Overview
R/3 offers a high degree of system flexibility in order to meet customer requirements and the system supports a number of different hardware platforms and databases. The wide range of variables that the System is capable of managing mean that R/3 installation scenarios can vary greatly. This is why careful planning by the customer and installer is prerequisite for performing the installation of an R/3 System. Pre-installation planning includes giving serious consideration to system sizing as well as to layouts such as data storage, system configuration, and network configuration. Security considerations (such as data security, availability, and access control) must also be planned. The R/3 System should be installed with the results of these decisions and plans. This section gives an overview of the installation steps and time estimates for a typical installation run. The information in this chapter can be used to coordinate the installation procedure.
The actual time required for your installation may differ for several reasons (such as your hardware configuration, the experience of your installer, and so forth).
Pre Installation
Prior to installation, the hardware and software requirements must be checked using the R/3 Installation Checklist. It might be necessary to order additional disks, download patches, or install additional software components.

There is one Application Server Instancein the SAP R/3 System which runs special SAP processes that are unique in the system. This Application Server Instanceis called the Central Instance. On this Central Instance host, the SAP R/3 software and other important files are stored. There is also exactly one Database Server (Database Instance) containing the R/3 database. A Central Instance running on the same host with the database is often referred to as a Central System. Besides these two essential instances, there may be several additional Application Server Instanceson other hosts. These Instances are called Dialog Instances. The SAP R/3 Frontend Software (SAP GUI) may be installed on the same and/or different hosts. The SAP R/3 Installation always starts with the installation of the Central Instance. After the installation of the Central Instance, the Database Instance needs to be installed. After finishing the installation of the Central Instance and the Database Instance, additional Dialog Instances may be installed.
