Semester Offered Course Synopsis

Semester 3, 2011/2012 The rise of information economies, globalization of trade and the growth of the Internet has recast the role of information systems in business and management. The aim of this course in to provide the students an understanding of the role and position of information systems in todays business organizations. The course is based mainly on the discussion of information revolution in business as well as management of the networked enterprise. To emphasize the practical utilization of concepts covered in the course, discussions on some case studies will be included. Attempts will be made to integrate Islamic perspectives in various aspects of the course.

Course Objectives

The main objectives of this course are as follows: 1. To emphasize the strategic roles of Information Systems (IS) to business managers and professionals 2. To discuss the basic concepts and functions of information systems and describe their uses and implications in the business world 3. To describe how businesses use Internet and other information technologies to support their business processes, e-business, ecommerce initiatives and business decision-making 4. To discuss how to plan, develop and implement IT-based business strategies and application. 5. To emphasize the main security, ethical and societal issues and challenges in ICT

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the students would be able to: 1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts, functions and implications of IS to organizations. 2. apply the IS concept to solve organizational problems as well as to capitalize on opportunities identified. 3. work in a team to apply knowledge, skills and tools in IS.
