Jonathan Murphys big night sends Kernels past Lake County, 9-7
Eastlake, OH Jonathan Murphy went 3-5 with a double, HR and 3 RBI and Jorge Polanco was 2-3 with 2
RBI as the Cedar Rapids Kernels beat the Lake County Captains, 9-7, in front of 2,708 fans at Classic Park
in Eastlake, OH on Thursday.
Murphy started the game with a lead-off double that scattered the Kernels bullpen and then added a solo
HR in third inning and a two run single in the fourth. The Kernels pounded out 12 hits in the game, ten of
them singles.
After Lake County took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, the Kernels scored fve runs in the fourth inning
and added key insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning to preserve the win for Kernels starter Josue
Montanez (4-2). Montanez went six innings allowing fve runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked three
and struck out six for the win.
Hudson Boyd worked two innings out of the Kernels bullpen allowing two runs on three hits. Madison Boer
earned his frst save as a Kernel, allowing two hits and a walk, but striking out Anthony Santander to end
the game with the bases loaded.
Adam Brett Walker went 2-5 with an RBI, his 80th on the season and the second Kernels to reach 80 RBI
this year (Dalton Hicks, 82).
Lake County starter Luis Dejesus (3-10) took the loss. The Captains had four home runs in the game and
were led offensively by Joe Sever, who went 3-4 with a double, HR and 4 RBI.
The Kernels will look for the series sweep on Friday night at Classic Field in Eastlake, OH as LHP Brett Lee
(6-4, 3.54) starts for the Kernels against RHP Jake Sisco (4-6, 3.75) for Lake County. First pitch is set for
6:00 pm, CDT.
The current road trip continues through July 22nd and the Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans
Memorial Stadium to open a six-game home stand against Peoria and Clinton starting Wednesday, July 24th.
