Introduction
Paying It Forward (Exploring the sense of environmental and community engagement as future designer) is the environmental-community service project. This project is more focus on the organization like social service organizations, nonprofit providers and associations that engage both young people and adults as volunteers. Environmental-Community service is defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Its not a responsibility or an obligation: its a commitment. As architecture student, we serve the particular non-profit organization as a client and come out some environmental sustainable designs to improve their current living condition. Throughout the whole project, this helps us to build a persons character, improves our communication skill with each other, being able to work on a team and being able to take on leadership role. In the end of the project, we will have a clear and deeper understanding of the words Sustainable & Environmental-Community.

Project Statement
Good Samaritan Home (GSH) is an orphanage house with 36 orphans. With the number of children living in a double-storey house, therefore the moving spaces in the house are limited. At the same time, The Home is a small recycling center where collecting recyclable material and cabinets or cloth from kind-hearted donors which is still good in condition to be used. But with too much of donated stuffs received such as clothes, shoes, school bag and toys are placed unorganized all around the place which cause narrow circulation inside the house. Due to this, the air ventilation inside the house turns bad. Living in a narrow space with all the stuffs around which is not comfortable and also inconvenient is classified as the main community issue in GSH. However, the GSHs owner had been fully renovated and extends the whole building until the fences were placed within the edge of wall. Two containers are stacked over at the courtyard to create another space of library and store-room respectively. When we step in the house, we saw a lot of old stuffs were placed in front of the entrance of the house included old mattress, newspaper, cabinet etc. After we have some conversation and interview with Mr. Robert Ong, we understand that the GSH is a recycle center as to collect all the old stuffs from the nearby housing area and filter the extra or un-needed stuffs placed it into boxes and postal for others orphanage home which located at Sabah and Sarawak. Moreover, by selling recyclable material would gain an extra income for education and foods. This house occupied 36 orphans and non-stop increasing every year. We decided to select Good Samaritan Home (GSH) as our project because limited moving space which is a main problem hope to be solved by the owner, workers and children, and our task is to create a better living environment for them.

Objectives
GSH hopes that we can design some multi-functional structure to keep all the goods in order, to save the space and to maximize the interior space that can be used by the children. The duration of the project is estimated take 3 4 weeks. For sure, when the whole project is completed, all of the 36 orphans and all the staffs there will get the benefit as all the stuffs are arranged orderly and extra spaces created will make them feel more comfortable and convenient. The air ventilation in the house will also become better. The estimated cost is around RM 1400. Members and some of their parents/friends will collect donation to sponsor this project. As a sustainable strategy, we going to design a numbers multi-function module that allows the orphans to keep their school bags/belongings and another design use it as a multifunction study table. We will also have some plants on the module to refresh the air in the entrance of the house and this might improve the air ventilation of the house. The materials of the module will take from recycle center, factory erected material due to quality control and Good Samaritan Home itself.

Exploration and Understanding of Site

It is a brief understanding of Good Samaritan Home (GSH) in term of space quality and its function. There are total of 36 children and 10 adults staying in this 37 m x 64.2 m double-storey home. The red arrow shows the user movement to experience the entire space in this home.

Viewable The condition of GSH is easily to be seen through around explore from the entrance which full with recyclable material such as plastic bottles, books, recyclable cardboard and plastic toys. In kitchen at right hand side of entrance, the cabinet of storing dry food is mixed up with recyclable plastic as limited place to keep and dustbin at the side of cabinet as saying to convenient the children and maids to throw wastage. Move on to the interior dining hall, an expose cabinet with unorganized bags get spotted and the whiteboard which hang out of standing height for a person to write. Going up to first floor, the condition of cloth-shelf are terrified with numerous unopened packs of cloth from donor on the floor. It has blocked the 6.6x1.6 m2, small pathway at first floor. At the side of cloth-shelf, few foldable plastic tables spotted which is use for children tuition class after school. The air ventilation at first floor is weak and warm as the warm air ventilate flow in from balcony circulate inside the study hall but no windows for the air to circulate out. Same problems face at the ground floor as the space for air to flow through has blocked with container, store room and advertisement cloth to prevent hot sun penetrate in.

Non-viewable An interview of explanation and questioning about the problems his faced is given by Mr. Robert Ong. The head-ache yet adorable problem(s) is he has to handle this 36 different character of his children whom are naughty and playful which create different laughter all the times. They would climb up to 3rd row of shelf upon their height to grab their cloth and jump down and says Spiderman said Mr. Robert in that interview. Moreover, boy children are naughtier in the way of swing under the table, sleeping on the able or playing hide and side around first floor which has cause the table getting shaky day by day. Therefore, Mr. Robert has to repair the table or spending another amount of money to replace the broken stuff.

d. Problems on Site

Ground Floor: 1) Bag-shelf at Dining hall has limited the numbers of bags out of 26 children to put. As a concerned, their bags are large to carry those textbooks and exercise books. Therefore, the bag-shelf is not enough for them. 2) The whiteboard hang on the wall are place to note down ingredients and goods need to buy or available stocks. It has a routine for different kid to write as to practice their mandarin writing. Therefore, the height of the hang whiteboard is too high for kids to reach. First Floor: 1) There is morning and afternoon session tuition class for children after back from school. Each session would have 7 students included a tutor surround 3 foldable plastic table while during weekends; all students will be attend the class. The foldable plastic table and 2 additional tables added are still to squeeze for children to use as student place. 2) Numbers of book(s) received from kind-hearted donor have brought an inconvenient to home as the existing book-shelves are not enough space to place the book unconsciously. 3) Children are an age of nave and mind full with fun. They would experience and explore fun-method themselves in different way including swing under the table by both hand holding on table top with squat up their legs while tutors and guidance not noticed. Their fun-explore has causing the legs and stability of table getting shaky.

1) Multi-Functional Extendable Table

Specially design for kids with book shelves as table support for them to place their books instead of placing it on the floor. The highlight of this table is the extendable table which can be use and keep depends on the amount of user used. (max. 16 children)

Specially design for children to place their bags after school and stuff in the cabinet. The highlight of this cabinet is making an additional cabinet on top of the original cabinet and creates a sliding whiteboard in front of the cabinet without moving away the existing furniture yet is able to place stuff behind of the whiteboard. Problems and Solution:

Multi-Function Extendable Table
1) Problem: Losing 2 piece of 12mm and 18mm plywood (legs of table) during transportation causing delay of works on the first assembling day on 4 th June 2013. Solution: Gary who own a car help Oscars group searching back the losing piece from Nicholass house and workshop at Desa Park City. Fortunately, we manage to find the losing piece back at the workshop.

Problem: Assembling work is delayed because of out of brackets yet the time is already too late to buy it since the hardware shops are closed at 6.00pm. Solution: The assembling works are continued on the next day after brackets needed are brought. Without wasting time, progress of screw in the nails to the side (which no brackets
needed) continued and polish the table top surface and the sharp edge of table.

Problem: During assembling the table, we found that the height of table, 930mm is too high for children to use. Solution: By using critical thinking immediately, taking out the part which have to be recut and recalculating and remarks are done on the spot, we brought back the plywood to workshop at Taylors University for wood cutting and finally it is corrected.

4)

Problem: Lack of extended table stand(s). Solution: Change the design from four stands to two stands and fixed the stands on the right place which able to support the table by calculating the equilibrium point of the table at the same time reduce the rate of any accident cause in future by adding 3 L-shaped brackets at each side of stand and screw a nail from top of table to the center of each stand.

Problem: Numbers of extra woods collected after wood-recut to calculated dimension. Solution: Therefore, in order to reduce the amount of waste woods which had occurred and become main issues nowadays, an idea of reused the remaining wood with designing a kid chair and a flower pot holder is made as an additional design in this project.

Multi-Functional cabinet
1) Problem: Wrong dimension for new cabinet site as Scarlett included the dimension of the old cabinet as well. Solution: To solve it, we cut the wood into half and for those unused wood can be used as the partition inside the cabinet. Some of the unused wood is for backup plan when some wood are missing or broken.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we are deeply understood about Sustainability & Environmentalcommunity. Sustainability is the capability to endure and last longer. With a sustainable design 20 | P a g e

like Multi-functional Extendable Table and Multi-functional Cabinet can be used for few years without any serious damage on them. In addition, why is environmental-community such an important quality and trait for a person to possess? Environmental community service is not only about performed the service to the benefits of public but it is a way to teach the lesson by action after then. The reason why we choosing Good Samaritan Home (GSH) is there are 36 children with 2 maids and 3 principles in a double-storey house which made the every existing space is smaller. The environment is indeed to our helps where the space are limited and has to be consider wisely before any donated cabinets or furniture to be added as childrens safety is their first concern. Before the projects action taken, we understand that the limited space in this home needs our help to maximize we reminds ourselves safety of children are far more important not even during the process of design making but also after the product is done. Therefore, we choosing 18 mm and 12 mm plywood which have stronger stability and shellac is apply to increase the strength and longevity yet sustainable in the sense of less maintenance needed afterward. The duration of the project was estimated about 3 to 4 weeks but we have taken longer time to finish it. Although more money is spent, more time is need but more lesson experience throughout this project.

Feedback
Mr. Robert Ong (The owner): I think the design is good, it definitely benefits the children. The movable board,, it actually saves space because if not the board i have to put it on the wall so that was quite good, consider quite good. The measurement has to be considered because you designed the drawer very nice, i mean very good but when you make it, maybe because you are not carpenters but when you make it, maybe because you are not carpenters because your measurement are off a bit after making it, the thing looks nice, but the space became i mean, your management is okay but after you make it the thing looks very big, so it takes up more space for the top table. Ong Wei Hoow: Throughout this project, I have understood what sustainability means. With a sustainable design, the design only can be used fully in a long term. In the way to construct the multifunctional furniture, we faced some problems. At last, with all members cooperation and solution, we solved all the problems and got them done on time. As the leader of the group, I m proud and appreciated what all my beloved members contributed in this project. This project was really meaningful and awesome! Goh Kee Woon: In this project, I've experienced that working in a group of 10 or more requires a lot of planning and cooperation from the others. We've encountered problems during the process and we've came together to give support from different position that we're in charge of. Finally, I would like to give thanks for the pleasure to serve this non-profit organization not only to build furniture but the effort made to give help and to see them making full use of our product. Poh Wei Keat: I have learned lots of practical skills and met lots of new people during the days in Good Samaritan Home. I have learned the ways to build furniture from a raw material and also the importance of teamwork to make the project successful done on time. I am really thankful to have the chance to carry out this assignment which involves charitable deed. I hope there is more of this kind of assignment in the future. Lee Yiang Siang: This project has given me the opportunity to design furniture for the community in need which also giving me a basic idea of designing a furniture. I have learned that there are a lot of things that need to be aware of while designing good furniture to the specific client. Besides, it is fun during the process as we get to do things together with members and playing with the orphans there. Yet, the most important thing is the feeling of happiness after completing the work while watching how exciting the children are using the furniture that we created. And I think that is the most precious thing that I get throughout this project--the happiness and satisfaction by helping people. Daniel Chew Feng Yi: Overall, I am very happy to have a chance to take this ESD project. I am proud of my group can finish this project before 1 week of the submission date. I had learnt that need to have more be careful to choose the best condition/quality of materials, because without a good quality materials, nice and good design is nothing.

Celine Tan Jean Inn: Each time I went to The Home, the warmest welcome from kids making me feel more energetic to start my work. James Chng, a ten years old kid shows his helpfulness and dare to question attitude in everything weve done. The products that we have done are just symbol or remarks that hope the children learned from the way that we helping them and helping others in future. This project is not only about understanding sustainable, environment and community but the experience I got and the lesson afterward. Gan Sze Hui (Scarlett): For me, it is a great experience to help others while I still learn some technical skills throughout this project. After finished this project what I realized is this moral would actually passing to the orphans at Good Samaritan Home and definitely they would helping others orphans in future thus become a cycle of moral. Brandon Ang Ee Shen: For me, I am very glad and thankful because have the chance to do the ESD project with my group mate. I had learnt how hard it is to build the structure beside just sit down and design. After the project, I really do appreciate what i have in life now. Nicholas Tiong Ing Jun: I think this project give me a great opportunity to work in a group with my classmates. I am very satisfying with the cooperation and the teamwork while doing this project. What I learnt in this project is have a deep consideration about the material for certain object and the combination of each detail. Gary Chong Wee Ming: I generally have not much comments and feedback towards the progress and the teamwork of this project. But if i have to comment, i would say the duration used on work is slightly off timing, It is slower than plan and time management is a little poor. Nevertheless, i feel satisfied of the outcome and i will be expecting further similar projects to come. Ling Teck Ong: In this project, I have learnt how to construct a multipurpose table with sustainable material. Im glad that we finish it together as a team. I also realized that every single of us have a responsibility to protect our environment. Who says saving the world is only for superheroes?
