TWO MARKS QUESTIONS: 9. Derive an expression for the speed of an oscillating particle in terms of its displacement from mean position. OR A spring with a spring constant 1200 N m is mounted on a horizontal table as shown in the Fig. mass of 3 kg is attached to the free end of the spring. The mass is then pulled sideways to a distance of 2.0 cm and released. Determine (i) the frequency of oscillations, and (iii) the maximum speed of the mass.

The position of a particle is given by the equation 2 r = 3.0t i + 2.0 t j + 5.0 k Find the magnitude and direction of the velocity of the particle at t = 2 sec. Two tuning forks A and B produce 5 beats/sec. Tuning fork B is loaded and again beats are produced with A. Now the beat frequency is found to be 7. Find the frequency of B if the frequency of A is 256Hz. OR For the travelling harmonic wave y(x, t) = 2.0 Cos 2 (10t 0.0080 x + 0.35) Where x and y are in cm and t in s. Calculate the phase difference between oscillatory motion of two points separated by a distance of /2. The value of acceleration due to gravity is 980 cm/s2. What will be its value if the unit of length is km, and that of time is minute?

THREE MARKS QUESTIONS: 19. Define an adiabatic process. Mention two essential conditions for a process to be adiabatic. Write the equation of state for an adiabatic process. 20. Derive an expression for the excess pressure inside a liquid bubble. OR What is the density of water at a depth where pressure is 80.0 atm, given that its density at the surface is 1.03 10 kg m ? 21. A body of mass 0.5 kg travels in a straight line with velocity v =a x where a = 5 m1/2 s1. What is the work done by the net force during its displacement from x = 0 to x = 2 m? OR What are conservative and non-conservative forces? Give one example of each. Prove that gravitational force is a conservative force. A man stands on a rotating platform, with his arms stretched horizontally holding a 5 kg weight in each hand. The angular speed of the platform is 30 revolutions per minute. The man then brings his arms close to his body with the distance of each weight from the axis changing from 90cm to 20cm. The moment of inertia of the man together with the platform may be taken to be constant and equal 2 to 7.6 kg m . (a) What is his new angular speed? (Neglect friction.) (b) Is kinetic energy conserved in the process? If not, from where does the change come about? OR Find the moment of inertia of a ring about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the disc and passing through its center. Apply the theorems of parallel and perpendicular axis of moment of inertia to the result obtained in and find the moment of inertia of the disc about an axis parallel to the diameter of the disc and tangential to the disc. A fighter plane flying horizontally at an altitude of 1.5 km with speed 720 km/h passes directly overhead an anti-aircraft gun. At what angle from the vertical should the gun be fired for the shell with muzzle speed 600 m s-1 to hit the plane? At what minimum altitude should the pilot fly the plane -2 to avoid being hit? (Take g = 10 m s ). OR With the help of a neat and labeled diagram, derive an expression for the Time of flight (T), Range ( R) for an oblique projectile. A batsman deflects a ball by an angle of 45 without changing its initial speed which is equal to 54km/h. What is the impulse imparted to the ball? (Mass of the ball is 0.15 kg.) OR State and prove the law of conservation of linear momentum.

Mention the properties a system must possess to show oscillatory motion? Prove that the oscillations of a simple pendulum are SHM. Find the expression for time period of oscillation of the simple pendulum. Define escape velocity. Derive an expression for escape velocity of a planet? Does escape velocity depend on the height from which the body is thrown? Give reason: (i) Why do dogs curl themselves up in winters? (ii) Why regions closer to ocean have moderate temperatures throughout the year. OR Derive a relation between coefficient of linear expansion and coefficient of volumetric expansion.

FIVE MARKS QUESTION: 28. Define stationary waves. With the help of neat and labeled diagrams show formation of stationary waves in a pipe open at both ends for first three modes. Also prove that for stationary waves in a pipe open at both ends, the frequency of nth mode is equal to n times the frequency of the fundamental mode. (1, 1, 2) OR Derive a general formula for the apparent frequency received by an observer when there is relative motion between the source and listener. A train, standing at the outer signal of a railway station blows a whistle of frequency 400 Hz in still air. (i) What is the frequency of the whistle for a platform observer when the train 1 (a) approaches the platform with a speed of 10 m s , (b) recedes from the platform with a speed of 10 m s ?
