How to protect yourself and others:


Whenever possible, lockout equipment before service and maintena nce. Conduct a hazard assessm ent and follow approved safe work procedures. Wear appropriate protectiv e clothing and equipment (see chart). Use insulated gloves, tools, blankets and barriers. Keep unqualified personne l outside of the flash protection boundar y. Keep equipment clean and free from dirt and corrosion. Avoid operating equipment at higher than the rated voltage. Be careful to avoid generating sparks.

130.3 (C) Equipment Labeling
Equipment shall be field marked with a label containing the available incident energy or required level of PPE."

NFPA 70 National Electric Code, 2005


110.16 Flash Protection
Switchboards, panelboards, industrial control panels, meter socket enclosures, and motor control centers that are in other than dwelling occupancies and are likely to require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while energized shall be field marked to warn qualified persons of potential electric arc flash hazards. The marking shall be located so as to be clearly visible to qualified persons before examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance of the equipment.
