Which wines are best for barbecues?

Summer grilling triggers two very different types of wine in my mind: First, there are the crisp, dry or semi-dry, white and ros wines that really satisfy when served very chilled. You may not think of wine as necessarily a thirst quencher, but a refreshing white wine, like Pinot Grigio, and some dry ros wines can be quite refreshing. The other wine style that comes to mind for a barbecue is richly flavored reds like Syrah, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. The reason is because of barbecue sauce that usually smothers grilled chicken or ribs. I like the combination of the sweet and spicy flavor in the sauce with the full body and rich, dark fruitiness of these wines. Ive long been a big fan of Syrah but I have also grown pretty fond of the Petite Sirah as well. Both wines have an exotic black fruitiness with a spicy edge but the Petite Sirah has an additional boldness to it that can be jarring in a good way. Red Zinfandel also delivers a spicy fruit flavor that lends itself to summer grilling. Just keep in mind that these full-bodied red wines tend to come with higher alcohol levels than white wines and even many other red wines. Of course, when it comes to wine and food I always state that your personal preference takes precedent over any suggestions I make. If you only drink Merlot, for example, then thats what you should drink with barbecue. But, if youre in the mood to explore, try one of these alternatives. As I have mentioned in the past, Pinot Noir is a good wine to serve when you need to satisfy many different palates even at a barbecue. Its the perfect red wine if you are looking for something safe not too light, not too big. It can handle grilled fish as well as mild red meats served without rich sauces. Another is Beaujolais from France. It is even light enough to go with summer salads (and can even be served slightly chilled) and filled with bright, cherry-like fruit. Great without food, too.

Whats in a Name? Sustainable, Organic & Biodynamic Defined

Its a question which bedevils even longtime wine and wine trade insiders: what really is the difference between the terms sustainable, organic and biodynamic? And do the distinctions matter at all? Whats really being asked, in my opinion, is how much is marketing magic and how much is winegrowing truth, how much is it everyone drinking from the same grapeaid, and how much is it a reflection of the realities of commercial wine production? Its a mixture of all of the above, of course! Everyone, perhaps, by now understands what organic means in terms of not using chemicals or ecologically disruptive practices, but in the context of wine, it gets a lot trickier, especially for small wineries, which is why there are way more wines labeled Made with Organic Grapes than straight up organic wines. It is considerably easier to get certification showing that the organic-ness of the grapes, derived through the grower, is preserved through the winemaking than to get a winery or wine certified as wholly organic. It is not impossible, but it is costly and leaves little room for error in the cellar. Among a number of technical issues, there is an absolute limit on sulfite usage, which knocks out most commercial wines because of the larger batch process in which they are produced and the necessity to have preservation of the wines in the cellar, once bottled, and while on store shelves and wine racks. Going this one better, biodynamic, as Nigel Tufnel would have said, puts organic on eleven. Based on the writings of Rudolf Steiner, proponents of this agricultural philosophy argue for integrative methods akin to organic practices but also root those strategies within a system of nature-based energy wherein the goal is to recharge the land ecologically and spiritually; and there is a certification agency, Demeter, whose imprenteur producers must receive in order for the labels to legally proclaim the wines biodynamic. While a number of very high-end producers in the United States and internationally winegrow according to these principles, it is expensive and timeconsuming, which is why it remains as a smaller niche in the larger wine world. Are biodynamic wines better? Taste is in the tongue of the imbiber. So, where, then, does sustainable fit into this discussion? Its the least rigorous but the most honest in terms of the kinds of compromises winegrowers often have to make. While there is a set of proscribed Lodi Rules, and there are other sustainable certifications, too, much is self-assessed and self-reported agriculture. More importantly, the sustainable growers I know will say they are essentially farming organically or biodynamically all the time, but they withhold their vineyards from both the costs of certification or, due to accidental exposure, re-certification and from the potential losses of being hard hit by, for example, a pest they are unable to eradicate except through commercially-necessary, non-organic practices. It is far easier to discuss these options when it is not the potential loss of your crop or vines; sustainable winegrowing forthrightly says commerce and stewardship can go hand in hand through integrative processes like composting and natural fermentations rather than the alternatives: unnecessary chemical use or working against the land in the production process. As you can see, the potential for these terms to be meaningful rests with consumer understanding and willingness to ask questions. Since sustainable, in particular, is a much more wide-open term, it behooves the interested wine lover to ask questions about how the grapes are grown and what terms are or are not used on the producers labels. Youll often find that the absences have little to do with actual winegrowing processes at all and more often than not result from decisions necessary to keep the winery in business. If nothing else, your next conversation with a winemaker should be much more engaging since these are the issues shes really thinking about behind that smile. Enjoy!

Heading to the Tasting Room

BY ChARLES NEAVE

Do not be intimidated for any reason. That is rule number one (and there are very few real rules after that). For the most part, going wine tasting is about the easiest thing in the world, especially here in California where wineries and tasting rooms abound. You can find wineries specializing in red wines of all types, those that are famous for their white wines and others who pour sparkling wine. It is a matter of doing a little research and planning your day. Most tasting rooms open around 10 a.m. and close between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Before you start off pack a few essentials: Water (plenty of water) and something to snack on crackers or a baguette. Many wineries have picnic areas and there are plenty of delis and bakeries that can make up a lunch for you, or make your own. Which brings us to eating and drinking, the kind that doesnt directly involve wine. Be sure to nibble during the day and make sure you make time for lunch. Two tips: drink at least twice as much water as you do wine, and remember that you dont have to drink everything poured into your glass. There is a reason tasting bars have dump buckets and a pitcher of water to wash out your glass. That said, here are some tips that have proven to be helpful and are designed to help make the sensory adventure of wine tasting all the more enjoyable. Dont be afraid to ask questions. Time and time again I have heard knowledgeable winery workers say that there is no such thing as a stupid question, and they mean that. You can drink what you want, in the order you want. If you only like reds, say so; if you dont like sweet wines, speak up. But the idea of starting with whites, then going on to reds and then sweet wines is a good guide. Zinfandel is red. I am sure you know that but it never hurts to remind everyone. If there is a particular wine you want to try and it is not on the list, ask. There might be a bottle around that was opened for a trade tasting or by the winemaker. Most tasting rooms are happy to pour a little if you show enthusiasm. If you plan to take wine home with you, either in the car or on a plane, buy a cardboard box with Styrofoam wine inserts. Fill it during the day and this keeps wine from rolling around in the trunk. Check out the smaller wineries. It is a revelation. Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed. Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep in mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an hour, so one a day is plenty. Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production Ports or dessert wines. Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back home. Youll pay more, and besides, whats the point? Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many of these are cooperative

tasting rooms, where in one place you might find wines from a dozen or more small-to-medium premium producers. They are scattered throughout the area and more are opening all the time. Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like art: if you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that. Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no more than a phone call to rent anything from a Town Car or restored classic convertible to stretch limos and a 20-passenger bus. All have drivers that will stow your wine for you and the local companies know the area. As to taking that wine home, ten people sharing one of those impossibly long limousines is fine and fun, but if you all plan to buy a couple of cases the trunk which is no bigger than a normal luxury cars is going to fill up fast and youre going to find yourself filling the interior floor with boxes and using cases of Cabernet as footrest. Tell the transportation company what you have in mind and listen to their advice. They know the territory and the people and personalities. Know your limits. If you get close to it let others taste and you can listen. It beats ending the day in a blur, and if need be calling a taxi is cheaper than the alternative. And if at a seated tasting, dont be afraid to leave a gratuity. Its more than worth the five or ten dollars to get wisdom and wine and a great time.

LAETITIA WINERY
Three Sparkling Decades
BY MIChAEL CERVIN

Its time for a party as Laetitia celebrates their 30th anniversary. Formed in 1982 as the U.S. extension of well-known French winery Champagne Maison Deutz, it was planted by French enologists providing the grapes for their Mthode Champenoise sparkling wines under the original Maison Deutz label. In 1997 the vineyard was renamed after the new owners daughter, Laetitia, which in Latin is an expression meaning joy and happiness. Laetitia is best known for their Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays but also for sparkling wines, and they are one of the few Central Coast wineries that even makes bubbly wines. Two rare European wooden basket presses made by the Coquard Company of France gently crush the grapes destined to become sparkling wines. Though very labor intensive to operate, these presses deliver superior quality juice with exceptional clarity. The winery is also fortunate to have gravely clay soil which keeps the vines well drained, and the cooling breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean help insure optimum acid and sugar levels. Back in 1985 I was offered a job to work at what was then Deutz Winery, says sparkling winemaker Dave Hickey (his son Eric makes all the still wines). We bottled our single 1984 sparkling wine that spring and little did I realize that I would still be here in 2013 to see the start of our 30th vintage of wines. There were only a few wine tanks back then, most of the winery was empty, and there was no tasting room. There was only one Coquard Champagne Press, we had to buy most of our grapes and there were only two employees, myself and the winemaker Dave recalls. Wow, how things have changed. Weve changed our focus to producing still wines, in particular rich and complex Pinot Noirs, but we still produce bubbles - not just one, but seven different sparkling wines, he says. Laetitia Winery offers two distinct labels: NADIA (red and white Bordeaux and Rhone varieties from their second vineyard, Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, in Santa Barbara County) and the Laetitia label of Pinot Noir and sparkling. In fact Laetitia holds the largest privately owned Pinot Noir

plantings in all of California. The estate is comprised of just under 2,000 acres, with about 620 acres planted to grape vines. At about 70,000 cases of wine, the tasting room houses four wine bars to accommodate the throngs of visitors. With a diversity of wines from Cabernet to Viognier to Tempranillo and Syrah, there is a wine and price point for everyone. New things are always happening here and the NADIA Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc will be released August 1st followed by the Laetitia Estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on September 1st. Their annual Grape Stomp is tentatively scheduled for August 24th, depending on harvest. And this year they have been raking in the awards: A gold medal from the Central Coast Wine Competition for their Brut Cuve, a gold medal at the LA International Wine and Spirits Competition for their Brut Ros and big wins at the Sunset International Wine Competition. A special Dual Winemaker Dinner celebrating their 30th Anniversary will be held at the Laetitia Estate house on September 14th. It has been an amazing journey, says Dave. I guess time flies when youre making sparkling wine! So stop in, taste some wine, sip a sparkler, play bocce ball or picnic at their tables overlooking the vineyard and ocean. Laetitia Winery is open every day between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., right off Highway 101 between Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo. Contact them directly at (888) 809-VINE, or www.laetitiawine.com.

COGHLAN VINEYARD & JEWELERS

For three generations the Coghlan family has earned high esteem in the fine jewelry business. In 2009, Eric and Samantha Coghlan turned their discerning eyes to the production of ultra-premium wines from the distinguished appellations of the Santa Ynez Valley. Since opening the doors of their dream storefront in Los Olivos, the Coghlans have creatively combined the two art forms, which they delight in sharing with locals and visitors alike. Enjoy their charming garden and colorful showroom filled with artisan jewelry pieces created by Samantha and Eric all the while savoring exquisite, handcrafted wines and chocolates infused with Coghlan wine. Eric and Samantha have created three tasting options for you to choose from: The first is their original lineup that includes Grenache Blanc, Pinot Noir and Bordeaux varietals. Theyve also added a Pinot-only tasting highlighting their three renowned Pinot Noirs. Last is their new chocolate and wine-paired tasting, which is a really fun way to indulge your senses. The Coghlans unique passion for gemology and oenology culminates at their shop and tasting room in downtown Los Olivos. They spent many long months creating their dream retail storefront and have not missed a note. Their eye for colorful beauty and detail is imaginative and addictive. Although they share great passion for their store and vineyards, Eric and Samanthas most important venture is their two beautiful boys, Ozzy and Cash. The family dreams that one day the boys will continue the Coghlan legacy as fourth generation jewelers and second generation winemakers. Eric and Samantha source Pinot Noir grapes from acclaimed single vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills appellation and use Bordeaux and Rhone variety grapes from their own estate, which is in the process of becoming organically certified. Their astute sourcing talents from premier wine-growing properties is the basis for their flavorful and complex wines. This last year has been a very exhilarating one for Eric and Samantha: They bottled their first Estate wines a 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cabernet Port, which is Erics creation. They are also looking forward to the release of a very limited bottling of V's Estate Cabernet. This wine is dedicated to the memory of Samantha's mother. There will only be 40 cases of this wine available. Eric and Samantha have chosen the best barrels of Cabernet from their Estate vineyard to showcase in this very significant bottle of wine. Visitors can taste wine, indulge in wine-infused truffles, browse jewelry, play bocce ball in the yard, and enjoy the nostalgic nature of the home, which boasts a rich history. Originally a Sears kit home built in the late 1890s and formerly owned by the Whitmore family (long-time prominent in the Los Olivos art community), Eric and Samantha were eager to maintain the integrity and wonderful character of the original property. The couple are constantly creating unique jewelry pieces that are on display in the house. At Coghlan, fine wine, jewelry, art and nature all contribute to the quintessential Los Olivos experience.

Open daily 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 2366 Alamo Pintado, Los Olivos, CA (805) 686-2395 | www.coghlanvineyard.com

LINCOURT VINEYARDS
Attention to Detail
BY MIChAEL CERVIN

Winemaker, Leslie Mead Renaud

Open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 1711 Alamo Pintado Road, between the towns of Los Olivos and Solvang Groups of six or more are requested to make reservations. (805) 688-8554 | www.lincourtwines.com

There are a few standards that define the Foley Family, who own and operate Lincourt Vineyards, that have made them stand the test of time in a constantly evolving wine industry. Lincourt focuses on all estate wines, sustainably farmed, made in small lots with hands on detail from the winemaker from bud-break to the bottle. This kind of attention to detail sets them apart from most other Santa Barbara wineries. Lincourt Winery is named for the daughters of owner Bill Foley - Lindsay and Courtney, respectively. Aside from that tidbit, the yellow Craftsman house the tasting room is located in, is an authentic 1926 Sears Catalogue kit house model purchased for about $400 back in the day. So what better vehicle to house Lincourts best-known wines - Pinot Noir and Chardonnay? They also do Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot very well, from an area not known for these wines. There is a front patio with big round tables where you can enjoy your wine and also a hilly grass area in front of the tasting room with great views of the vineyard, and you can bring your dog. The tasting room is full not only of excellent wines, but gift items and books. Founded in 1996 by Bill Foley, Lincourt produces premium wines from Santa Barbara County. With vineyards in the cooler Santa Maria Valley, and the warmer Santa Ynez Valley, Lincourt is one of those rare wineries capable of producing world-class bottlings from both Bordeaux and Burgundian varieties. Winemaker Leslie Mead Renaud was brought on board in 2010 to apply her deft touch to the wines. Im thrilled to have been hired by Lincourt, Leslie says. Ive always been a huge fan of their wines, especially the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Their estate vineyards are impeccable and their philosophy of quality and authenticity are perfectly aligned with my own beliefs. And her beliefs of sustainable farming techniques, block harvesting, small-lot

vinifications, the use of French oak barrels and an intelligent blend of traditional and modern winemaking methods have elevated Lincourt to the upper echelon of tasting rooms. And Renaud has access to a lot of perfect grapes from perfect growing areas. One relatively unknown fact is that Lincourt and sister winery Foley Estates own just over 25 percent of grape acreage in the Santa Rita Hills appellation. Since we control both the farming and the winemaking, we are able to pick each vineyard block separately and keep them separate throughout the entire winemaking process, Leslie adds. This of course allows the winemaking to be extraordinarily focused on individual wines and blends. But the wines also feature indigenous, or native yeasts, not commercially purchased yeasts as most wineries do. That may seem like a small thing, since yeast is not visible to the naked eye, but natural yeasts best express the individual vineyard sites. And though you may not be immediately aware of it, you can taste these distinctions in the Lincourt wines. Available currently are the Lincourt 2011 Chardonnay and 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, both stainless-steel fermented with citrusy, honeysuckle aromatics, perfect for warm summer days. At Lincourt the bottle prices range from $18 to $50 and the tasting fees are $10. So step inside the historic tasting room for some modern wine and taste the attention to detail. Visit Lincourt Winery located at 1711 Alamo Pintado Rd. just outside of Solvang. They are open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Contact them directly at (805) 688-8554, or www.lincourtwines.com.

WINEMAKER PROFILE

DAVID GALZIGNATO
Jada Vineyard
BY CAThY NEUShUL

Open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 5620 Vineyard Drive, off highway 46 West, Paso Robles (805) 226-4200 |www.jadavineyard.com

With Paso Robles as a nexus for the winemaking community, David Galzignato is right in the position he likes best at the point where tradition and innovation meet. As winemaker for Jada Vineyard, he is involved in using traditional tools, such as custom-designed French oak barrels, to produce wines in an area whose full potential has as yet to be explored. Its definitely an exciting time to be in Paso Robles, he said. Winemakers in the area are exploring ways to make the best wines using traditional themes paired with modern innovations. And, according to Galzignato, there is no limit to what Paso Robles winemakers can produce. I think that Paso has the versatility to do every variety, very well, he said. He moved to the area two and a half years ago, recognizing the areas potential. There are lots of these macroclimates, and we are still exploring each ones individual personality. In addition, the diurnal shifts in temperature in Paso Robles are just right for growing world-class wines, Galzignato said. There can be a 50-degree differential between day and night time temperatures. At night, the cooler temperatures allow the grapes to rest. Winemaking is something Galzignato said that came very naturally to him. While at school at UC Davis, he took a class in winemaking and everything just clicked. Later on, he took a trip to Italy to visit relatives and the reason for his interest in winemaking became clear. I saw their passion for their vineyards, the tradition, and the local historyit all made sense, he added. After graduating, Galzignato continued on his winemaking journey. He lived in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Italy and Washington State. He worked for both big and small vineyards to gain as much knowledge as possible. I wanted to work with different winemakers, and work in various vineyard appellations , he said. He has been the winemaker at Paraduxx, Lewis Cellars, Landy Family Vineyards and Charles Krug. Jada Vineyards is known for its Rhone and Bordeaux-style wines. Galzignato said producing the Rhone wines provide a particular enticement. The most fun, exciting and challenging are the Rhone wines. They are a whole different animal, he said. If you want to talk to Galzignato about winemaking, or taste some of the wines he has produced, since joining Jada, including new releases of the winerys popular Hells Kitchen and Jack of Hearts labels, stop by Jada Vineyards.

Wineflite is Here to Ship Your Wine Purchases

Wineflite hires Daniel Webber as a great addition to the Wineflite Team. Daniel was familiar with WF having used our service while working for a major winery in Napa. He saw his customers reaction, when wanting to ship wine, and decided to approach us to see if he could become a member of our team. When asked to tell us a little about how he feels being involved with the first online wine shipping company for the international tourist, here is what Daniel has to say: After studying Economics at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, I knew I wanted to be involved in a growing industry. International wine shipping has always been in demand, but until recently it has been difficult for wineries to utilize this type of service. Having experience in wine sales I can understand that intimidated feeling one can have when trying to get wine to customers abroad. The best part of my job is when I see the relief on peoples faces when we explain that we can guarantee delivery of quality wine, taking care of all logistics involved with freight and customs. It is wonderful to be part of a company that has aligned its incentives so perfectly with that of the winery and the wine consumer. Wineflite is thrilled to have Daniel join their international network of Brand Agents located in every wine region of the world. Each agent is focused on helping wine businesses assist their guests in shipping wine back to their home. Wineflite is getting positive feedback from wine businesses regarding Daniel. He has great energy, and a positive winning attitude. We look forward to great things with Daniel on board.

Rotary Winemakers Cookoff Announces 2013 Lineup of Judges

The Paso Robles Rotary Club announced its lineup of judges for the 2013 Winemakers Cookoff fund raiser scheduled for Saturday, August 10. The judging crew consists of the five respected food and wine industry professionals: Robert Whitley, San Diego-based syndicated wine writer and wine-industry judge; Mike Cervin, Santa Barbara-based food and wine journalist and author; Kathy MarcksHardesty, local wine industry journalist; Brigit Binns, a Central Coast author of 26 cookbooks; and Lisa Pretty, a Paso Robles food and wine writer and owner of Pretty Smith Vineyards and Winery. This is an extremely experienced and cohesive group of judges, says Sharon Ross, the chairwoman if the Rotary Winemakers Cookoff. The judges duties are to sample the wine and food pairings prepared on site and served to event attendees by the 30 participating wineries to determine winners of the Judges Choice awards. In a parallel food and wine pairing competition, participating winemakers solicit votes from attendees for the Peoples Choice awards. Enjoy choice wine and excellent food prepared by some of the best winemakers in the Paso Robles Appellation. Tickle your tastebuds, listen to live music by Julie Beaver & the Bad Dogs, and have a great time while benefiting local high-school seniors. The Paso Robles Rotary will again bring over 30 Paso Robles winemakers together to compete to see who is the best chef, and organizers expect the tickets to sell out fast. The 15th Annual Winemakers Cookoff will be held August 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Paso Robles Event Center. Organizers are limiting attendance to just 1,200 tickets. Tickets are $75 and are sale at pasorobleswinemakerscookoff.eventbrite.com. The Paso Robles Winemakers Cookoff has become one of Paso Robles most-popular wine, food and music events, says event cochairperson Bob Fonarow. Participating wineries pair their grilled culinary creations with their finest wines and compete for both Judges Choice and Peoples Choice awards the day of the event. We are expecting tickets to sell out fast. All proceeds from the event benefit local high school scholarships. Thanks to the event, The Paso Robles Rotary contributed $30,000 to Paso Robles High School scholarships last year. Since 1999, the Rotary Club has created a perpetual fund of more than $400,000 called the Harlow Ford Scholarship Fund. IQMS is returning as the title sponsor of the event. The IQMS sponsorship of the Rotary event underscores our companys commitment toward the education and support of our local youth, said Randy Flamm, President and C.E.O. of IQMS. As we continue to prosper here, our involvement in helping to further the goal of an event like the Cookoff is one way of giving back. SAN LUIS OBSIPO COUNTY

ts no wonder the people here call it SLO. No one is in any hurry in the cafs or on the sidewalks, and certainly no one is in any rush to leave. Strangers are genuinely friendly, always ready to talk about their favorite hiking trail or barbecue joint, or to point the way to the winery with the best Pinot Noir. Its all part of the SLO life, that combination of good stuff that makes visiting here so nourishing to the soul.

San Luis Obispos unusual natural beauty, along with its gentle climate, first attracted the Spanish padres to the area in the 1700s. In 1772 they built the fifth of Californias 21 missions here, on the banks of San Luis Creek, and named it Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today, many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions.
More than 200 wineries produce critically acclaimed vintages in Paso Robles, Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley. Visitors can head out along the gorgeous country roads to sip their way through the vineyards. For more information on San Luis Obispo County, go to visitslo.com or visit www.pasowine.com.

PREFERRED TASTING ROOM

VILLA SAN JULIETTE

BY BRETTE ANN WOMACK

The tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Available for private events. 6385 Cross Canyons Road in San Miguel (805) 467-0014 | www.villasanjuliette.com

Just north of Paso Robles, San Miguel is gaining notoriety for its vineyards and estate wineries. Villa San Juliette is quickly becoming one of the areas most popular venues. The 170-acre property was planted to 11 grape varieties in the late 80s. In 2005, executive producers, Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe, purchased the property with the idea of owning the estate, selling grapes and eventually retiring on the Central Coast. During the 2006 harvest, they decided to keep a tiny amount of juice for themselves and produced a total of 250 cases of wine, most of which was gifted to friends. By 2008, Ken & Nigel decided that they would like to keep more of the fruit and start their own label Villa San Juliette. Since then, they have built an incredible hospitality center and of course, private residence quarters, one for Ken and one for Nigel. Reserve Cellar Wine Club Members have the opportunity to enjoy two common areas between the residences. The Veranda, a second level deck connecting Ken and Nigels suites, is a decadent outdoor venue, overlooking the estate vineyard and gently rolling hills of the San Miguel landscape. Wine Club members are welcome to enjoy their tastings daily on the private patio. Another amenity of the private residences is an outdoor pool in the middle of Ken and Nigels separate gardens. Twice per year, club members are invited to the most exclusive pool party in the area. The event sells out quickly, so it is best to get on the Reserve Club List and RSVP to the event as soon as tickets are released! Visiting Villa San Juliette within the next two years will reveal a bit of construction behind the barrel rooms. Their original 5,000 case production facility is expanding into a state of the art estate winery. A completion date is set for 2015 but this harvest, 2013, will be the first for the winery to utilize the new crushpad. During this construction, the tasting room and patio at Villa San Juliette is open to the public. The entire property has a distinct Mediterranean style, reflected in the landscaping and architecture. Ken and Nigel designed a retirement oasis that reminded them of their roots in Europe. As guests head toward the Tasting Room, a path meanders through the outdoor seating area, which extends throughout the front of the property, featuring a colorful fountain, extensive arbor and a majestic oak tree. The Tasting Room entrance welcomes guests through two glass doors and directs straight to the soft C-shaped bar. The tasting menu features a list of almost 10 wines, all available by the taste, glass or bottle. While each wine is delicious, the whites are serious standouts for the warmer summer weather. The Albario is from the renowned Paragon Vineyard in Edna Valley and features subtle floral and spice notes with an elegant texture. The Pinot Gris comes from the estate vineyard and has a wonderful grassy freshness on the palate with a complex and nutty finish. As for the reds, the staff favorite is the Petit Verdot. This variety is normally extremely tannic and dry, used mostly for blending, however, this particular bottling is a softer style, still with firm tannins, but balanced with dark fruits and meatiness. In addition to all the wine, Villa San Juliette serves small plates from their full commercial kitchen daily. The menu varies from cheese and charcuterie boards to house-made deviled eggs. All of the menu items, including wine and food, are discounted for Reserve Cellar Club Members. The tasting room at Villa San Juliette, is open daily from 11:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. To learn more about their weekly music series, monthly dances and other exciting events held at Villa San Juliette visit their website villasanjuliette.com, or their facebook.com/vsjwinery. The oasis in San Miguel is absolutely worth the picturesque drive from Paso Robles.

Perfect Pairs
Nothing says summer like a versatile white wine and pairing these Asian Lettuce Wraps with the 2012 Clautiere Vineyard Estate Viognier will help you beat the heat! This recipe comes just at the right time as I had just picked fresh lettuce from my garden. This dish is easy to prepare and the savory spiced filling was an absolute delight when paired with this Viognier. These wraps are bursting with flavor and are best served family style so everyone can make their own. The 100% Estate Viognier is on the lighter side of Viogniers. Less viscous than most, makes this wine excellent for food pairings as well as just sipping amongst friends. On the nose are aromas of pear, guava, banana, basil and coconut milk. The palate has flavors of peach, grapefruit, soft minerality and apples with a smooth, buttery finish. A very young wine as it was just bottled in May however it will age gracefully if you dont enjoy it all summer! Clautiere Vineyard is dedicated to the production of premium Rhone, Bordeaux and Port style wines and is 100% Estate bottled to ensure the highest quality from grape to glass. The distinctive tasting room at Clautiere Vineyard is known to wine-lovers everywhere as a Paso Robles destination to relax, let your hair down and have a little fun with their wine-tasting experience. The tasting room has vibrant

Avant Tapas & Wine Bar

BY MIChAEL CERVIN

The Santa Ynez Valley is bursting with wine tasting rooms of every conceivable ilk. With 200+ tasting rooms providing a wide array of wines youd think you could find every wine imaginable. Well, not so. Some wineries are so small, so boutique, they dont have their own tasting room. Thats where the Avant tasting space comes in. Located right off Highway 101 in Buellton, Avant Tapas and Wine is virtually everything you need to understand Santa Barbara food and wine under one roof. Part restaurant, part wine tasting room and part winemaking collaborative, its an ideal spot for a full meal, a light snack, a taste of diverse wines or even a full bottle. We offer 52 wines and our guests can choose a taste, a half glass or a full glass, say proprietor Joe Padilla. Many of the wines located on their wine wall which extends the length of the restaurant, are rotated weekly so theres always something new and the majority of all the wines served in Avant are made below the tasting room in the Terravant Wine Company, a custom crush facility, which you can see below you from the second story restaurant window. The wine selection allows you to sample through whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay, to deep reds of Syrah,

Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, to even a few dessert wines. This way you can truly sample a breadth of Santa Barbara Wine Country. But wine needs food and youll find plenty of flavorful choices like applewood smoked baconwrapped figs with goat cheese drizzled with balsamic reduction, to baked brie cranberries with toasted walnuts, to pomegranate lamb skewers with crme fraiche. And the best part is you easily find a wine to pair with whatever food is on your plate. We offer complimentary tours of the facility, winemakers dinners, lots of music nights and other special events, says Padilla a native Californian with over two decades of experience in the wine business. Complimentary tours can be scheduled by calling (805) 686-4742. Special barrel tasting tours are $20 per person. Being a wine producing facility with two dozen wineries sharing the space, winemaking occurs all year but the most action can be seen September through October during harvest and crush. Avant is open daily 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and live music starts at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Avant Tapas and Wine is located at 35 Industrial Way in Buellton, just off Highway 101. Contact them at (805) 686.4742 or www.avantwines.com.

WINEMAKER PROFILE

JOE DAVIS
Arcadian Winery
Joe Davis, the son of a Monterey California fishing family and winemaker at Arcadian Winery, marches to his own beat in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. In crafting his small-lot wines of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, he uses more traditional and Old World methods of winemaking: emphasize the vineyard over winemaking and age wines before releasing them. Emphasizing the vineyard allows the grapes to fully express themselves and their character, which creates something naturally unique in each wine. Davis still uses techniques he learned while at UC Davis, like hand-picking whole cluster fruit and sorting early in the day to ensure chilled fruit. Obviously, not all vintages are the same, the recipe might change, but by using these methods consistently, I impart a common thread among my wines that translates into my style, says Davis. Davis also holds back his releases, giving the wines significant time in the barrel and bottle. At Arcadian, we age our wines three to six years in barrel and bottle before release, something almost no other California winery does. We bear the time and cost of cellaring our wines for years before releasing them for sale so the customer can have a well-balanced, complex, highquality wine to drink, says Davis. To make wine for barrel-aging and bottle-aging, it must be made a certain way, with enough acid, tannin and fruit to achieve the right balance to age well in a bottle. Arcadian sources grapes from colder regions like the Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Lucia Highlands to achieve wines that can be aged, are ready to drink at the time of release and will certainly last another decade. Arcadian Winery tasting room is open Thursday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. Please join them for some great wine, good music and fun times! For more information, call (805) 737-3900 or go to www.arcadianwinery.com.

Quality Craft Beers from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

This family-owned brewery started by Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer of Los Olivos, has been life-long dream in the making. Harnessing their Bavarian heritage the Dietenhofers wanted to create a craft brewery in the Santa Ynez Valley that focused on creating the highest quality beer and help add to a growing hop culture in the Central Coast. Utilizing the skill sets from award-winning head brewer A.J. Stoll and his brew team, Figueroa Mountain Brewing has been able to create a line-up of seven quality craft beers (soon to be more). The brew team has been able to earn multiple medals including three golds in a very short period of time (open since 2010). In addition to selling beer in draft and bottles on the open market, Figueroa Mountain Brewery has a tap room that puts the patrons a few feet away from the brewing action. Complete with a state-of-the-art stainless brewing system, customers can enjoy the pint of beer that was made in the same room and epitomizes freshness. An experience that includes live music on Fridays, and a complete food and wine list. Beer lovers may also enjoy the Fig Mtn Beer truck complete with taps on the side ready to pour. The truck can be seen at a large list of events throughout the Central Coast. Stay tuned to www.figmtnbrew.com for more information, or follow them on Facebook: Figueroa Mountain Brewing for the latest news and updates.

Sort This Out Cellars Going Retro is Always Cool

BY MIChAEL CERVIN

Going retro is always cool; recalling the best of past days and summoning a very present energy. Every winery wants to stand out and for Sort This Out Cellars, even their name tells you this is going to be a different experience. Co-owner Michael Cobb may have set his tasting room in the popular Danish village of Solvang, but this aint no storybook winery. Clearly there is a diversity of wine at Sort This Out, from Merlot to Syrah to Viognier and Cabernet Sauvignon. And the concept is also different in that Cobb does not own vineyards; he instead sources the best fruit from the best vineyards he can find. Sort This Out has created an homage to Las Vegas, a pin-up 1950s

era sensibility which is seen on many of their playful labels. The tasting room is decked out in chrome and red leather, a fun, funky, hip place to be with its low-back shiny chrome bar stools at the tasting counter. In the back room red walls and leather couches make this a comfy hangout. They offer live music Friday and Saturday nights. It has low-back shiny chrome and red bar stools at the tasting counter, and there is a back room as well with red walls and leather couch. Sort This Out Cellars is located at 1636 Copenhagen Drive in Solvang, and theyre open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Bell Street Farm

Bell Street Farm is a distinct eatery and market in the heart of wine country in historic Los Alamos. An ideal destination for residents and visitors alike, the country chic setting offers a warm and inviting atmosphere to enjoy a meal, snack or sample local wines. I work with local artisans, food purveyors, winemakers and farmers to create a distinct dining and retail experience at Bell Street Farm, says Jamie Gluck, owner of Bell Street Farm. The space is an expression of my lifelong passion for fine foods and we use only the freshest ingredients found along the California Coast. Under the creative direction of Mr. Gluck and with Chef Evan Klein, the eatery was designed to reflect elements found from the original 1916 building with a modern charm. Gluck scoured the area to find materials and design elements that would work with the design. He works with local artisans like woodcrafter Richard Motz to create chopping blocks and cheese boards as well as Ramona Clayton of nearby Terrmonary to custom-create all of the ceramic serving dishes used for serving olives, salads and cheeses. Bell Street Farms menu offerings include sandwiches with locally made breads and California cheeses, farm fresh salads with vegetables and greens from local farms, rotisserie Huntsinger free-range chicken, unique salads and house-made cookies, pot de cremes and sweets. All retail offerings are carefully selected to reflect the local area experience and include picnic baskets, aprons and assorted kitchen items, luxurious hand and body products, as well as culinary themed gifts. Bell Street Farm also offers custom designed picnic baskets for groups of two people to 200. Located in the heart of Downtown Los Alamos, Bell Street Farm is just 45 minutes north of Santa Barbara and 75 miles from Paso Robles. Wine Tasting in
Zaca Mesa
BY MIChAEL CERVIN

Zaca Mesa, a loose translation meaning peaceful table, has been a winery of firsts. They were the first winery to plant Syrah in Santa Barbara County in 1978, and the first Central Coast winery to appear in Wine Spectators Top 10 list. Their Syrah was served by President Clinton to French President Jacque Chirac at a White House State Dinner, and also served at President Reagans 80th birthday party at the Beverly Hilton. Thats a pretty impressive history. The focus is squarely on Syrah, but youll also find Chardonnay, Viognier and Roussanne as well as Mouvedre and Grenache. The rustic wood clad tasting room, shaded by old oak trees, is large enough so you dont feel cramped, but small enough to remain intimate. At Zaca Mesa youll get a tasting of seven wines for $10. The tasting flights change every couple of weeks based on availability of the wines so theres always something different and new to sample. You can relax at one of their many picnic tables or challenge your friends to a game of chess on their life-size chessboard. A quick walk on their hiking trail provides extraordinary sights of the Santa Ynez Valley and surrounding farms. Tours and large group tastings are

available, so call in advance for a reservation. Family owned for nearly three decades they are dedicated to the farming of their vineyards and the 2013 crop looks promising. They have been shoot-thinning and removing leaves around the fruitingzone for balanced yields and maximum exposure to the early-morning sun which should lead beautiful fruit once harvest begins in August. Stop in to taste past vintages and get excited about the future ones. They are open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 6905 Foxen Canyon Rd., contact them at (805) 688-9339 ext. 308, or www.zacamesa.com. Rancho Sisquoc

A Gathering Place for Wine Seekers

Rancho Sisquoc Winery is one of the oldest wineries in Santa Barbara County having started growing grapes in 1968 with Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. Today it is still a family owned winery and their 310 acres of vineyards overlooking the Sisquoc River are home to unique micro-climates which allow them to grow diverse varieties such as including, Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and the obscure German grape Sylvaner. To the Chumash Indians who once lived on this land the word Sisquoc meant a gathering place and wine seekers still gather down a long dirt road amid lush green pastures and fruit trees at the winery tasting room, truly getting a feeling of early California. The vineyards are warmer than vineyards in the lower Santa Maria Valley, but Rancho Sisquoc is cooler than the Santa Ynez Valley just 20 miles south due to what is known as the transverse range; coastal mountains which running west-east, not north-south, that bring cool winds and fog inland from the Pacific Ocean, tempering the vines. Winemaker Alec Franks abides by a simple philosophy for the 18,000 cases he makes; create high quality wines in limited

quantities, and offer them at a reasonable price. Tasting fees are $8 for any six wines from their wine list and there are usually a dozen wines to choose from, and a stemless logo glass is included. You can bring a picnic to the beautiful and quiet grounds any time you like. Rancho Sisquoc is truly a throwback to another time. The rustic wood tasting room is located at 6600 Foxen Canyon Rd. near Santa Maria. They are open Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday through Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Contact them at www.ranchosisquoc.com, or (805) 934-4332.

SANTA MARIA VALLEY

Costa de Oro Winery
Costa de Oro, a Spanish term meaning gold coast, reflects their moniker perfectly. They make wine from their 30-acre Gold Coast Vineyard planted mainly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and these wines reflect the best the Central Coast has to offer; almost like gold in a glass. The Costa de Oro tasting room is comfortable and relaxed with its wood-toned colors, wood beams on the ceiling and wood floors. There are comfy chairs to relax in and theres plenty of sunlight cascading through the large windows. The views from the windows look directly out to the fertile cropland of Santa Maria and to the low rolling hills in the distance. In the tasting room there are wines that are either exclusive to the wine club or in very small quantities only available at the tasting room. Currently you can find three versions of Chardonnay, four iterations of Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon and a fun summertime red blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet, Syrah and Petite Sirah. Tasting fees are $10, or you can purchase individual glasses of wine in addition to lots of gift items. Make certain you get a cheese plate to go with your wines, which are available from $5 to $12 containing a variety of cheeses. To make matters even better, Costa de Oro offers live music every Friday evening with their Wine Down Fridays. Each Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. youre likely to hear festive folk music, maybe blues, acoustic guitar solos or a little rock n roll from Grammy winning musicians. My wife and I are musicians and music is near and dear to us, says Gary Burk, the winemaker and owner. Music and wine are both universal languages, they speak to people on an emotional level, no translation necessary. The Friday Wine Downs feature wonderful food from Chef Rick, one of the best chefs in the area. For a mere $12 youll get foods like a club sandwich made with oak grilled chicken, avocado, and apple wood smoked bacon, and broccoli slaw with vinaigrette and summer melons. And all these foods pair well with Garys wines,

especially the Pinot Noirs. We are very excited about our Pinot Noirs, Gary says, and yes hes a little biased since he has a fondness for them over other wines. So get your groove on and check out the exceptional wines of Costa de Oro. The tasting room is open Saturday to Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. They are located at 1331 S. Nicholson Ave. in Santa Maria directly off Highway 101. Cinque Stelle Winery A Rising Star

Stelles comfortable setting and European-chic atmosphere will make you feel right at home. Cinque Stelle Winery and Boutique is located at 2445 Alamo Pintado Avenue, Suite 102 in Los Olivos. They are open Thursdays through Mondays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Call (805) 686-4101 for more information. Visit www.cinquestellewinery.com or for updates on events and special offerings, visit them on Facebook at Cinque Stelle Winery.

Cinque Stelle Winery and Boutique is a rising star on the Santa Ynez Valley winery scene, not only because their name means five stars in Italian. Owned and operated by the Crist family, each star represents a member of the family, and together they create smallproduction wines that reflect a shared passion and attention to quality from the farming to the winemaking process. The Crist family began their journey by purchasing a vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley (off Refugio Road) in 2007, where they grew and sold Albarino, Pinot Grigio, Tempranillo and Syrah to local wineries such as Brander, Longoria and Tensley. Then in 2009 winemaker Matthew Crist had the opportunity to be mentored by local winemakers, which led to the first vintage of Cinque Stelles estateproduced wine. The cooler microclimate and rocky terrain along with hand-farming the entire vineyard, enables the Crist family to produce high-quality fruit that creates varietal wines with unique flavor profiles. Make sure to check out their flagship wine, Albarino, which is a very rare Spanish varietal. When the Crist family decided to open their tasting room in August 2012, Natalie and Barb (daughter and mother) incorporated a lovely womens boutique that features clothing, fine gifts, jewelry and gourmet food items for pairing with their wines. Whether tasting one of their unique wines or browsing for a one-of-a-kind gift, Cinque

LOS OLIVOS
Wine Tasting in
Coquelicot Estate Vineyard
COQUELICOT (ko-klee-ko) is the name en Franais of the striking red poppy flower that graces the French countryside, as well as all the labels on Coquelicot wines. The 58-acre vineyard is an organically farmed property in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. Sustainable farming and gentle, meticulous winemaking techniques converge to produce handmade, limited-production wines that are a true celebration of life. Michael Larner, Coquelicots winemaker, has been a viticulturist in the Santa Ynez Valley, California for the past 15 years. He received a MS degree from the Department of Viticulture & Enology at UC Davis in 2005 and previously earned a BS in geology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has traveled to three continents for wine apprenticeships and has worked for E. Guigal in Ampuis, France (the Rhne Valley), Marchesi Antinori at the Guado al Tasso estate in Bolgheri (coastal Tuscany) and various estates in the Santa Ynez Valley (California) and Australia. Thanks to those international experiences and his language ability (he speaks French and Italian), Michael is often asked to judge at trade fairs and wine competitions. He has done so regularly at Italy's biggest wine competition, the Concorso Enologico Internazionale in Verona, and the California State Wine Expo. Michael is an active member of the Santa Barbara Vintners' Association and is a founding architect of the proposed Ballard AVA (in Santa Barbara) that would distinguish this wine

territory as one of the best in California. Michaels international wine experience contributes to Coquelicots dynamic wine portfolio by fusing old world techniques with modern winemaking expressions. Since Michael believes winemaking starts in the vineyard, a focus on quality crafted estate wines is paramount in all wines produced.

Fun Fact
The Coquelicot tasting room building dates back to 1886 and used to be the local blacksmith shop.

Los Olivos Tasting Room

Consumable Art
BY CAROLYN WOODDALL

Established in 1987, the Los Olivos Tasting Room & Wine Shop was Californias first independent tasting room, specializing in Santa Barbara and Central Coast Pinot Noirs. Located in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley wine country, this beautiful and inviting tasting room is perfectly situated to also feature handcrafted wines produced by smaller, Central Coast winemakers and wineries that do not have their own tasting room or have limited hours. The robust assortment of wines changes constantly, giving tasters the opportunity to experience several new wines each visit. Tastings are only $10 per person, and includes tastings of up to nine wines, including four Pinot Noirs, two white wines, two other select reds and a dessert wine. The sign indicating Consumable Art above the door is an accurate reflection of the artistry that is reflected in each of the wines carried. Visitors will often have the opportunity to taste with owner Chris Benzinger, whose knowledge of wines is incredibly extensive. Whether enjoying it now or looking to age it, regardless of the occasion Benzinger and his staff will be able to help you select the perfect wine. There is also a wine club for those interested in

receiving an assortment of local wines, with several different options to cater to quantity, frequency and price range. The Los Olivos Tasting Room & Wine Shop is located at 2905 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos, and is open every day from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, call (805) 688-7406 or visit www.thelosolivostastingroom.com.

Joseph Blair Wines

Mark Cargasacchi has been making wine since 2004, while he was the oenologist for Fess Parkers winery. After moving on to Rideau Vineyard, demand went far beyond what he could make on the side, so he settled on a spot close to home and started Jalama Wines in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto around four years ago. Mark opened the tasting room for his second label, Joseph Blair Wines, at the beginning of 2012. This second label draws upon some of his estate vineyard wines, but also goes further east to warmer vineyards, sourcing varietals you wont find at Jalama. Joseph Blair Wines produces small lots, with a focus on vineyard designated wines. The individual lots are generally around 100 cases or less, so when you have one of these, youll know it is something special and unique. Current releases include a variety of whites; from Chenin Blanc, to Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay. Reds include estate grown Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon from Santa Ynez Valley and a couple of delicious blends. While tasting here, youll be surrounded by beautiful works from local artists. Our exhibit changes every few months, so be sure to get on our mailing list or stop in often to see what is new. I make what I love, and I am continually inspired by our vineyards, and those we are surrounded by. Such a palate of varietals and terroir that I can't choose to make just one or two. The result is many different local wines, all produced by hand, in small amounts. Thank you for sharing my passion for great wine.

also less, depending on a variety of farming and winemaking practices, and on the varietal and the vineyards location) which will give you 797 gallons of juice (or thirteenand-a-half barrels) which is pretty close to four thousand bottles of wine.

Wine Bar Tasting

The most common tasting experience is a Wine Bar Tasting. You step up to the bar where typically a list of wines being poured is displayed. Expect to pay a tasting fee between $10-$40. Some tasting bars will offer you the option to taste a library or reserve wine. Exercising this option increases the fee, but will allow you to taste very unique, old or rare wines.

Sit Down Tasting

A Sit Down Tasting usually requires an appointment, and there may be a slightly higher fee than a wine bar fee. Seated in an elegant room, you are poured several wines by your winery host. Expect your host to describe the unique characteristics of each wine and how it was made.

Walk Around Tasting

A Walk Around Tasting is a combination of a tour and a tasting. Your host brings along several bottles of wine on your tour, and may take you to a garden area of the winery to pour the first round. Then you move to another place within the winery to sample the next wine. This experience continues until all the wines are tasted.

Barrel Tasting

Another popular tasting experience that can be part of a tour or a Walk Around is a Barrel Tasting. Your guide takes a wine thief, a special siphon placed into a hole in the top of a barrel to extract tasting samples of a maturing wine. The sample allows you to taste what the wine is like in the middle of developing its full potential.

Why make an appointment?

Some wineries are so small that they need to know when you are coming so someone will be there to greet you. Others have sit-down tastings that start and end at specific times. Its always a good idea to schedule your appointments well in advance.
