Overview
ThisreportoutlinesthevisionforacommuterraillineconnectingLoganwithOgdenandforarailsystem
connectingthecitiesandtownsofCacheValley.
LoganFrontRunnerExtension
TheFrontRunnerextensiontoLoganwouldbeapproximately60.3milesinlength.Thisraillinewouldbea
northernextensionoftheFrontRunnerlineoperatedbytheUtahTransitAuthority(UTA).Currently
FrontRunnerconnectsOgdenandSaltLakeCity.AnextensionconnectingSaltLakeCityandProvoiscurrently
underconstructionandisexpectedtobecompletedin2013.
Stations
TheFrontRunnerextensionwouldconnecttotheexistinglineattheOgdenstationandwouldincludestationsat
PleasantView,Willard,BrighamCity,Honeyville,CollinstonJunction,CacheJunction,andLogan.Therewould
beconnectionstoafutureCacheValleyRail(CVR)systemattheCacheJunctionandLoganstations,and
connectionstofutureintercityrailroutesatOgden,BrighamCity,CacheJunction,andLogan.
Vehicles
ServiceontheextensionwouldbeprovidedbyrunningFrontRunnertrainsfurthernorthalongthenewline.
ThecurrentFrontRunnertrainsetconsistsofadieselelectriclocomotiveatoneendandacabcoachattheother
endwithadditionalcoachesbetweenthelocomotiveandcabcoachasneeded.Asthelocomotivesarecapable
ofmovinguptotencoaches,thisprovidesforaseatingcapacityrangingfromapproximately130to1,300seats
dependingonhowmanycoachesareinthetrainset.Thetrainsethasanoperatorcabatbothends,eliminating
theneedtoturnaroundthetrainsetattheendofeachrun.ThecurrentFrontRunnertrainsetshaveamaximum
operatingspeedof79mph.
Amenities
AlltrainswillofferthesameamenitiesofferedonthecurrentFrontRunnertrains,whichincludeonboard
restrooms,seatswithheadrests,tablesatsomeseats,120voltpoweroutlets,andwirelessinternet.
Alignment
ThealignmentdescribedinthereportassumesthepurchaseofrightsofwaybelongingtoUnionPacific(UP)
adjacenttoexistingUPtracksbyUTA.Thenewlinewouldbefortheexclusiveuseofpassengertrainsbut
wouldallowfreighttrainsonsectionsofthelinewhenpassengertrainsarenotinoperationinordertoservice
theneedsofindustryalongtheline.Thealignmentwouldbesingletrackwithapassingsidingateachstation
alongwithadditionalsidingsinordertoachievea15minutemaximumfrequencyontheline.
BeginningattheOgdenStation,theraillinewouldutilizetheUPrightofwaytotheeast/southoftheexisting
UPtrackswhichrunfromOgdennorthtoBrighamCity,CacheJunction,andeventuallyPocatello.Itwould
continueinthisrightofwaythroughthePleasantView,Willard,BrighamCity,Honeyville,CollinstonJunction,
andCacheJunctionstations.TheportionoftheraillinefromOgdentoCacheJunctiontotalsapproximately48.4
miles.AfterthestationatCacheJunction,thenewFrontRunnerlinewouldcrossthefutureCVRraillineand
wouldutilizetherightofwaytotheeastofthefutureCVRlineforapproximately4miles.Thenthelinewould
followanabandonedrailroadrightofwayafurther8milesacrosstheCutlerReservoirtoLogan.UTAwould
needtopurchaseandrazesomelightindustrialpropertiesalongthelineasitentersLoganalongwitha
commercialpropertytolocatetheLoganStation.ThesectionoftheraillinebetweenCacheJunctionandLogan
wouldalsobeusedbyintercitypassengertrainstoreachLogan.
Additionally,inordertoachievethedesiredspeedof79mphthroughtheCutlerDamarea,amodifiedrail
alignmentwouldberequired,whichcouldalsoinvolverealigningandupgradingtheadjacentUPtracks.
CacheValleyRail
TheCacheValleyRail(CVR)systemwouldbealoopapproximately78.4milesinlength.TheCVRcouldbe
operatedbyUTAoroperatedbyanewrailauthority.
Stations
TheCVRwouldincludestationsatCacheJunction,Mendon,Wellsville,Hyrum,Nibley,Logan,NorthLogan,
Smithfield,Richmond,Lewiston,Franklin,Preston,Dayton,Weston,Cornish,andTrenton.Therewouldbe
connectionstotheFrontRunnerextensionatCacheJunctionandLogan,andconnectionstofutureintercityrail
routesatCacheJunction,Logan,andDayton.
Vehicles
DuetothebowllikeshapeofCacheValleywhichexperienceswinterinversionsmadeworsebygasolineand
dieselemissions,thelikelyvehiclechoicefortheCVRwouldacatenaryelectricEMU(electricmultipleunit).
EMUsareselfpoweredvehicleshavingatypicalseatingcapacityofapproximately80seats,andvehiclescanbe
coupledtogethertoformalongertrainset.Thetrainsetwouldhaveanoperatorcabatbothends,eliminating
theneedtoturnaroundthetrainsetattheendofeachrunandwouldhaveamaximumoperatingspeedof79
mph.

TheCVRtrainswouldofferamenitiessimilartothoseofferedonFrontRunnertrains,whichincludeonboard

withapassingsidingateachstationalongwithadditionalsidingsinordertoachievea15minutemaximum
frequencyontheline.
BeginningattheCacheJunctionStation,theraillinewouldreplacetheexistingUPrailspurextendingthrough
theMendon,Wellsville,Hyrum,Nibley,Logan,NorthLogan,Smithfield,Richmond,Lewiston,Franklin,and
PrestonStationsandwouldbeparalleledforapproximatelythefirst4milesbythenewFrontRunnerline.After
PrestontheraillinewouldrequireanewrightofwayandbridgeovertheBearRiverinordertoreachthe
DaytonStation.TheCVRwouldneedtopurchaseandrazeapproximately5residentialpropertiesinorderto
extendthenewrightofwaythroughPreston.AfterDaytonthenewraillinewouldutilizetheUPrightofwayto
theeastoftheexistingUPtracksrunningbetweenPocatelloandBrighamCitythroughtheWeston,Cornish,and
TrentonStationstotheCacheJunctionStationandwouldrequireabridgeoverCutlerReservoir.
