MEHRAN UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY, JAMSHORO. FIRST TERM SECOND YEAR (3RD TERM) B.E.

(TEXTILE) REGULAR EXAMINATION 2005 OF 04-BATCH UNDER EXTERNAL SYSTEM. TEXTILE MECHANICSI Time Allowed: 03 Hours.

Date: 12-05-2005. Max:Marks-80. NOTE: ATTEMPT ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. ALL QUESTIONS CARRY EQUAL MARKS. Q. No. 1. a) Explain the mechanics of Linear, Circular and Vibratory motions with the help of sketches. (10) b) A Ring spinning Frame Traveller is rotating at 16000 RPM on an Anti-wedge Ring with a diameter of 42m.m. Calculate its surface speed in m/s. (06) 2. a) How are vectors compounded (added) and resolved? (08)

b) A horizontal fabric passing over a guide roller changes direction by /3 rad as illustrated in Fig. 1. If tensions in the two ends are 20 N and 15 N, calculate the magnitude and direction of the force on the roller. (08)
15 N /3 rad

20 N

Figure 1 a) Derive following equations of uniform motion:i) S = vt (Uniform Velocity) ii) v = u + ft (Uniform Acceleration) iii) S = ut + at2 (The Distance Acceleration Ratio) iv) v2 - u2 = 2fS (The Velocity Distance Relation) b) Fibres are given a draft of 8 between two pairs of rollers, dia. of each roller is 3cm. A short fibre moves between the two with uniform acceleration and takes exactly 1 second to move from the first nip to the second. (08) 3. a) Discuss the following interrelationships and drive their equations: i) Mass and Force (F = mf) ii) Force, Time and Momentum (rate of change of momentum = F) iii) Work and Force (work done = force x distance moved) iv) Work and Energy (K.E. = mv2 and P.E. = mgh) v) Work, Power and Energy (10) (08)

b) Calculate the work done in lifting a bale of fibres of mass 120 kg from the ground to a delivery bay 3 m above the ground level. If the bale accidentally slips from the bay, what power is expended in its lift? (06) 4. a) What do you know about linear friction and coil friction? How is the force of friction calculated in both uses. (08) b) A bale weighing 120KG is raised from a 4m long ramp by means of a hydraulic system. The bale slips when it reaches 1.2m above the lower end. Calculate coefficient of friction for the contact between the bale and the ramp when slipping starts. (08)

Contd on P/-2 (-2-) 5. Explain, How does a lubricant act to make free (frictionless) movement of contacting metal surfaces? What do you know about the molecular structure of lubricants? Discuss the criteria of selecting a lubricant. (16) a) Explain the principle of the hydraulic press with the help of an illustration. (08)

6.

b) In a test of absorbency, a towel is hung vertically with its lower edge dipping into a dish of water, and the level of the water is observed to rise 8 cm above the surface because of capillary action within the towel. If the surface tension of the water is 0.075 N/m, calculate the mean pore diameter within the towel structure. (Assume the density of water to be 1000 kg/m3). (08) 7. Share your knowledge on any four of the following. i) ii) iii) iv) v) vi) Gravitational Acceleration Electrostatic Force Laminar Flow Visco-Elastic Behaviour State of Matter Fluid Machinery (04) (04) (04) (04) (04) (04)
