city with an expenditure of Rs 600 crore. This would give city people much-needed relief from traffic jams, especially at the railway crossings. These ROBs/flyovers will come up between IG residence to Murray Company bridge, IG residence to Jaipuria crossing and IG residence to Ghantaghar. He also instructed the officials to get the approach road to old Ganga bridge, East Canal marg, West canal marg made. The road route from Ghantaghar to Jarib Chowki and Vijay Nagar via Fazalganj must be maintained and widened soon, he instructed. The chief secretary also highlighted the state government's keenness towards developing Kanpur zoo with a sum of Rs 8.3 crore. Shalini Prasad, divisional commissioner, Kanpur Division who was part of the meeting informed Usmani that with a sum of Rs 129 crore, Kanpur Nagar Nigam has been entrusted with the responsibility of widening and construction of roads in the city. She also apprised Usmani that the tourism department has proposed a project regarding developing historical Phoolbagh as a modern park. Also, Gandhi Bhawan and Phoolbagh buildings will be maintained and beautified. The library will also be modernised and upgraded. Developing Kanpur Haat is also on the cards. Prasad also highlighted before Jawed Usmani that Bithoor, which witnessed the revolt of 1857 and Ganga ghats will be developed as tourist places. The construction of Lohia Park on the side of Ganga Barrage is also in the offing, informed Prasad further.
