Fundraising Event for International Trip 2013:Pie A Teacher

byAlastair Lim Chen Yuan

April 16-17:Group 4 Project

A compulsory project that encourages students to appreciate the environmental, social and ethical implications of science. This exercise is collaborative and interdisciplinary and provides an opportunity for students to explore scientific solutions to global questions.

The Pie-A-Teacher Fundraising Event allows students to contribute to charity while being able to get back at their teachers at the same time. Following the success of last years Pie a Teacher event that was held by the IB seniors, this years IB students called for a revival. The idea of smashing a pie into a teachers face was obviously too good to pass up. Just one rule of course: the smashing should not be too severe for it to harm any of the teachers face. How the event works is rather simple. Teachers are asked to volunteer by agreeing to being pied if their stated prices were achieved. When a teachers price has been reached, an announcement would be made for the time of the pie-ing. The chosen person who will pie the teacher is the one who donates the highest amount for the specific teacher. Before the pie-ing takes place, the IB prep team will have to get the teacher wrapped in plastic overalls and shower caps for hygiene purposes. After a quick preparation, a 10-second countdown is held right before the teachers are pied. As the countdown reaches its last syllable at one, the pie crashes right into the victims face and the crowd goes wild shouting for more.

This years Pie a Teacher was needless to say, heaps of fun and a large success. The whole event ran smoothly and the exhibitions were delectable. Although many teachers were left untouched, those who had their filling of pie got what they deserved. And this is not the end. They only got their dessert.

The New TCSH Principal:

Ms. Lauren

byHafizuddenKhalis bin Mohamed Nizam

As the TCSH students were ushered into the new year of 2013, we were greeted by a new and wonderful addition to our Taylors community- the new principal of TCSH, Ms. Lauren Elizabeth Wilson. She, who started her work in mid-January, is now wellreceived and loved by the TCSH community for her ever-cheerful and friendly demeanour, close connections with students, and constant encouragement towards students activities and initiatives. Ms. Lauren found her calling in teaching at a very young age. She was inspired by the great storytelling skills showed by her English teacher in Grade 3 and her brilliant Mathematics teacher in Grade 9. She graduated from York University, Toronto in 1979 and began as a Mathematics and Computer Science teacher in Ottawa. At the height of her career, she was promoted as the Assistant Head Principal and later, the Head Principal. In the late nineties, Ms. Lauren decided to join a private international school in Venezuela as the principal for four years to experience and immerse herself in a different culture and setting from Canada. When asked about Malaysian students in general, she finds us polite, determined and hardworking. However, she feels we do not understan understand the true meaning of education as we spend too much time memorizingfor examinations. To be globally competitive and be aware of the world we live in, she believes that Malaysian students need to be more inquisitive, be involved in more discussions, resear research deeply into the things that we are passionate about and question the things around us and our world as a whole. The one thing that keeps Miss Lauren young at heart and always on her feet is the youngenergetic students here here. Although she feels that we are re self-centered self sometimes, she is determined to change that by encouraging us to start having a sense of responsibility for our actions in the world we live in. She wants us to open our eyes a little more and allow ourselves to immerse in the endless possibilities ibilities life has to offer. Emulating Miss Lauren and looking up to heras a role model is easy. She believes that if we can find our passion, use this to our advantage and embrace our weaknesses, we will get the best from life. "Embrace life," she believes. "Because it is such a unique and wonderful gift that anyone could ever ask for."

French Film Festival 2013

byQuekSiew Yean

The Emcees of the French Film Festival 2013 getting ready to host and kickstart the event in French and English.

The French Film Festival 2013 took place on the 14th of March March. It showcased the individual talents of TCSH's IB students to explore their individual creativity by creating a short film that incorporates both our unique Malaysian cu culture and the exquisite French language. Our French teacher, Miss Moi Moi initiated the idea of creating the short film to encourage the IB French students to explore French beyond their classrooms and apply them in their daily lives. From best actor to b best film, there were ten awards given to individuals and groups who stood out the most among the six short films

submitted. Four judges sat down and voted for their favorite film based on the French content, creativity and overall performance by the group members. 'La Maison D'amour' won the best film for fusing comedy and love into one film while 'Affaire Rouleau De Papier Toilette' won the best script for its unique storyline that touches on every student's dilemma in balancing academics and their social life. Although these awards were only for the crme de la crme, everyone did a great job in producing entertainment that tickled the belly and left us gasping for more.

Incitement Youth!: Featuring Ms. Loh

byChin KarYern On 28th February 2013, Incitement Youth was held in the TCSH Library. This event was a talk about sharing ideas and inciting positivity within the community of students. The theme was relevant to the current discourse both among students and within Malaysia: Redefining Education. We had five speakers: DzameerZulkifli, CEO of Teach for Malaysia, DatoSaifuddin Abdullah, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Miss Anne Tham, Co-Founder of Ace-Edventure, Michael Reyes, CEO of MoneyTree, and our very own Miss Loh Mei Lin, our Theory of Knowledge (TOK) lecturer. Each of them had their ideas of changing the education but they seemed to converge at some points. Miss Loh spoke about the nature of Theory of Knowledge across different areas of knowledge. She talked about the different ways of knowing used in these areas and how and why they would differ from one another. She also wondered about the possibilities to implement TOK within the current education system to train students to think critically and have a holistic perspective on knowledge. Overall, it was an inspiring event with a powerful message for parents, ex-students and students. The sharing of ideas opened up to new possibilities that in future education may indeed be redefined.

IBDP Leadership Camp

byHannah Khaw Huey Mei

On 1 1-2 March 2013, I headed to the wild jungle or more precisely, to the Dusun Eco Resort, Pahang along with my fellow comrades from the IB program programme. Along with TCSHs club presidents, vice presidents and editorial board members, we went there for a leadership camp organized by the ECA department. Upon reaching the campsite, all participants were assigned to groups and told to create a group cheer. Here, it so happened that my group was chock chock-full of people with quirky tastes and a rather odd sense of humor. So we named ourselves The Pandas, appointed a rather chunky Chief Panda Panda, and stomped around him in a circle while chanting, Panda! Panda! We love bamboo! Our first team team-building event was the flying fox activity. This, in my opinion, was particularly amusing as I had the opportunity to observe my beloved IB mates in their most comical moments. It was wonderful to see Justin being petrified of heights; Ray being scared losing his fatherhood due to the tightness of the harness; and Arif bringing his laptop bag and iPad along with him as he whizzed through the sky. Dinner t that day was a splendid outdoor affair. A campfire was lit and everyone gathered at a pleasant, grassy area. At one point in time, all the IB juniors came together, and spearheaded by none other than Eleasha Eleasha, webegan to indulge in one of our most cherished IB pastimes singing. In harmony, The Lion King. Later on in the night, we had a jungle jungle-walk scheduled for us. But as luck would have it, big, heavy raindrops began pelting down right before we had to head off to the dark recesses of the jungle. So we w waited. And waited.(And hoped that the rain would never stop.) But as Murphys Law goes: Anything

that can go wrong, will go wrong. So the rain stopped. We were immediately sent back to our groups, and began the long trudge through the jungle. It would have h been a wet, muddy and miserable march but my groups panda spirit was indomitable. In particular, Rays signature line was: Good job guys, good job. This would have seemed to be quite a typical pick-me-up pick in a typical teambuilding event except for the fact that this line was used for absolutely everything. Ray said, Good job guys, good job when we completed a head count in the dark; when we crossed through a muddy patch; when any of us suffered from a leech attack. In fact, we were doing a good job even when we were doing nothing. The following day, we took part in yet another teambuilding event. This time, we had to construct a raft. My group worked together exceptionally well; and in the end, we created a sturdy raft that we were actually rather rath proud of. The next (and final) teambuilding activity was an obstacle course. For short moments in time, we pandas morphed first, into monkeys in order to swing from tire to tire; then into slithery salamanders in order to complete the commando crawl; and also into spiders in order to navigate our way through cruel webs of string. At the end of the day, every member of my group managed to successfully complete the course, thus proving that chubby and cute can indeed conquer. All in all, the camp was an a interesting experience we enjoyed a great time of bonding among our wonderful IB mates, with our new friends from other programmes, program and also with some new friends who came a bit too close for comfort (such as leeches).

The crowd stood up to give a round of applause to the speakers signaling the end of the event.
