Basic Education Name of Country


The basic education in Bhutan is defined as 11 years of education (primary and 4 years of secondary education till class X). Children begin their schooling at the age of 6 when they enter the first grade, known as Pre-Primary Class (PP). At the end of primary cycle, children are required to sit for a national level examination set by the Bhutan Board of Examinations but assessed and administered by the school. In a few years time examination at this level would be replaced by a standardized Test (National Education Assessment). The secondary education program comprises of 4 years of secondary education. The 4 years are either offered at the Middle Secondary Schools (MSS) or two years (classes VII and VIII) at the Lower Secondary Schools (LSS) and remaining 2 yrs at MSS. Students have to appear at the National Examinations at the end of class VIII, X and XII.

Higher Education
Higher or Tertiary education consist of professional and general programmes which are offered at different levels: diploma, degree, taught post-graduate, and by different modes of study, full time, part time, short duration and distance learning provision. Although degrees in Research and PhDs are not offered at the moment, there are plans to offer in the near future. Its faculties offer diplomas and degree courses in science & technology, business studies, traditional medicine, language & culture, education, health sciences, natural resources, and management. Students whose needs are not catered for will study elsewhere abroad.

Special Features
Bhutan had 209 schools altogether, including 22 monastic schools, schools for Tibetan refugees, and six technical schools. There was at the highest-level one junior college, two teacher training colleges, and one degree college which was affiliated to the university at Delhi in India. Many teachers from India are employed in Bhutan.
