SUPERBOY

FADE IN: INT. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLASSROOM - DAY A quaint, modern classroom. Kids, no older than 10, sit in individual desks, pointed at a blackboard at the front. At the blackboard is MRS. HARSON (30 ish), pretty, wearing a summer dress. Sitting in a desk in the second row is a chubby blonde boy, BUDDY (9), leaning on his arm, deep in thought. MANS VOICE (V.O.) Buddys got one damaged nerve, hes not a freak! He dont need surgery! Buddys head slips, he jolts. MRS. HARSON Buddy - last warning. Buddy nods, face flushes red. INT. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLASSROOM - LATER Mrs. Harson sits at her desk, the class is silent, save for the sound of pencils scratching paper. Buddy tinkers with a superman action figure in his lap. A skinny, tall kid, ANDY, sits behind Buddy. He leans forward, pinches Buddy right in the back of the arm, as hard as he can - smiling wide. Buddy doesnt acknowledge it. Andys expression turns to confusion - he taps Buddys soldier, he turns. BUDDY Whats up? Andy pinches his arm - Buddy just watches him. ANDY (whispering) You dont feel that? Buddy shakes his head, giggles. Andy nods his head at LISA, a pretty brunette sitting next to Buddy. ANDY (CONTD) Pass it on.

Buddy smiles, leans over, pinches Lisa very gently - she jumps upLISA Buddy!! Knock it off, seriously! Mrs. Harson looks up. MRS. HARSON Buddy, enough. Buddy glances at Andy - hes scribbling away at his worksheet. EXT. PLAYGROUND - DAY Kids play soccer, basketball, tag, or just talk in groups. BUDDY Sits alone, makes his superman figurine fight off swarms of ants. Andy approaches him. ANDY Hey, our soccer ball went into the pond, would you mind grabbing it for us? Buddy sets the figurine down, gets up. BUDDY Thats fine. EXT. POND Buddy, water almost to his shorts, grabs the soccer ball from the pond. MRS. HARSON Everyone back inside, times up! Buddy turns, Andy and the rest are already running off. He dries the ball off with his shirt and hurries inside. INT. CLASSROOM All the kids settle in - Buddy checks his pockets, then raises his hand.

MRS. HARSON Yes? BUDDY Can I go back and grab my superman figure, please? Snickers from the class. MRS. HARSON You can get it at afternoon recess. INT. CLASSROOM - LATER Mrs. Harson lectures at the board - the door opens, a man in a suit beckons her out. MRS. HARSON Just a moment, kids. She leaves. The kids all around Buddy start talking. Andy taps him, he turns. ANDY (to his friends) Check this out. (to Buddy) Im gonna pinch you, kay? BUDDY Okay. Andy pinches the back of his arm, his wrist shaking from exerting so much force. His friends wince at the sight, Buddy just smiles. ANDYS FRIENDS Whoa!! Lisa leans into the conversationLISA Andy, looks like Buddys tougher than you. With a triumphant smile, she turns away. Any sticks his arm out. ANDY Pinch it Buddy. If you can do it, I can.

Buddy pinches it - Andy grimacesANDY (CONTD) Keep going! Buddy pinches harder - Andy YELPS, pulls away. Mrs. Harson comes in, spots Andy holding his arm, goes over, grabs it; it has a massive, purple and red bruise. He points at Buddy. EXT. PLAYGROUND - LATER All the kids laugh and play, Andy shows off his bruise. INT. CLASSROOM Buddy sits alone, Mrs. Harmon grades papers. BUDDY What about my superman figure? MRS. HARSON (without looking up) Itll be there tomorrow. Buddy looks down at his desk - holds back tears. INT. CAR, MOVING - LATER Buddys MOM drives, talks on the phone, Buddy sits in the passenger seat. MOM (into phone) Ascii, moron, ascii! Information! BUDDY Mom? MOM Yes, sweetie? BUDDY Am I supposed to do what other people tell me? MOM Only if its what you think is the right thing to do sweetie.

INT. CLASSROOM - MORNING Buddy sits down at his desk, Andy excitedly taps his shoulder, he turns. A big kid, JOHN, stands next to him. ANDY Let John pinch you. Buddy shakes his head, turns back around. Andy pokes him. ANDY (CONTD) Cmon, you big baby! I let you pinch me! BUDDY Nope. Mrs. Harmon comes in, shushes the class. INT. CLASSROOM - LATER The bell rings, all the kids rush out the door - Mrs. Harson stops Buddy. MRS. HARSON Be nice to the other children, today, please. I dont want to make a call home. Buddy nods, runs out. EXT. PLAYGROUND Andy toys with the superman figurine, Buddy approaches, sticks his hand out. Andy snickers, holds it out of his reach. Buddy tries to grab it, Andy jumps away. BUDDY Give it to me, now. Andy swings it, buddy snatches his wrist as he tries to pull away, squeezes - Andy drops the figurine, Buddy lets go. ANDY Jerk! Andy runs off. Buddy picks it up, brushes it off, and goes back to fighting ants, smiles.
