EDGE Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution is a true global success story, enabling GSM/GPRS operators to deliver 3G-like services. Operators using EDGE can handle 3 times the number of subs compared to GPRS, by increasing the user data rate to almost 300 kbps or adding voice capacity. EDGE uses the same TDMA frame structure, logic channel and carrier bandwidth as GSM, so current cell plans can be used. No new spectrum or core network changes are needed. GSM/EDGE FAST FACTS

EDGE Evolution Evolved GERAN (GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network) i.e. EDGE Evolution, aims to repeat the proven 3 times more subscribers and data traffic gain of original EDGE (3GPP Release 99) with GSM/EDGE carriers. Included in 3GPP Release 7, EDGE Evolution achieves several benefits with low impact on the EDGE network, minimizing the performance gap with HSPA by increasing downlink and uplink speeds, and reducing latency. Dual Carrier was the first step, enabling a doubling of peak downlink speeds to 592 kbps on existing EDGE networks. EGPRS-2, enabling peak speeds up to 1.2 Mbps downlink, and 474 kbps uplink.
