Our Termly Newsletter for Parents, Patrons and Supporters

News In Brief
Victoria's own Harry Bassett played to a packed house at the Albert Hall, London in May. Harry was invited by his tutor Colin Francis to join the Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra last year. 1500 students performed and the standard was high with Harry soloing in the Rocky theme. Well done Harry! A massive thanks goes out to all staff involved in organising and putting on this years first annual Summer Fayre, BBQ and parent's evening. As well as the usual parents time catching up with the teachers, lovely hot dogs and burgers were laid on by Stuart with craft stalls plant displays and book sales. The weather was kind to us this year as well. A whopping 450 was raised for our IPad appeal.

Further to this exciting news another chapter in our continued development of our media studies is also very near fruition. Our new media suite complete with state of the art Apple Macs, Apple T.V.s, Hi Def cameras and interactive learning environment will be up and running very shortly. The suite will be housed near the Radio Station creating a media hub where our students can create films, music and programmes. We are also very pleased to announce the launch of the new Victoria Website. Rob Belbin has been

working very hard on this project for some time and has created a brilliantly informative site showing the services we provide throughout the many departments here. There is also a news section providing another portal for current students, staff, parents and prospective students and parents all the information on Victoria they need. You can log on by visiting www.Victoria.poole.sch.uk or alternatively quick scan our QR barcode on page the front page.

Foreword VIBE Is on the air

By Beth Kay
Media Teacher

Wow, this term has been a busy and exciting one in many respects. In May we saw the brand new radio station, VIBE installed and the first official intranet broadcast was on June 26th, launching the Sports Week Grand Prix. In addition to the radio station we have received a state of the art Apple technology Media suite that will be fully operational from September and housed right next to the radio station. Students will be able to create their own films, and music from start to finish in one room. Yet another exciting venture has seen the launch of the new school website, really keeping you in touch with life at Victoria. In this edition you can read more about how each of these projects is unfolding. A pleasurable visit was undertaken by myself, Simon Brown, Jon Godber and Tony Rudd to Westfield Schools radio station, On air to gather some ideas for our Radio. Seeing the growth of On air from intranet Radio to FM station has given us so much inspiration and enabled us to see the potential in VIBE . DJ talent is emerging from all corners of Victoria. Staff and students have laid down the presenting gauntlet, rivalling some of our most famous BBC radio crew! Victorias Inclusive Broadcasting Enterprise is already a hub of creative activity. We are looking for parents, staff and students alike to get involved, so cast aside the hairbrush and come and join in! Following on from the last edition of VEC life

we see the reality of how much our students are able to express and enjoy themselves through the use of new technologies. Music technology has seen some of our students being really successful in sound beam competitions. The latest Apps are explored by OT and we see Post 16 students release their first, digitally edited Science Fiction films . Covering all media platforms you can read about the anticipated launch of a new newspaper for people with learning difficulties. Overwhelming determination and commitment from staff and students have seen The IPadoMeter rise with gusto this term. Weekly events have included; quizzes, an array of culinary treats, beauty treatments, sponsored walks and much, much more (see page 10) In addition to a wealth of Media news we have the regular features you all enjoy so kick back, find a sunny spot and tune into this exciting issue of VEC life. Lorax Pledge Tree Planted

A beautiful Wild Cherry Tree has been planted outside Carmel House. As per our promise to plant a tree as part of the Lorax production, which had a very strong Eco message, and our on-going commitment to our own Eco code, staff and students gathered to participate. The tree was planted in a lovely spot and we look forward to many years of enjoyment. The tree will also help to keep green issues and our responsibilities in mind.

Sports Week 2013

Sports Week 2013 was a run away success again this year with the winning mix of thrills, spills and fun. Our annual wheelchair grand prix took place again with races for drivers and walkers and we were also treated by a visit from spectacular cars. The weather held out for us as ice cream was eaten by the bucketful and the students got to sit behind the wheel of some of the aforementioned cars. Other attractions was a wheelchair race simulator which replicated the harsh realities of long distance wheelchair racing, a street dancing crewe who put on a wonderful display of contemporary dance, a crew of urban acrobats who delighted with some amazing twist and turns and some expert skateboarders who performed tricks. It was an amazing three days which promises to be bigger and better next year

Life in the fast lane: Stuart is impressed.

New Pool Update

Site Manager Steve Plumb was kind enough to show me around the new hydro pool site so I have managed to get some exclusive photos from Pool side up to the roof. The building is progressing well and is bang on target for September with some of the more complex additions about to take place. The Plant room (where all the boilers and Pool plumbing nitty gritty is kept) is actually being assembled and finished off site. When complete, around May 20th the whole kit and caboodle will be transported onsite and slotted into the existing build. This will close off the remaining open parts and give the building a further sense of completion. To move this large room a 100 foot crane is being used. Also evident as you will see in the photos the upper building has started to

be rendered and the roof is undergoing some final work. A highlight for me was the climb up to the viewing gallery where you get a real sense of scale and layout. The old Pool and changing rooms will be demolished over the Summer holidays.

Variety Bring Sunshine To Victoria

A little bit of sunshine came our way in May despite the showers, when a new bus was officially handed over from The Variety Club of Great Britain. Our students mingled with the VIPs and sang the Sunshine Coach Calypso written by Anthony Bygraves son of the late great Max. Anthony himself was at hand and led the singalong. Also attending was School friend and patron Chris Jarvis, Paul Griffiths and Peter Gunn from BH Live, Peter Grantham from Variety, Judy and Bob Hiscock who collected money at this years BIC Panto and counted it all up afterwards, Barry Smith who also collected and Frances Cornelius who is the Chair of the Wessex branch of the Variety Club. The bus is a Fiat Ducato Maxi and will be a great asset to us. Massive thanks to Variety Club and the great work they do and all the brilliant people involved. THANK YOU!!!

A Message From Katie

Following last months article on fashion guru and former Victoria student Katie Farley here is a brief update into what she is up to at the moment. Well I'm now super busy with new fashion writing projects. I am currently writing articles for Blanc magazine which is sold worldwide. I am also doing a 3 month internship as a fashion writer for MyFashionLife.com which is one of the uk's top fashion blog sites where my work is posted daily! On top of all this I am still writing for Do Moredorset and the Echo. It's all gone crazy all of a sudden but great!!!! The hard work I have put in is finally paying off and I am delighted. Never give up on your dreams. My advice - if a door shuts, keep knocking!!!

JK Shines With Soundbeam

Media and Tech Special

Post 16 student Jonathan Kirkpatrick has come runner up in a major Europe wide music competition. The competition was organised by the Soundbeam company to mark their 25th Anniversary. With entries invited from all over Europe JK with the support of Digi Music Wizard Mike Whitlock actually came runners up winning 100 and no limit of prestige. The judging panel included the inventor of the Soundbeam system itself and none other than Led Zeppelin Bass legend John Paul Jones who gave JKs version of Stairway to Heaven the thumbs up. Abi Punchard and Liam Mulligan also competed. Here are the judges' and moderators' comments on some of the pieces submitted: "We applaud Mike Whitlock's evident dedication and dynamism as a Soundbeam teacher/facilitator and there are some fantastic examples of beaming in these films, notably from AbJK Plays Stairway To Heaven bey and Liam, and an enjoyable homage to one of our esteemed judges from Jon Kirkpatrick. Abis mastery of the beam and exuberance in her spired. "Congrats go to Jon, Abi, Liam and Mike playing is impressive, and the idea of using Peter and the Wolf to explore different instruments is in- on this fantastic achievement.

Eco Team Update By Lisa Frett

After the success of the Lorax production we managed to raise 200 for the Woodland Trust who want to see a country rich in native woods and trees enjoyed and valued by everyone and the Soil Association who campaign for healthy, humane and sustainable food, farming and land use. They are also protecting our bees which are currently under threat, so a big thank you to the creative arts team and all that were involved. We also had a visit from Poole Recycling who hopefully cleared up any questions you may have had

about what exactly you can re-cycle! As a result of the visit we managed to get another big re-cycling bin which hopefully with your help will solve our overflowing bin problem. We also have new recycling bins on their way for all classes and departments, so keep up the good work and keep re-cycling responsibly! The Eco Committee have set a few eco challenges for the school, so keep your eyes open for bug hotels and weird and wonderful bird feeders appearing around the school grounds. Every class that takes part will receive an eco award.

Pat said he was so very proud of his Shaftesbury Bible and always shared it with visitors to his home. He was a Surveyor by profession and was also involved with the Gideons ensuring the bible was widely distributed. Derrick very much helped get Victoria where it is today.

Brendan Runs The Park Next Steps 2 activity co-ordinator Brendan Rudland ran the Poole Festival of Running 10k race for Poole Hospital Charity. Poole runners charity this year is the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital. And a special thanks goes to.

Annie Caldwell (Cheer) began as a support worker/classroom assistant in September 1997, and then qualified as a teacher in 2005. She has worked as a full-time and part-time member of staff and her contributions to the development of Drama and Creative Arts within the Centre have been immense. Her lessons are always splashed with humour and plenty of energy and everyone who has worked with her has appreciated her enthusiasm for Drama and her passion to involve and expose our students to performing arts. She has led extremely successful and entertaining whole school productions, many events and projects and secured the achievement of Gold Arts Mark for the school. She hasnt got a firm plan yet, but she is hoping to have a little bit of well-deserved rest time before possibly pursuing a Masters degree. We wish her every success for the future. Janine Williams started with us in 2008 and has been our ICT leader and more recently a class teacher for the past 5 years. As well as supporting the Educational Leadership Team, she has endeavoured to explore new ICT innovations and opportunities for the students and many have been able to achieve qualifications. I know that the students and staff will miss not only her professional contribution but her as a person, always willing to help and support others when needed. We thank Janine for all she has given to the Centre and send her our very best wishes. Giles Northover joined us in November 2008 as an LSA, he completed his teaching certificate in 2012 and has been a class teacher in Post 16 this year. We are extremely grateful for all he has done to support the Education Department over the past 4 years, in particular his work with students in Post 16. Giles takes up a new teaching post overseas at the Village International Educational Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, a special school for students aged 3-19 and we wish him every success. He has assured me he will remain in contact and hopes to develop a link with us once he becomes established in his new role. I am sure that you will join us in thanking Annie, Janine, and Giles for all that they have done for Victoria Education Centre and to wish them all the very best for the future.

And this from Moira Marshall Catherine Van Spall has been part of the nursing team for the last 2 years working both day and night duty and is now leaving us to broaden her nursing skills. Susan Dyer joined the nursing team in Sep 1995 as a night nurse before joining the day team in Jan 2001. Susan has been involved with many fundraising events including sitting in a bath of baked beans, acquiring raffle prizes for the drama productions, supporting the Christmas Fayre by sourcing wonderful prizes for the silent auction. Susan has accompanied students on residential trips to Churchtown and Stoke Mandeville. Last year Susan reduced her working week to 2 days per week and has enjoyed her semi retirement so much that has decide to retire completely at the end of this term. We wish Susan a long and happy retirement.

Your Guide To The Latest Apps With Special Needs In Mind By Rhiannon Beer and Jon Godber

Technology, a word that excites some but also sends others running for cover. It seems at times that its a generation thing, for those over a certain age the internet was something that lined bathing costumes and Ipads soothed tired eyes after a long day bashing away on a type writer. However with the advent of the silver surfers and courses being run specifically for mature users technology is becoming less of a scary word but a word that conjures possibilities, enterprise and communication. As witnessed here at Victoria, technology is a front line tool enabling our students in ways that would have seemed impossible 10 years ago. Our increased use of Ipad and touch screen technology brings interactivity and sensory experiences to all students regardless of their individual special needs. Working within the Victoria assessment team and liaising with colleagues far and wide keeps our focus very much on the present and on the bow wave of new developments in all types of hardware and software. Rhiannon has worked closely with special effects and Goatella an App development company in bringing our students feedback and our own experience through assessment so that future releases will better fit our needs as assessors but more importantly the needs of our students in an educational capacity. Therefore in a new feature for VECLife we will be bringing to you a few of those useful Apps we have come across and think that you would find useful in your day to day. Whether you are a silver surfer or a computer whizz hold tight because the next few years promises to be quite a ride.

Pets @ Victoria Update By Amy Hunt

So whats new for Pets @ Victoria? Its been a busy year for Pets @ Victoria. A tropical fish tank, complete with various different fish, was very kindly donated to the school in the Autumn term. The tank arrived complete with a Ruby Albino Shark, some Gouramis, a few Tetras and a couple of Sucker Fish. They have proved to be a great addition to the play hall with staff and students all stopping to peer into the tank as they move through the play hall. This One and That One, our school rabbits, have continued to be popular with staff and students. They have been involved with LEAP groups and continue to enjoy regular visits from our students at break times and lunch times. Through our Pets @ Victoria LEAP group we have also had visits from some chicken, a trained gun dog, a tortoise and various other guests. Over the last year we have built up a good relationship with Canine Partners. Canine partners is a charity which trains assistance dogs many of which are rehomed through the works of Hounds for Heroes. One of their trainers, Graham Elliott, has become a regular visitor to the school with his current assistance dog in training, Orbit. The idea is that Orbit will get used

He has been to several assemblies as well as break times, wake and shake activities, and the Grand Prix! All of which have been very positive learning experiences for Orbit and for our students. We hope to continue this link with Canine Partners and look forward to seeing Orbit continue to make progress and eventually becoming a fully trained assistance dog.

To meet with Social Workers about the system for Direct Payments. There have been several events held to
address this system for respite.

A working party on Transition. We have held two Transition Road shows to support
parents and young people as they reach their teens and move onto adulthood.

Transition particularly will hold new challenges as the Children and Families Bill 2013 comes into effect from September 2014. Part 3 of the Bill outlines how the law will change for children and young adults with special educational needs in the future. It means that your local Council will in future: Have to draw up an education, health and care plan (EHC) instead of a statement of special educational needs for children and young adults 0-25 years. Publish a local offer of services it expects to be available for all children and young adults with SEN. Need to plan, buy in, and work closely with health budgets when arranging services for children and young adults with SEN. Have to give a personal budget to children and young adults with an EHC plan if asked to do so by the parent or the young adult. We shall try to keep you updated on all these changes but also ask for your input on what YOU would like the school to help with or provide. We are putting a PPG post it in your new school planner to fill in and return so that we can act on your responses. Hoping you have a lovely Summer Break

Residential Round-up

Reflections On Another Year

As we approach another summer, it is the sad time of year when we say goodbye and good luck to our students who are moving on to further education or new ventures. It has a been an exciting, but busy term, lots of end of year activities are planned as we approach the summer break. We have been busy planning the summer holiday programme and hope all the young people will enjoy their stay with us. We sadly lost our very popular Happy Feet Club as Rachel left to have a baby, Art Club will be taking a new direction from September and Faith Club as always has been full of celebrations, singing, signing and lots of fun, I know Hazel has lots of exciting plans for Faith Club in September. We say good bye to some Residential staff who are leaving to travel the globe Rebecca and Jordon have been an integral part of the residential staff team, we will miss them, but hope they have a fantastic trip. Vicky will leave in the summer to have a baby, our best wishes go to Vicky and her family. As always, please contact me if you need to discuss any issues with me regarding your son/ daughter. Wishing you all a fantastic summer break, lets hope for sunshine . Once again, Good luck to the guys who are moving on, we will miss you all, please keep in touch, as we love to hear how you are getting on in your new ventures.

One Hot Summer Evening..

One hot summer evening, the school grounds were invaded by hippies! The Residential students chose to celebrate Summer with a Solstice Party, and everyone had an amazing time. There were Sounds of the Sixties, courtesy of Mikes technological know-how, and live music from Aaron, with accompanying vocals from many students. We ate barbecue food, and strawberries and cream, and all enjoyed the lovely setting and environment were in every day but dont often stop to appreciate!

Durlston students have had a busy term growing tomatoes from seed, entertaining guests on Guest Night, and enjoying the warmer, lighter evenings outside when were able to. We love every opportunity to express ourselves, sometimes singing, usually vocally. We have an extensive range of communication skills in our repertoire. Staff can often feel they are having a crash course in becoming multi-lingual, as they may be in a room with all of us communicating differently at one time some through facial gesture or body language, some vocalizing, some through eye-gazing! Its a bit like simultaneously deciphering four dialect codes! But our smiles of delight when the staff translate us correctly are the reason they keep coming back for more! If you think you are good at cracking codes, dont apply to join the MI5, just crack the code here! (We thank Kaines family for letting us use the photo of the much -missed star)

Brownsea Unit
By Marcia Savage

This has been a busy term so here are some of our highlights. Lauren and Liam took their exams and were relieved when they were over. All Brownsea students enjoyed the summer solstice party and BBQ especially dressing up as hippies. Liam was not sure about the music though!!Scott has enjoyed playing football and going for walks in the school grounds and chilling with the boys on the PlayStation. Ben has enjoyed all the after school clubs especially music club with Mike, and had a

good time one evening bowling at Bowlplex with James. James has spent time chilling, socialising and listening to music in the evenings. Lauren is looking forward to the summer masquerade ball as she has her ball gown all ready for the occasion. Leaving us this half term is Lauren and James we wish them both every happiness in their new ventures.

The Purbeck Report

By Jordan Ballett Lauren Cooks up a storm

Purbeck is very sad to announce that we are losing 2 of our students this year. Joe is leaving us to go on to Star college we will miss his very happy excitable personality. Hafiz has been with us for 6 years and he will be sadly leaving us to go on to college we will miss him very much. Therefore Purbeck are in the middle of arranging an end of year trip for all staff and students to enjoy a day out. We are very happy to announce that Ray has performed in his first ever stand-up (sit down) comedy show He did brilliantly and

Residential Faith Group

had a great response so is looking into his second gig. George and Stuart are planning a summer holiday to our cabin at Rockley Park with some of Purbeck staff. Our students really loved the summer solstice party, we enjoyed a BBQ dinner and music by Aaron which the students were very keen to get involved in everyone looked the part and the whole evening was a great success! Well done Hazel you did a great job in planning this. All students are looking forward to the prom and dressing up smartly in suits and ties.

By Hazel Noyon

The Residential Faith Group continues to be enjoyed by its regulars! This term the themes weve explored have ranged through water, May Day traditions, good manners and politeness to angels, Buddha Day and National School Grounds week. There is much student participation singing and signing, sharing experiences and ideas, and regularly thinking of someone or something to say thank you for. A constant feature of Faith Group is to sing Gods

got the whole world in His hands, allowing time for every student present to say a name. We use pre-recorded speech buttons, communication books and a dynavox, as well as voices however quiet, and it is a very special time when students experience the support of all in the room. We keep trying to expand our repertoire of songs, but the same songs get requested week after week!

Drama and Creative Arts at VEC

Curtain Call By Annie

Well Its been a busy and successful year again in the drama department so time to reflect on a few achievements. Seen But Seldom Heard, our performance poetry project in collaboration with Bournemouth University, goes from strength to strength, gathering interest and making waves. I am delighted to say that we have funding to continue the project next year. The Lorax, our school production was a great success and we were so pleased to be able to work with Jen Williams and the schools eco committee on this one to bring awareness of our environment and the need to look after it. Thanks to all who helped us with this project and those who came to watch and support the students who were performing. Money raised was donated to the Woodlands Trust and the schools ipad appeal. Qualification Congratulations! Collaborating with Belinda in dance and music, Class EC have successfully gained their Discover Arts Award certificates, exploring their creativity through the theme of Monsters. In class JWi Michael Dooley gained a Discover arts award certificate and the rest have all gained their Level 1 Bronze Arts Award this year by completing The Shakespeare Challenge. Well done to Harry Bassett who passed his LAMDA Level 1 Grade 3 Solo Acting exam. Post 16 Successs What a year its been for our Post 16 creative arts students. Two students passed their Level 1

The Final Curtain Well, all thats left for me personally to say, is a fond farewell to you all! I am leaving VEC at the end of the term and will be handing over the mantle to Nicky Hewitt who will do a fantastic job continuing to develop drama in the school when she comes back from maternity leave. In the meantime, good luck to Laura Eastwood who will cover while she is on leave. I wish the amazing creative arts team, Belinda, Mike ,Aaron, Nicky and Kirsten, (our wonderful new creative arts technician), every happiness and success creating more exciting opportunities in drama, dance and music for our talented students. I very much look forward to supporting them and the students in the future, this time as an audience member. My last word must go to the students. I have been so lucky to watch so many of them grow and develop into wonderful, confident young adults who have really taught me far more than I could ever hope to teach them. I thank them for that, and will always carry the brilliant memories of our times together, very close to my heart. Bye Bye for now. Annie ( Drama Teacher at VEC 2006-2013)

Alex Takes on an Olympian

On 10th May we took Alex and JK to the Nationals in Sheffield, it was a long journey but the competition was at a very high standard. Alex had only 3 games in the 2 days. She played really well and qualified for the Quarter Finals. Her opponent was Zoe Robinson, the Paralympic team bronze medallist. Alex played good attacking boccia but unfortunately Zoe was on top of her game and beat Alex by only 7 balls. JK had lots of games in his group so he played 5 games in the 2 days. Unfortunately he didnt get out of his group but he played the best boccia that we have seen him play.
Boccia star Alex in action.

Exeter Crew Perform

On the 15th May we took Connor, Jacob, Hugo, Hafiz, Tom, Scott, Sophie, Kieran, Stuart, Archie, Zoe, Charlie and Dan to the Regional Athletics competition in Exeter. There was lot of different events for track and field. It was a great experience for the students that have never been before. They all learnt new skills and competed at a high level. The weather wasnt good but we didnt let that dampen our spirits when they were competing. The athletes that qualified will go on to the National Athletics in Blackpool in July.

Hugo competes in the long jump.

Victoria hit opposition for six

A team that qualified from the Dorset school competition travelled to the Table Cricket Regional competition in Taunton on the 3rd May. There was a lot of tough competition that didnt make it easy for our team to qualify. They played 4 games and did really well working as a team and giving each other support. They won the Regionals so they will be representing South West in the Table Cricket National in July which is held at Lords Cricket Ground. Good Luck!

National Boccia Finals

Alex, Ebony, Oliver and Alisha who qualified for the under 19 team Boccia in Exeter last February travelled to Sheffield for the Boccia National Finals. The competition was tough but they played well as a team. Overall they came 11th in the whole country and they also competed in a Boccia challenge match and they won the trophy. They all enjoyed themselves and cant wait to compete next year.

Gold and Silver at Canford Gala

This year the swimming gala was held at Canford School. The students we took were Torin, Kieran, Daniel, Evie, Luke, Hugo, Connor, Amar, Ebony, Harry, Charley and Sophie. It was a long day any all the students did so well. We came 2 nd overall and our most successful swimmer was Hugo who won 1 gold and 2 silvers! The first trip we had this summer term was the Silver Duke of Edinburgh which took place on Brownsea Island at the end of June. We took Hafiz, Lauren, Hugo, Robbie, Michelle and Evie. The expedition was 2 night and 3 days. They had to Kayak from Lake Pier in Hamworthy around the island in Poole harbour to Brownsea Island. When on the island they did orienteering and made the group meals. All of the students worked well as a team and had an amazing time on the island. At the end of the next week we were off to London for the Table Cricket Finals at Lords Cricket Ground. We took a big team this year. Ray was the coach and the team was JK, Liam, Lauren, Robert, George, Dan, Connor, Alex. They all played amazing and the all the teams didnt know what hit them. Their field was perfect and they played like they really wanted it. They got into the final and played amazing and won by a big score. Well done!! The next trip was the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh which took place in the New forest. We took Liam, Ray, Alex, Charley, Lauren, Dave and Spencer. It was 2 days and 1 night, so on the first day they did a hike around the new forest navigating their way to the campsite. In the evening they cooked their dinner and washed up. The last day the weather was very hot so they did a short hike and then came back to school. As a group they helped each other out and work together they all enjoyed themselves. On the same week we had the National Athletic in Blackpool. It was a very hot weekend. We took Hugo, Connor, Alex, Kieran, Archie and Nathan, they all competed in field and track events. They brought us back 11 medals from gold to bronze. They all enjoyed competing and did really well in their events.

Body Language

VECLife Summer 2013

Performance and Dance at VEC. With Belinda Ellicott

This term we say goodbye to some of our ballet club members who have been with us for a few years. So we would like to say how much we will miss them and thank them for all their hard work. Ballet club is held once a week and is open to any student in the school whatever age or ability and is a fantastic way of stretching and increasing body movement and control. We asked our current members what they enjoyed most about ballet club. Abbie G I love exercising and my favourite exercise in ballet club is saut (jumps). I especially enjoy working by myself and remembering all the movements. Joanne S I really enjoy the trips we go on to see different ballets. My favourite was when we went to see English National Ballet at the Mayflower in Southampton and they danced Romeo and Juliet. My favourite exercise in ballet club is saut (jumps) too. George R I love the exercises especially battement frappe (knocking) and the arm position bras bas. I also really enjoy the trips and my favourite one was also to Romeo and Juliet although I really liked the trip to the Lighthouse to watch Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Joe S I love the arm position 5th and really enjoy exercising by myself without any help. Stuart B I really enjoy the leg stretches and can get my leg really high without any help. Hafiz H I love the saut exercise too it is my favourite and I love going to see all the different shows. Ballet club will commence at the end of September on a Wednesday evening after school, letters will be sent out in the new school term.

The Music Report

A very busy year has been had by the music team with all sorts of activities and achievements to remember and celebrate. The first class led Harvest Festival showcased wonderful ideas and talents from all students. The Christmas Carol concert with live music from all over the school, visits by amazing musicians and instruments as part of Creative Arts Week and the arrival of some new instruments including a fabulous harp, an accordion and the new Soundbeam 5. Students have also been receiving peripatetic music lessons in trumpet, violin and keyboard from Dorset Music Service and Harry Bassett was invited to join Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra and has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and Swanage Jazz Festival. The introduction of resonance board sessions run by Hazel has been very successful to the extent that 4 classes will soon be taking delivery of their very own resonance board to use in classroom sessions as well as in their individual music sessions. Staff have been learning guitar led by Jon and now have a 4 song repertoire including Country Road and Brown Eyed Girl and Zara and Eddie have been running a successful staff gospel choir. We have had mini djs, karaoke, GLEAP, classical chill outs and sensory sing-alongs at lunchtime and afterschool music theory club run by Catrin and Aaron has expanded to include more students and levels. This term we have introduced access to Sing Up for all classes to sign up to and get singing in preparation for our project with English Touring Opera in September. There have been trips and recording sessions at Absolute Music, a performance by Abi Punchard for the Bishop of Bath and Wells, creation of music for the school production, a festival organised by the events management course run by Aaron and success in the international Soundbeam competition led by Mike. Huge thanks to all staff and students for their support and embracing music and all that has been offered this year, we cant wait until September! Unfortunately at this time of year we lose some of our fabulous team as Catrin and David head off to SCITT training, we wish them both well and hope that they will come back and see us. We also wish students heading off to pastures new every success especially Lauren Taylor who takes her considerable singing talent off to ACMR in September, watch out for a future star.

Explorers Explore Sealife
By Gill Tuttiett

Holly enjoys the Sun and water!

On July 11th Explorers headed off to Weymouth Sea Life Centre, driven there and back by two wonderful drivers Amy and Terry. We had fun looking at the Penguins, Seals, Turtles, Sharks, Sting rays and many other fish. The highlight of our visit was seeing who could get the wettest in the water jets in the play area, this helping to keep us all cool!! Thanks must go to Stuart for the lovely packed lunch he provided for us.

The children had fun choosing something from the shop to remind them of their visit. Each was given a gold medal for taking part in the Nemo Trail. Only thing is, we want to go back again!

ACOs IPad Walk

By Angus Collins

On the 6th of June Class ACo went on a sponsored walk to raise money for the iPad appeal. We went from Boscombe Pier to Sandbanks beach. It was a very hot day and there was no shade. It took over 3 hours to complete the walk, with a stop for lunch. So far we have raised over 1,000. It was tiring and hot, but we are glad we did it.

MC Beside the Seaside

By Maria Caluori

To complete our water topic for this term, we went to Alum Chine beach for a sensory adventure! The students enjoyed paddling in the sea, rolling around in the sand, having an outdoor picnic, and taking in the sights, sounds and smells at the beach. A fabulous day was had by all!

Wonderland, Water Fun and Whoas!

Class JW By Sally Thornley

In June Class JW went to Adventure Wonderland where fun was had by all. Janice from speech and Team Leader Amy also joined us to help with lifting and having fun. It was a beautifully sunny day when the wonderfully wonderful Gary dropped us off and the children could not wait to get aboard the rides. Honey and Amabel were eased into it with the Caterpillar- a ride so gentle it nearly stopped but it certainly looked fast enough for our two more experienced park goers who were having just as much fun as the girls were, and why not?

Dennis (thanks again Dennis) and some elbow grease from our marvellous class (thanks guys), the cars came up sparkling and we had some very pleased customers indeed. Other funraisers have been cake and ice cream selling plus our deliciously timed strawberries and cream in Sports/Wimbledon Week. May we say a massive thank you to all those that have supported us with this, especially the escorts from the minibuses who always give us a smile and who have been more than happy to show their backing for our good cause. One of our great achievements over the past couple of months (apart from winning Golden Goggles!) is a personal accomplishment from someone in class. A big congratulations goes to Tyler who succeeded in getting on and riding a horse at The Fortune Riding Centre. He was greatly encouraged by Jo and Kelly in several unusual ways here at school and then again by all Class JW at the centre, including instructor Claire Creasey. Tyler has ridden Pepe, one of the older horses but has already been promoted to Sonny who he now rides with a quiet confidence. He has shown that he can overcome a couple of difficulties to become an enthusiastic boy who now really looks forward to going riding. Well done Tyler!

Not long after I found another member of staff having far too much enjoyment. Although the Pirate Ship looked fun to begin with it swung a little higher than expected (didnt it Amy?!) Still good job Amabel was there to reassure you. George enjoyed the Pirate Ship and the Tea Cups but seemed to take more of a liking to Pets Corner. As I approached I wasnt sure who the Beware sign was meant for but Georges face soon gave it away. The Billy goats, sheep and Spot the pony sure took a liking to our studentsand why not? Well you cant go to the amazing Adventure Wonderland without meeting the famous White Rabbit. Amar, George and Jacob were among the privileged few although I think he was a bit bigger than Jacob expected -but he was still pleasantly amused. And just look! Yet another member of staff enjoying themselves! Quick someone call the Fun Police now! Keeping in with the water topic for this term was one of Class JWs iPad funraisers, a car wash that turned into a bit of a child wash by the time they were finished. The children worked extremely hard and absolutely no fun was had at all (cough cough) as seen here. The cars were pretty dirty (werent they Belinda?) but with some hose power from

If We Ran The School

By Class CN

In Class CN we read several humorous list poems. Then we had a go at writing one ourselves. Here is the result. Can you guess who contributed each idea?

If we kids ran the school instead of you, Here are some of the things wed do. Everyone would learn to drive an F1 car. Wed open a night club with an all-night bar. Eat chocolate flavour pizza with choc chips on the top, Sausages and marmite and lots of fizzy pop. There would be no adults, no lessons, no gates and no doors, Mrs Nelms, our teacher, will be cleaning the floors. NH All At Sea
By Debbie Calcutt

Well have toilets like the Tardis and a jungle outside, Celebrities to teach us and a rollercoaster ride. A pop group, the Wurzles, will jam in soft play, The kids will wear football kit or pyjamas all day. Well do sport in the classroom and arcade games for free, Start school at midday and finish by three. Wed love to come to a school such as this. It would be heaven, wonderful, bliss.

Class NH went to the Bournemouth Oceanarium to learn about animals that live in the water. We saw lots of fish but also otters, an Iguana, giant turtles, sharks and lobsters. We all really enjoyed looking at the fish and other animals. We also learnt lots from our tour guide Duncan.

GNs term report

By Giles Northover

Under the Sea! NH survey the wonders.

Over the past term class Post 16 GN have taken part in a wide range of activities such as completing units for their Personal Social Development and Life Skills qualifications through to a trip out round Poole harbour on the Dolphin Boat during the hugely successful Sports Week, with a Duke of Edinburgh expedition for some and a range of Life Skills trips chucked in for good measure, it has been a busy term! A highlight for the group was the Work Experience week where most of the students attend Holton Lee. The only exception was Holly who helped in Horticulture, making hand scrubs from scratch, and also undertook a range of administrative

tasks! Those who attended Holton Lee worked alongside the wonderful team of conservationists and learnt a wide range of skills from countryside preservation and wildlife management through to more practical, and fun! challenges such as horticulture and even building a fire sculpture! It has been a fantastic term and as we begin to ready ourselves for a wonderful summer we would like to wish our leavers, James, Joe, Hafiz and Robbie the best of luck in the future! Have a wonderful summer from everybody in class GN.

MHs Brush With Spiders

By Margaret Humphreys

One of class MHs favourite songs during Speech and Language Therapy is Theres a spider on the floor. The students make up their own verses indicating if the spider is on my head or has moved up my nose. Chelsea loves the song so much she comes up with suggestions for everyone. Imagine our shock when Chelsea took off her shoe this

week to reveal an enormous arachnid clinging to her sock. Staff bravely flicked it away and checked to make sure Chelsea still had all her toes. We are now going to conduct an experiment to see if our other songs start coming true. We are planning to start with Five currant buns and I like a nice cup of tea in the morning.

Adventures in Science
By Harry Bassett

Throughout this term, Class JWI has been looking at the environment. We have looked at many different things such as: Bug & Insect habitats and how areas could be improved. So far, we have managed to identify different species and have made a Hedgehog box, Bug Boxes, Bird Feeders and even Bird Cakes! We are also making sure we use our recycling box and are not wasting electricity. So there you go, Class JWI are now going green!

Class BK School Report

By Hugo Lucas-Rowe

As we all know it has been a busy term and the entire school has been taking on and completing all kinds of projects and tasks this year. Recent news is that the schools radio station has just taken off, allowing many of the students to do their work experience in the radio studio; the radio has been named Vibe and broadcasts during break times and sometimes lesson times. Some of the students from class BK have also recently taken their Media exams which has involved them creating their own science fiction movie trailers and creating their own magazines! Some of you may be thinking well how could they of possibly made these trailers? Well all we know it involved some cameras, computers, props, music and a bunch of staff dressing up for the occasion. Predictions have it that most of the Media students are aiming for a C or even a B grade! In other news categories the Bournemouth University poetry project (The Seen but Seldom Heard Project) has taken off once again in new heights. The leaders of the project Johnny Fluffy Punk and Liv Tore have been mentoring some of

the students in the project and trying to help them write a poetry piece that sums up them and their feelings on disability and how the world views them. The students from Victoria school took part in their very last poetry performance with the Seen but Seldom heard Project at Lulworth village hall, the two mentors Johnny and Liv said that they were proud of how far the students had come with their poetry skills and look forward to taking part in a performance at the lighthouse in Poole. Many of our students are also leaving this year to progress to new hobbies, ways and things they will one day teach others. The older students of Victoria have been planning an end of school prom which will take place in the sports hall two weeks from now. It is sad to see them go but we hope that they will move on to better things and hopefully be able to teach some of us what they have learnt afterwards. This year has indeed been a big one, one which surely will be remembered with moments here and there and pretty much everywhere. The staff and students of Victoria school are looking forward to the new year

Our Hospital Work Experience

By Janine Williams and Class

We were lucky enough to spend four days at Poole Hospital, exploring the different departments that contribute to the smooth running of the place. We were looked after by Carol and Alison, who kept us busy at all times. Here are some reactions from the students.. Michael - This was the Prosthetics department. I was surprised to see what they could come up with. Abi - This is my class mates in Prosthetics. I held an eye and in this department they make artificial body parts. I found it really interesting. Ben - This is me visiting the Prosthetics department. They make body parts for people who have had cancer or serious accidents. In the photo I am holding an artificial eye. Alex - I liked the Catering department because they put different food in different areas and they have a timetable every day for each ward. Ebony - All the food was separated into vegetables and meat. I liked seeing how much food they needed to make meals for the whole of the hospital.

Charley - This is me on the switchboard listening to the phone calls from all around the hospital. I loved it - it was such fun and the lady was really nice who worked with me. Its amazing how many phone calls they get a day. Harry - My favourite part of the week was the Switchboard Centre. I liked it because it was a very busy department and they took in many calls from various places, both internally and externally! I found the week very interesting and useful because, before visiting the hospital, I didnt know much about what happens to keep the hospital running and how important some of the departments are. Tom - This is me in the Clinical Laboratories. We had to wear white coats before we entered the lab. I was shown how to test the blood. Charles - We watched a machine testing blood. This is me putting blood in the machine. The blood was in little tubes.
