(2) Prepare the applicable fuel tank for access (TASK 281000840801). E. Procedure (1) Do the cleaning of the fuel tanks as follows: (a) With the air vacuum cleaner, remove all loose contamination at the bottom of the tank. NOTE: When you clean the wing tank, do the work from the outboard end to the inboard end of the tank.

(b) Clean all areas of the tank with solvent as follows: 1 2 3 4 5 (c) With the spray equipment, clean from the top of the tank structure to the bottom. If necessary, use a clean cloth or soft brush to loosen the contamination from the tank structure or component. Open the water drain valves to drain the solvent (TASK 281000680801). Clean the remaining contamination with a clean cloth moist with solvent. Let the surface dry by air.

Examine all water drains and make sure that they are not blocked with contamination.

Sampler, Fuel

Refer to the BD700 ILLUSTRATED TOOL AND EQUIPMENT MANUAL to make sure that you use the correct equipment configuration.

C.

Job SetUp (1) Obey the fuelsystem safety precautions (TASK 280000910801). (2) Make sure that the aircraft is correctly grounded (TASK 101100867801).

D.

Procedure Refer to Figure 201. (1) Drain water from the fuel tanks as follows: (a) For the wing and center (and forward if installed) fuel tanks, do the steps that follow: 1 2 Put the fuel sampler directly below the water drain valve (1) or (3) of the fuel tank that you drain. Push the fuel sampler up against the waterdrain valve screw (2) or (4) (to open the water drain valve (1) or (3)). NOTE: The water drain valve closes when you lower the fuel sampler. You can lock the drain valve in the open position. To do this, push up on the valve and turn one quarter of a turn clockwise. To unlock, push up and turn one quarter of a turn counterclockwise.

Lower the fuel sampler when a sufficient amount of fuel is in the fuel sampler.

(b) For the aft fuel tank, do the steps that follow: 1 2 3 Put the fuel sampler directly below the drain tube (6). Turn the drain valve screw (5) clockwise to open the water drain valve. When a sufficient amount of fuel is in the fuel sampler, turn the drain valve screw (5) counterclockwise. This will close the water drain valve. NOTE: If you drain residual fuel, make sure you close the valve immediately after the tank is empty. If you do not do this, fuel will spill through the drain valve when you refuel the aft tank.

WARNING:

IF YOU DO WORK IN A FUEL TANK, USE A FACE MASK (AND ITS RELATED EQUIPMENT) UNTIL THE EXPLOSIMETER SHOWS A FUEL FUME CONCENTRATION LOWER THAN THE SAFE LIMIT. FUMES FROM THE FUEL ARE VERY DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSE INJURY AND DEATH.

(2) Remove the remaining fuel as follows: (a) Use cotton cloths or a natural sponge to soak up the remaining fuel. (b) Put the fuel from the cloths or the sponge in the nonstatic fuel container. (c) Put the cloths or the sponge in the fuel container.

(d) Count each cloth or sponge to make sure that you do not let the cloths or sponges stay in the fuel tank. (e) Clean the cloths or the sponge in water and let them dry. (f) Discard the cloths or the sponge.

(g) Discard the fuel correctly. (3) Put all of the tools in a nonstatic container with rounded corners. Keep all of your tools in the container when they are not used. Procedure (1) Put an air compressor more than 100 feet (30 m) from the aircraft. (2) Connect the air compressor to the same ground as the aircraft. (3) Install the fueltank ventingkit in the access panel openings. NOTE: The fueltank ventingkit suction removes the fuel fumes from the fuel tank while clean air is pulled into the fuel tank through the other access panel opening. MAKE SURE THAT ALL EQUIPMENT IS CLEAR OF THE EXHAUST DUCT. AIRFLOW FROM THE EXHAUST DUCT CAN CAUSE STATIC ELECTRICITY. THIS CAN CAUSE AN EXPLOSION.

WARNING:

(4) Put the exhaust outlet hose outdoors in the open air. (5) Ground the end of the exhaust outlet hose. (6) Connect an air hose from the air compressor to the fueltank ventingkit. WARNING: IF THE INDICATOR NEEDLE ON THE EXPLOSIMETER INCREASES TO THE TOP OF THE SCALE, TURN THE INSTRUMENT SWITCH TO OFF. FUEL FUME MIXTURES THAT CAUSE THESE INDICATIONS ARE DANGEROUS. EXPLOSIONS CAN OCCUR IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER OF THE EXPLOSIMETER.

(7) After 30 minutes, put the sample line from the explosiometer far into the fuel tank. Use the manufacturers instructions to measure the fuel fume concentration. (8) Do not do maintenance in the fuel tank until you see the condition that follows: (a) The explosiometer shows that the fuel fume concentration is less than the lower explosive limit. (9) Continue to vent the fuel fumes while you do work inside the fuel tank. (10) Measure the fume concentration in and around the fuel tank every 30 minutes while you do work in the fuel tank. If the fuel fume concentration increases more than the lower explosive limit, all persons must get out of the fuel tank. E. Close Out (1) Remove all tools, equipment, and unwanted materials from the work area.
