They may be taken individually, or as required courses in UCLA Extensions and the UCLA School of Public Healths new certificate program in Health Care Management and Leadership. Jointly developed and overseen by both organizations, the program presents the latest information on industry trends in this complex, dynamic field that is expected to grow at twice the rate of other professional areas in the next decade. Quality Improvement, Performance Management, and Information Technology in Health Care Organizations
Health care organizations are under increasing scrutiny as a result of recent reports revealing widespread medical errors, increased clinical and staff turnover due to workplace dissatisfaction, and poor financial performance. Responding to these reports, health care organizations are implementing methods to improve quality along several dimensions, including patient care and safety, effectiveness of health care operations, staff and customer satisfaction, and financial improvement. To effect changesand performance improvement, health organizations need to implement complex information and performance management systems. This course introduces students to the variety of tools and programs available to the health care manager and professional responsible for providing the best care in the most effectively run organization. Topics include the manager's role in quality management; fundamentals of quality management; consumerism and customer service; understanding health care improvement in complex systems, information systems, and technology; use of data; quality improvement tools and methods; issues in implementing quality management programs; and the role of cross-functional teams, regulatory accreditation, and environmental expectations. Strategy and Marketing for Health Organizations (Hybrid)

This course provides students with a broad yet comprehensive overview of health care services and products as well as strategy and marketing concepts, issues, and tools. Instruction covers selected topics related to strategic planning and marketing. Strategic planning topics include mission and vision assessment, competitive and organizational analysis, SWOT analysis, scenario development, and the strategic planning process. Marketing concepts include market analysis and positioning; marketing segmentation and research; and price and product promotion from the hospital/health system, pharmaceutical, physician/ provider, and health plan perspective. Spring Elective: Health Information Systems and Technology (Hybrid)

Developing integrated health information systems is a major priority of health care reform. The Obama administration has allocated $36 billion for developing health information technology (HIT) over the next 6 years. Learn how HIT is used by health care delivery organizations, external research organizations, regulatory organizations, providers, and patients/ consumers. This course covers HIT implementation and management; ethical considerations and security; emerging and transformative technologies; and the technology fundamentals of electronic medical records (EMR), electronic health records (EHR), personal health records (PHR), and health information exchanges (HIE). The course also provides a planning framework that covers design, implementation, and support of clinical systems; financial/administrative systems; network and connectivity technologies; data management; and interoperability of systems. Health care legislation and stimulus support, including HIPAA, the HITECH Act, interoperability, and Regional Healthcare Information Organizations (RHIOs), are also addressed. Refunds
A service charge of $30 is withheld from all refunds (full refund if course is canceled, discontinued, or rescheduled). Refund request must be postmarked or phoned in by the last business day before the first class meeting for courses with one to five meetings, before the second meeting for courses with six to eight meetings, and before the third class meeting for courses with nine or more meetings.

Parking
