Evesham Townships crime
rate has dropped 21.7 percent,
with 83 fewer crimes than last
year, according to the states Uni-
form Crime Reporting rate.
According to the report, simple
assaults are down 100 percent,
with no incidents this year com-
pared to 10 last year. In addition,
theft is down from 254 last year to
198 recorded incidents this year.
Our agency attributes the suc-
cess to two new initiatives, the
Data Driven Approach to Crime
and Traffic Safety Zone and the
Intelligence Led Policing. We put
them in areas of high amounts of
crime, Sgt. Joseph Friel said.
According to the departments
website, DDACTS is a law enforce-
ment operational model support-
ed by a partnership among the De-
partment of Transportations Na-
tional Highway Traffic Safety Ad-
ministration and two agencies of
the Department of Justice: the
Bureau of Justice Assistance and
the National Institute of Justice.

The Lenape Regional High
School District Board of Educa-
tion approved a three-year em-
ployment contract at last weeks
meeting with the Lenape District
Support Staff Association, which
represents district bus drivers
and custodial staff, according to a
LRHSD release.
The LDSSA ratified the con-
tract on July 10, following negotia-
tions with the LRHSD BOE.
According to the release, the
three-year contract includes an
average salary increase of 2.3 per-
cent and was updated to be in
compliance with current statutes
governing public employee contri-
butions to health insurance.
"This contract is good for the
district and our employees," said
LRHSD board member John Heit-
mann Jr., who chairs the negotia-
tions committee. "We reached
agreement in a timely manner,
which helped keep morale high
for everyone involved. The board
and LDSSA share a commitment
to maintaining the quality of our
schools and the safety and securi-
ty of our students."
"We hammered out an agree-
ment in a remarkably short time,
and our members had no com-
plaints when we ratified the con-
tract," LDSSA President Victoria
DeSantis said. "We're members of
the community and take pride in
our jobs. We also recognize the
economic needs of the district,
and we were willing to work with-
in their budget to reach an agree-
ment."

DDACTS integrates location-
based crime and traffic data to es-
tablish effective and efficient
methods for deploying law en-
forcement and other resources.
Through using geo-mapping to
identify areas that have high inci-
dents of crime and crashes,
DDACTS uses traffic enforcement
strategies that play a dual role in
fighting crime and reducing
crashes and traffic violations. The
goal of DDACTS is to reduce
crime, crashes and traffic viola-
tions in Evesham Township.
We use it when there are
spikes in drug activity or a burgla-
ry spree. We place undercover of-
ficers in that area, and they work
really great together, Friel said.
We see it as putting out fires that
pop up all over town.
The department regularly posts
statistics as a result of the
DDACTS initiative. According to
Friel, Intelligence Led Policing is
utilized to direct patrol efforts at
reducing disorder and crime.
If a rash of burglaries pops up
all over town, ILP comes up with
stats, prepares a report and works
together to address that, whether
its unmarked police cars or un-
dercover cops well use to reduce
the crime, Friel said.
Additionally, the department
utilizes Facebook and Twitter for
residents to report crime.
We definitely believe it has a
substantial influence on bringing
crime down, Friel said. It allows
people to report crime informa-
tion to us anonymously. It has
been a deterrent, according to a
confidential informant. They tell
us they dont want to deal with
Evesham because they dont want
to end up on the social media
pages.
The countys initiatives play a
role in the decline as well.
According to Joel Bewley,
spokesman for the Burlington
County Prosecutors Office, the
county invested $4.8 million in
New World Systems a software,
hardware, training and support
company for local government
and public safety agencies using
a federal grant in 1996.

have the option of using the sys-
tem, and a majority of them do, he
said. When residents dial 911, the
system locates where the call is
coming from. The information
from the call is entered into the
system by the dispatcher and the
proper authorities are sent to the
scene. The program allows direct
communication with an officer
and mobile data terminal located
in squad cars, and departments
can look back and analyze inci-
dents entered in the system, Bew-
ley said.
We view it as a very effective
program, he said.
Recently, the department re-
leased statistics on what crime in
Evesham looks like the first six
months of the year.
According to the report, the
percentage changes are from pro-
jected totals of 2013, compared to
2012. Burglary is down 78 per-
cent; robbery is down 33 percent;
there have been no reports of
arson and assaults are down 40
percent. Of the crimes in the re-
port, DUIs were the only one to in-
crease. Theyre up 16 percent from
last year. Weapons offenses, drug
offenses and motor vehicle acci-
dents are down 60 percent, 21 per-
cent and 1.5 percent, respectively.
The numbers can be seen on
the departments Facebook page.
We want residents to know
that crime is down in Evesham.

trict, reviewing binders on record,
according to Chris Heilig, the dis-
tricts assessment, accountability
and planning coordinator.
The audit did not uncover any
fiscal problems, and the district
will not have to return any funds
provided through grants. Howev-
er, 16 procedural findings were re-
ported, according to Heilig.
A couple examples include not
properly documenting how we did
business with vendors, Heilig
said. We need to issue purchase
orders before services, just as an
example of what they found.
The districts next step is to ap-
peal or create a corrective action
plan.
The corrective action plan is
an easy solution for us, Heilig
said. Since there were no mone-
tary findings, we dont need to ap-
peal.
According to superintendent
Carol Birnbohm, some of the pro-
cedures were already corrected at
the end-of-the-year evaluations in
the spring. Board members will
review the report to discuss addi-
tional corrective action.
The board will vote and certify
there was a discussion at the next
meeting.
The next meeting will be held
Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the adminis-
trative building, located at 93 Wil-
low Grove Road in Shamong.

he Internet is quite a powerful
tool, but, sometimes its power
can be used for bad instead of
good. Information as harmless as
facts, someones opinion or pictures of
people having fun can turn harmful in
a second.
Inappropriate comments on a photo;
attacking someones character, race,
religion or sexuality; cyber-bullying;
or straight mis-reporting facts all take
advantage of the Internets power to
do bad.
Social media sites such as Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram make it easier
to connect people all over the world,
and even easier to do so in a negative
fashion.
But, luckily, there is some good
going on in the digital world.
The state recently released its Uni-
form Crime Reporting rates, and local
police departments have attributed
significant drops in crime to the their
utilization of social media.
In Evesham Township, for example,
crime dropped 21.7 percent. In
Moorestown, crime dropped 36.9 per-
cent. Officials from both departments
say their presence on Facebook and
Twitter has helped tremendously.
Both of those departments use the
social media sites, as well as informa-
tion sharing service Nixle, to not only
notify residents of crimes, alerts and
issues, but also as communication
tools for residents to submit their own
issues and concerns directly to the de-
partment.
Theyve found that its much easier,
and more efficient, for residents to
submit information on the computer
than it is to call in or stop by their of-
fices.
Its great to see that police depart-
ments at a local level are utilizing the
latest technology to make their jobs
easier and more efficient, and provid-
ing more avenues for residents to feel
safe and communicate with their local
police force.
Evesham and Moorestown arent
the only towns with police depart-
ments doing this; they are just exam-
ples.
To those departments that are doing
the same, bravo; keep it up. To those
that arent, its time to step up and go
out on a limb. Its worth it.

Resident concerned about
recent rise in drug arrests
I am writing this letter to express con-
cern for what seems to be the recent rise in
drug arrests in Marlton.
As a longtime resident of Marlton, I was
shocked to see the numerous press releas-
es from the police regarding narcotics ar-
rests.
It seems as though what used to be a
quiet, family town has turned into more of
a playground for reckless youth.
Within the last two weeks, there have
been nine posts on the police Facebook/
Twitter accounts regarding drugs and or
burglaries.
While I acknowledge that the police
semi-annual report suggests that drug and
robbery arrests are down 20 percent and 7
percent, respectively, I still feel the urge to
speak out.
Twitter and Facebook do make it easier
for the police to convey information to the
public, and I am glad that they have imple-
mented these social networking sites so
that Marlton residents can feel like they
are aware and informed.
This letter is intended to simply raise
awareness among the residents of Marl-
ton.
Hopefully, if people are aware of their
surroundings and their neighbors, we will
begin to eradicate these disruptive individ-
uals from our town.
Drugs are everywhere; however it is my
hope that we can limit the prevalence here
so that future generations can enjoy the
town as much as my generation did.

The following are on file with
the Evesham Police Department:
On July 11 at 2:46 p.m., Eve-
sham Police detectives conduct-
ing surveillance observed a hand-
to-hand drug sale in the parking
lot of the 7-11 convenience store,
787 E. Route 70 Marlton.
During this investigation, in-
vestigators searched two vehicles,
which resulted in the seizure of
cocaine, heroin, prescription pills
and cash.
Three adult males were arrest-
ed at the scene and charged with
numerous drug offenses.
Charged were a male, age 39 of
Marlton, with third-degree distri-
bution of heroin, third-degree
distribution of crack cocaine,
third-degree possession of hero-
in, third-degree possession of
crack cocaine and third-degree
possession of prescription pills.
He was released on his own recog-
nizance.
The second male age 53, of
Beach Haven, was charged with
third-degree possession of heroin
and third-degree possession of
crack cocaine. He was released on
his own recognizance.
The third male, age 39 of Marl-
ton, was charged with third-de-
gree possession of heroin, third-
degree possession of crack co-
caine, third-degree possession of
prescription pills and a disorder-
ly persons offense for possession
of paraphernalia. He was re-
leased on his own recognizance.
On July 12, during the evening
hours, Evesham police officers as-
signed to a proactive undercover
surveillance detail observed a
hand-to-hand drug sale in the
unit block of Euston Road.
After the drug dealer was ar-
rested, officers and investigators
secured his residence and applied
for a search warrant.
A Burlington County Superior
Court Judge approved the war-
rant and the search warrant exe-
cution yielded additional drug
paraphernalia.
The suspect, age 22 of Marlton,
was charged with third-degree
distribution of a controlled dan-
gerous substance, third-degree
possession of prescription pills
and a disorderly persons offense
for possession of paraphernalia.
He was released after posting
10 percent of $10,000 bail.
On July 13 at 3:29 p.m., Eve-
sham police officers conducting
undercover surveillance ob-
served a hand-to-hand drug sale
in the parking lot of the WaWa
Convenience Store, 270 Greentree
Road.
During the investigation Eve-
sham Police K-9 Ciko was sum-
moned to the scene to assist offi-
cers with the detection of nar-
cotics.
Ciko arrived on location and
alerted officers to the presence of
narcotics inside the suspects ve-
hicle.
Officers conducted a search of
the vehicle and discovered four
different types of prescription
pills, recovering 38 pills in total.
The suspect, age 29, of Marlton,
was charged with third-degree
distribution of narcotics and
third-degree possession of pre-
scription pills.
He was released on his own re-
cognizance.
On July 14, the Evesham Police
Department arrested a West
Berlin man who fled from an Eve-
sham police officer on June 6.
The investigation began
around 12:01 a.m., when an Eve-
sham police officer patrolling in-
side the Data Driven Approach to
Crime and Traffic Safety Zone ob-
served a sports motorcycle driv-
ing recklessly on Route 70.
The driver, later identified, did
not stop for the officer and a pur-
suit ensued.
The officer terminated the pur-
suit, once the risk and necessity
of the pursuit endangered public
safety.
The investigation of the pur-
suit led to the identification of
the driver and an arrest warrant
was issued.
On July 14, with the assistance
of the Cherry Hill Police Depart-
ment, the driver was located and
taken into custody.
The suspect, age 27 of West
Berlin, was charged with second-
degree eluding and numerous
motor vehicle violations.
He was lodged in the Burling-
ton County Jail in default of
$25,000 full cash bail.
On Tuesday July 16 at 12:07
a.m., the Evesham Police Depart-
ment responded to the BP Gas
Station, 929 W. Route 70 for an
armed robbery in progress.
Investigation determined that
two males, one armed with a
handgun, approached the atten-
dant on foot after he had just fin-
ished pumping gas.
They then forced their way into
the office at which time they stole
approximately $400 from the reg-
ister. The suspects then fled on
foot toward Conestoga Drive.
Responded officers quickly es-
tablished a multi-block perimeter
and a K-9 track was conducted.
It was determined from the K-9
track that the suspects likely en-
tered a waiting get-away car.
