FACET Proposal Guidelines for New Experiments

Every experiment at FACET starts with a proposal. Each proposal is for one specific experiment and each proposal is valid for one scheduling cycle only. There is no limit to the number of proposals that can be submitted by a scientist or experiment team. So please consider whether your proposed studies should be submitted separately. If the proposal is part of a multi-stage program, the relationship should be made clear. Proposals are solicited twice per year. A successful proposal can expect to receive FACET beam time within about 12 months after being submitted unless extensive changes to the FACET infrastructure are required. An unsuccessful proposal may be re-submitted, but this will not happen automatically and a resubmission will not receive preference during the review process. Follow-on proposals are also welcome, but are not generated automatically and do not receive preferential review. Proposals are reviewed by the

Experiment versus Test Beam proposals

Test beam proposals are an accepted alternative to experimental proposals. Test beams: Do not require change of the existing beamline installation Do not introduce unusual hazards Do not present any risk to the FACET program Don not require more than a few shifts of beam time.

Test Beam proposals can be submitted at any time. They will be reviewed by FACET Division. The turn-around time for Test Beam proposals is quick; successful proposals can expect beam time within a couple of months. The content for Test Beam proposals should be the same as for the Full Proposal File as described below but the length should be much shorter (2-5 pages should be sufficient).

How to Submit a FACET Proposal
FACET proposal documents are submitted via an email to hogan@slac.stanford.edu. Proposal document files must be in PDF format.

FACET Proposal Composition

A FACET proposal consists primarily of two PDF files: 1. Title/Abstract/Authors/Reviewers File (limit to 2 pages) This file must include the proposal title, the proposal abstract, the names, including spokesperson, affiliations and email address of all participants, and the names of at least three potential reviewers. The abstract should provide a concise summary of the proposed experiment providing a clear picture of the quantities to be measured and the expected scientific results. Proposers need to provide the name and email address of at least three scientists who are particularly familiar with the proposed science and who may be called upon to help review the proposal. They might also name reviewers who might have a conflict of interest. 2. Full Proposal File (limit to 11 pages plus supporting files) This file must contain the complete proposal information, including the following sections: A. Proposal Title and Proposal Abstract (limit to 2 pages) A descriptive title and a concise summary of the proposal, providing a clear picture of the quantities to be measured and the expected scientific results (identical to section 1). B. Table Listing Authors/Experimental Team (limit to 2 pages) In a table, summarize who would participate in each aspect of the proposed experiment and the role of each person including spokesperson. The table columns should include name of each person (last name, first name), their institution, their email address, their position (student, postdoc, staff, professor), their expected role in the experiment (sample prep, theory, data collection, data analysis), and whether they will be coming to SLAC for the experiment. This section of the proposal should also briefly mention directly-relevant previous work done by the team or its members, including previous experiments at FACET, which can be presented in detail in supporting files (see below). C. Scientific Case (limit to 3 pages) This section explains why this experiment is interesting and worth doing. In particular, why is FACET required for this experiment? Please concentrate on the specific experiment and avoid broad discussions in general terms. Characteristics of the FACET beams can be found at the FACET website.

D. Experimental Procedure (limit to 4 pages) Enough specific information should be supplied such that the technical feasibility of this experiment at the requested FACET instrument can be evaluated. Have simulations of the experiment been performed? What are the anticipated data rates? Provide an installation and a beam time plan. If additional equipment will be brought to FACET for the experiment, it should be described in some detail. It is strongly recommended that the FACET experimental scientist be contacted before proposal submission, to identify possible problems in integrating external equipment with the FACET facility and to determine possible solutions. E. List of needed beam requirements Characteristics of the FACET beams can be found at the FACET website. 3. Additional Supporting Files Though not always required, additional files (in PDF format) may be sent along with the proposal. This additional material may include reports from relevant previous studies, such as reports from previous FACET experiments. It could also include technical drawings or descriptions of instrumentation to be brought to FACET.
