CALIFORNIA TITLE 24: THE ENERGY CODE & CALGREEN

Linwood Engineering Associates, P.C. August 2012

IMPACT OF CALIFORNIA ENERGY CODE

Established 1978 Reduces building energy use Lighting, Space Conditioning, Water Heating Stringent 37.5 Million people = Huge Impact

960,000,000,000KWh = 550 Oil Tankers = JPN Electric Output

Annual Energy Consumption per Capita

California vs. United States 2010 California Statistics Category Population Energy Consumption Energy Consumption Per Cap Energy Intensity: GDP/Energy Total 37.5 Million 2,400TWh 6,700KWh $2.90/kWh Rank 1/50 2/50 50/50 2/50

ENERGY CODE: METHODS OF COMPLIANCE

Prescriptive Approach
Building must comply with all applicable requirements Commonly used when only one system is in scope (i.e. lighting) Case Study: Pain Du Monde
Lighting
Standard Proposed 1.37W/DF 1.38 W/SF Standard Proposed

Performance Approach
Allows trade-offs between systems. Building uses no more energy that a standard building

ENERGY CODE: LIGHTING

CONTROLS: MANDATORY MEASURES Multi-level control. For when you just dont need that much light. Daylight control. For when the sun already provides enough light. Automatic shutoff. For when you forget to turn off the light. COMPLIANCE: WATTAGE DENSITY Whole Building. Watts/sf. Area Category. Watts/sf, for each area. Tailored Method. Watts/sf, plus display credits. Use EnergyPro software.

EXAMPLE: Crystal Cove 7916 Difficult calculation: Retail space with lack of display credits. Lighting: Standard 1.410 W/SF Proposed 1.324 W/SF Passed: 3.6%

ENERGY CODE: TRACK LIGHTING

AS IT LOOKS ON PAPER. 150W.

AS THE ENERGY CODE SEES IT. 500W.

ENERGY CODE: BUILDING ENVELOPE

The Energy Code divides California into 16 different Climate Zones. Requirements include: Roofs Walls Floors Windows (U-factor and RSHG) Doors Skylights
Solar Heat Gain vs Relative Solar Heat Gain:

ENERGY CODE: BUILDING ENVELOPE

Useful Information Prescriptive Requirements: Area of west facing windows shall not exceed 40% of the west facing wall. Skylights shall have an area no greater than 5% of the gross roof area. Performance Approach: Standard Building maxes out at 40% window area

EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio): The ratio of net cooling capacity (in Btu/hr) to total rate of electrical energy input (in watts) SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio): The total cooling output of an air conditioner in BTU during its normal usage period for cooling divided by the total electrical energy input in watt-hours during the same period. COP: The rate of heat output to the rate to total energy input Other Prescriptive Requirements: R-8 insulation required on ductwork located in unconditioned space. Economizers are required for systems supplying over 2,500 cfm.
