A 92-year-old ascetic, Yugal Saran Maharaj, who underwent a special 45-day 'kayakalpa' treatment in seclusion, now has black strands sprouting in his otherwise grey beard and also confesses to feeling youthful stirrings. Saran Maharaj underwent the treatment in the three-chambered trigarbha graham at Ottappalam in Palakkad district as part of an attempt to create a `miracle' of rejuvenation using kayakalpa rasayana which is extolled in ayurveda texts.
Besides achieving a haemoglobin count of 15.5, uncharacteristic among people of his age, the ascetic has also started experiencing 'amorous feelings' that he abandoned 60 years ago. Likewise, the swelling on his feet and hands vanished a few shaking teeth have now become firmer. An ayurveda practioner himself, Saran Maharaj came down from Mount Abu in Rajasthan to go through the rigorous kayakalpa process. I did this not to become younger but to prove a point ancient ayurveda can do wonders, he told Deccan Chronicle. I was associated with a similar treatment for social reformer Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1933. The trigarbha was built by ayurveda physician Dr Sethumadhavan as described in ancient texts spending Rs 32 lakh. In the chamber one undergoes the process of change like an embryo in the womb, he said. However, Saran Maharaj cautions that the treatment is not for the fickle-hearted: Imagine sitting inside a dark chamber with no water or food, he said. Think about having only medicines supplemented with a glass of milk.

subramaniamgopalaswamy 09/07/2011 - 08:16am Good news for senior citizens. Good news for govt. They can provide the above treatment to their employees and extend the retirement age and/or use their services after retirement also. After 10 or 20 years the population of senior citizens will be considerably increased probably to the extent of 25 to 30% of the total population. Are they not going to be burden to the exchequer, since their contribution will be much less for the growth of the nation? Though all of us are concerned about their welfare, their contribution is also important.

Dr Phanindra Vedula 30/05/2011 - 09:27pm Yes.... Ayurvedo Amritanam.... The quote of Acharya Charaka is not as simple as we think. The concept of Trigarbha Kuti (chamber) is of course, taken from the Loka Purusha Samya, which Ayurveda firmly believes. We have Susruta saying.... Tasyastu triteeye aavarte garbhashayya... Ayurveda can really create wonders, provided we respect the system, practitioners. The upcoming BAMS graduates should learn the correct way of diagnosis and treatment, according to ayurveda. We can even treat emergencies, if properly trained.

Ramachandran Nair T N 30/05/2011 - 07:58pm I have previously heard about this and once read an article about a person who had undergone this treatment years back. In that article Trigarbha was named Kudeeram in Malayalam and Kudeer in Sanskrit. I think that this treatment will give good results. The cost is not affordable for normal people.

Ramachandran Iyer 29/05/2011 - 05:49pm Now may I suggest if this works, shall we arrange for a detailed tests? Select 5 people from different age groups 45-50; 50-55; 55-60; 60-70. Take blood test before starting the course of treatment, samples of the skin from face, stomach , the physiology , geans, the sperm count in a man, brain mapping skull and chest x-rays etc., ie when man matures his psychology is different than when he is young. The attraction towards women and other problems he is facing. and all these are to be recorded. If all these shows a good turning point yes we can raise our heads and claim that we won the age! I am sure this yogi will give us an excellent cooperation so that the Ayurveda gains name and fame.

Dr.Vijay Carolin 28/05/2011 - 06:33pm Dear Mr.Ramachandran, whatever effect that the respected Saran Maharaj has recieved is valid enough to give a positive thought towards research in Ayurveda. Even if one has injected blood it will not help to bring back the colour of the eyebrow back! Why are we being pessimistic? Why can't we think that it could be true? Anyway the aged man has endorsed publicly what his intentions were and he has shown his results! Cheers to Ayurveda and congratulations to Saran Maharaj and his doctor Sethumadhavan! No medicine other than Ayurveda could show such results!

Ramachandran 27/05/2011 - 01:37pm What is the chemistry behind this? Suppose if this "young man" takes ill as a side effect, how will they treat him? 45 days only with milk and herbs is really unbelievable. If Hb count alone decides the old man from youth he can very well inject blood with high iron content. How about the strength of the bone and how the bone is strengthened? How are the gums behaving? Lots of questions to be answered.

RASIT AHMET 27/05/2011 - 12:57pm Kudos to Saran Maharaj, its really a miracle and his efforts to undergo such treatment should be appreciated at an age where people just go into oblivion. We Indians have always neglected our ancestorial medicines which are now scientifically proven by foreigners and Indian knew these medicines from ages. I am lost of words to appreciate this Maharaj.
