Victoria's own Harry Bassett played to a packed house at the Albert Hall, London in May. Harry was invited by his tutor Colin Francis to join the Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra last year. 1500 students performed and the standard was high with Harry soloing in the Rocky theme. Well done Harry! A massive thanks goes out to all staff involved in organising and putting on this years first annual Summer Fayre, BBQ and parent's evening. As well as the usual parents time catching up with the teachers, lovely hot dogs and burgers were laid on by Stuart with craft stalls plant displays and book sales. The weather was kind to us this year as well. A whopping 450 was raised for our IPad appeal.

Further to this exciting news another chapter in our continued development of our media studies is also very near fruition. Our new media suite complete with state of the art Apple Macs, Apple T.V.s, Hi Def cameras and interactive learning environment will be up and running very shortly. The suite will be housed near the Radio Station creating a media hub where our students can create films, music and programmes. We are also very pleased to announce the launch of the new Victoria Website. Rob Belbin has been
working very hard on this project for some time and has created a brilliantly informative site showing the services we provide throughout the many departments here. There is also a news section providing another portal for current students, staff, parents and prospective students and parents all the information on Victoria they need. Wow, this term has been a busy and exciting one in many respects. In May we saw the brand new radio station, VIBE installed and the first official intranet broadcast was on June 26th, launching the Sports Week Grand Prix. In addition to the radio station we have received a state of the art Apple technology Media suite that will be fully operational from September and housed right next to the radio station. Students will be able to create their own films, and music from start to finish in one room. Yet another exciting venture has seen the launch of the new school website, really keeping you in touch with life at Victoria. In this edition you can read more about how each of these projects is unfolding. A pleasurable visit was undertaken by myself, Simon Brown, Jon Godber and Tony Rudd to Westfield Schools radio station, On air to gather some ideas for our Radio. Seeing the growth of On air from intranet Radio to FM station has given us so much inspiration and enabled us to see the potential in VIBE . DJ talent is emerging from all corners of Victoria. Staff and students have laid down the presenting gauntlet, rivalling some of our most famous BBC radio crew! Victorias Inclusive Broadcasting Enterprise is already a hub of creative activity. We are looking for parents, staff and students alike to get involved, so cast aside the hairbrush and come and join in! Following on from the last edition of VEC life
we see the reality of how much our students are able to express and enjoy themselves through the use of new technologies. Music technology has seen some of our students being really successful in sound beam competitions. The latest Apps are explored by OT and we see Post 16 students release their first, digitally edited Science Fiction films . Covering all media platforms you can read about the anticipated launch of a new newspaper for people with learning difficulties. Overwhelming determination and commitment from staff and students have seen The IPadoMeter rise with gusto this term. Weekly events have included; quizzes, an array of culinary treats, beauty treatments, sponsored walks and much, much more (see page 10) In addition to a wealth of Media news we have the regular features you all enjoy so kick back, find a sunny spot and tune into this exciting issue of VEC life. Sports Week 2013 was a run away success again this year with the winning mix of thrills, spills and fun. Our annual wheelchair grand prix took place again with races for drivers and walkers and we were also treated by a visit from spectacular cars. The weather held out for us as ice cream was eaten by the bucketful and the students got to sit behind the wheel of some of the aforementioned cars. Other attractions was a wheelchair race simulator which replicated the harsh realities of long distance wheelchair racing, a street dancing crewe who put on a wonderful display of contemporary dance, a crew of urban acrobats who delighted with some amazing twist and turns and some expert skateboarders who performed tricks. It was an amazing three days which promises to be bigger and better next year
be rendered and the roof is undergoing some final work. A highlight for me was the climb up to the viewing gallery where you get a real sense of scale and layout. The old Pool and changing rooms will be demolished over the Summer holidays.

We also have new recycling bins on their way for all classes and departments, so keep up the good work and keep re-cycling responsibly! The Eco Committee have set a few eco challenges for the school, so keep your eyes open for bug hotels and weird and wonderful bird feeders appearing around the school grounds. Apps Amazing!
Your Guide To The Latest Apps With Special Needs In Mind By Rhiannon Beer and Jon Godber
Technology, a word that excites some but also sends others running for cover. It seems at times that its a generation thing, for those over a certain age the internet was something that lined bathing costumes and Ipads soothed tired eyes after a long day bashing away on a type writer. However with the advent of the silver surfers and courses being run specifically for mature users technology is becoming less of a scary word but a word that conjures possibilities, enterprise and communication. As witnessed here at Victoria, technology is a front line tool enabling our students in ways that would have seemed impossible 10 years ago. Our increased use of Ipad and touch screen technology brings interactivity and sensory experiences to all students regardless of their individual special needs. Working within the Victoria assessment team and liaising with colleagues far and wide keeps our focus very much on the present and on the bow wave of new developments in all types of hardware and software. Rhiannon has worked closely with special effects and Goatella an App development company in bringing our students feedback and our own experience through assessment so that future releases will better fit our needs as assessors but more importantly the needs of our students in an educational capacity. Therefore in a new feature for VECLife we will be bringing to you a few of those useful Apps we have come across and think that you would find useful in your day to day. Whether you are a silver surfer or a computer whizz hold tight because the next few years promises to be quite a ride.

He has been to several assemblies as well as break times, wake and shake activities, and the Grand Prix! All of which have been very positive learning experiences for Orbit and for our students. We hope to continue this link with Canine Partners and look forward to seeing Orbit continue to make progress and eventually becoming a fully trained assistance dog.

A working party on Transition. We have held two Transition Road shows to support
parents and young people as they reach their teens and move onto adulthood.
Transition particularly will hold new challenges as the Children and Families Bill 2013 comes into effect from September 2014. Part 3 of the Bill outlines how the law will change for children and young adults with special educational needs in the future. It means that your local Council will in future: Have to draw up an education, health and care plan (EHC) instead of a statement of special educational needs for children and young adults 0-25 years. Publish a local offer of services it expects to be available for all children and young adults with SEN. Need to plan, buy in, and work closely with health budgets when arranging services for children and young adults with SEN. Have to give a personal budget to children and young adults with an EHC plan if asked to do so by the parent or the young adult. We shall try to keep you updated on all these changes but also ask for your input on what YOU would like the school to help with or provide. We are putting a PPG post it in your new school planner to fill in and return so that we can act on your responses. Hoping you have a lovely Summer Break

Residential Round-up
With Sharon Nix
One hot summer evening, the school grounds were invaded by hippies! The Residential students chose to celebrate Summer with a Solstice Party, and everyone had an amazing time. There were Sounds of the Sixties, courtesy of Mikes technological know-how, and live music from Aaron, with accompanying vocals from many students. We ate barbecue food, and strawberries and cream, and all enjoyed the lovely setting and environment were in every day but dont often stop to appreciate!

Sandbanks News
By Ewelina Jankowska
Its a funny time on Sanbanks! Were all really happy that the sun has finally turned up and that its not long till the summer holidays. But sad at the same time as were having to say goodbye to 5 of our students! Jagdev Rathur, George Roberts and 3 very long timers David Young, Evie Boyle and Jon Kirkpatrick as theyre all moving on to pastures new. We wish them all the luck for the future at their new colleges and well miss you all. Please see photos of the famous 5.
Durlston students have had a busy term growing tomatoes from seed, entertaining guests on Guest Night, and enjoying the warmer, lighter evenings outside when were able to. We love every opportunity to express ourselves, sometimes singing, usually vocally. We have an extensive range of communication skills in our repertoire. Staff can often feel they are having a crash course in becoming multi-lingual, as they may be in a room with all of us communicating differently at one time some through facial gesture or body language, some vocalizing, some through eye-gazing! Its a bit like simultaneously deciphering four dialect codes! But our smiles of delight when the staff translate us correctly are the reason they keep coming back for more! If you think you are good at cracking codes, dont apply to join the MI5, just crack the code here! (We thank Kaines family for letting us use the photo of the much -missed star)

Brownsea Unit
By Marcia Savage
This has been a busy term so here are some of our highlights. Lauren and Liam took their exams and were relieved when they were over. All Brownsea students enjoyed the summer solstice party and BBQ especially dressing up as hippies. Liam was not sure about the music though!!Scott has enjoyed playing football and going for walks in the school grounds and chilling with the boys on the PlayStation. Ben has enjoyed all the after school clubs especially music club with Mike, and had a
good time one evening bowling at Bowlplex with James. James has spent time chilling, socialising and listening to music in the evenings. Lauren is looking forward to the summer masquerade ball as she has her ball gown all ready for the occasion. Leaving us this half term is Lauren and James we wish them both every happiness in their new ventures.
Purbeck is very sad to announce that we are losing 2 of our students this year. Joe is leaving us to go on to Star college we will miss his very happy excitable personality. We are very happy to announce that Ray has performed in his first ever stand-up (sit down) comedy show He did brilliantly and

Well done Hazel you did a great job in planning this. All students are looking forward to the prom and dressing up smartly in suits and ties.

The Residential Faith Group continues to be enjoyed by its regulars! This term the themes weve explored have ranged through water, May Day traditions, good manners and politeness to angels, Buddha Day and National School Grounds week. There is much student participation singing and signing, sharing experiences and ideas, and regularly thinking of someone or something to say thank you for. A constant feature of Faith Group is to sing Gods
got the whole world in His hands, allowing time for every student present to say a name. We use pre-recorded speech buttons, communication books and a dynavox, as well as voices however quiet, and it is a very special time when students experience the support of all in the room. We keep trying to expand our repertoire of songs, but the same songs get requested week after week!

Well Its been a busy and successful year again in the drama department so time to reflect on a few achievements. Seen But Seldom Heard, our performance poetry project in collaboration with Bournemouth University, goes from strength to strength, gathering interest and making waves. I am delighted to say that we have funding to continue the project next year. The Lorax, our school production was a great success and we were so pleased to be able to work with Jen Williams and the schools eco committee on this one to bring awareness of our environment and the need to look after it. Thanks to all who helped us with this project and those who came to watch and support the students who were performing. Money raised was donated to the Woodlands Trust and the schools ipad appeal. In the meantime, good luck to Laura Eastwood who will cover while she is on leave. I wish the amazing creative arts team, Belinda, Mike ,Aaron, Nicky and Kirsten, (our wonderful new creative arts technician), every happiness and success creating more exciting opportunities in drama, dance and music for our talented students. I have been so lucky to watch so many of them grow and develop into wonderful, confident young adults who have really taught me far more than I could ever hope to teach them. I thank them for that, and will always carry the brilliant memories of our times together, very close to my heart. Bye Bye for now. Annie ( Drama Teacher at VEC 2006-2013)

Body Language
This term we say goodbye to some of our ballet club members who have been with us for a few years. So we would like to say how much we will miss them and thank them for all their hard work. Ballet club is held once a week and is open to any student in the school whatever age or ability and is a fantastic way of stretching and increasing body movement and control. We asked our current members what they enjoyed most about ballet club. Abbie G I love exercising and my favourite exercise in ballet club is saut (jumps). I especially enjoy working by myself and remembering all the movements. Joanne S I really enjoy the trips we go on to see different ballets. My favourite was when we went to see English National Ballet at the Mayflower in Southampton and they danced Romeo and Juliet. My favourite exercise in ballet club is saut (jumps) too. George R I love the exercises especially battement frappe (knocking) and the arm position bras bas. I also really enjoy the trips and my favourite one was also to Romeo and Juliet although I really liked the trip to the Lighthouse to watch Birmingham Royal Ballet.
Joe S I love the arm position 5th and really enjoy exercising by myself without any help. Stuart B I really enjoy the leg stretches and can get my leg really high without any help. Hafiz H I love the saut exercise too it is my favourite and I love going to see all the different shows. Ballet club will commence at the end of September on a Wednesday evening after school, letters will be sent out in the new school term.

On July 11th Explorers headed off to Weymouth Sea Life Centre, driven there and back by two wonderful drivers Amy and Terry. We had fun looking at the Penguins, Seals, Turtles, Sharks, Sting rays and many other fish. The highlight of our visit was seeing who could get the wettest in the water jets in the play area, this helping to keep us all cool!! Thanks must go to Stuart for the lovely packed lunch he provided for us.
The children had fun choosing something from the shop to remind them of their visit. Each was given a gold medal for taking part in the Nemo Trail. Only thing is, we want to go back again!
On the 6th of June Class ACo went on a sponsored walk to raise money for the iPad appeal. We went from Boscombe Pier to Sandbanks beach. It was a very hot day and there was no shade. It took over 3 hours to complete the walk, with a stop for lunch. So far we have raised over 1,000. It was tiring and hot, but we are glad we did it.
To complete our water topic for this term, we went to Alum Chine beach for a sensory adventure! The students enjoyed paddling in the sea, rolling around in the sand, having an outdoor picnic, and taking in the sights, sounds and smells at the beach. A fabulous day was had by all!

In June Class JW went to Adventure Wonderland where fun was had by all. Janice from speech and Team Leader Amy also joined us to help with lifting and having fun. It was a beautifully sunny day when the wonderfully wonderful Gary dropped us off and the children could not wait to get aboard the rides. Honey and Amabel were eased into it with the Caterpillar- a ride so gentle it nearly stopped but it certainly looked fast enough for our two more experienced park goers who were having just as much fun as the girls were, and why not?
Dennis (thanks again Dennis) and some elbow grease from our marvellous class (thanks guys), the cars came up sparkling and we had some very pleased customers indeed. Other funraisers have been cake and ice cream selling plus our deliciously timed strawberries and cream in Sports/Wimbledon Week. May we say a massive thank you to all those that have supported us with this, especially the escorts from the minibuses who always give us a smile and who have been more than happy to show their backing for our good cause. One of our great achievements over the past couple of months (apart from winning Golden Goggles!) is a personal accomplishment from someone in class. A big congratulations goes to Tyler who succeeded in getting on and riding a horse at The Fortune Riding Centre. He was greatly encouraged by Jo and Kelly in several unusual ways here at school and then again by all Class JW at the centre, including instructor Claire Creasey. Tyler has ridden Pepe, one of the older horses but has already been promoted to Sonny who he now rides with a quiet confidence. He has shown that he can overcome a couple of difficulties to become an enthusiastic boy who now really looks forward to going riding. Well done Tyler!
Not long after I found another member of staff having far too much enjoyment. Although the Pirate Ship looked fun to begin with it swung a little higher than expected (didnt it Amy?!) Still good job Amabel was there to reassure you. George enjoyed the Pirate Ship and the Tea Cups but seemed to take more of a liking to Pets Corner. As I approached I wasnt sure who the Beware sign was meant for but Georges face soon gave it away. The Billy goats, sheep and Spot the pony sure took a liking to our studentsand why not? Well you cant go to the amazing Adventure Wonderland without meeting the famous White Rabbit. Amar, George and Jacob were among the privileged few although I think he was a bit bigger than Jacob expected -but he was still pleasantly amused. And just look! Yet another member of staff enjoying themselves! Quick someone call the Fun Police now! Keeping in with the water topic for this term was one of Class JWs iPad funraisers, a car wash that turned into a bit of a child wash by the time they were finished. The children worked extremely hard and absolutely no fun was had at all (cough cough) as seen here. The cars were pretty dirty (werent they Belinda?) but with some hose power from

In Class CN we read several humorous list poems. Then we had a go at writing one ourselves. Here is the result. Can you guess who contributed each idea?
If we kids ran the school instead of you, Here are some of the things wed do. Everyone would learn to drive an F1 car. Wed open a night club with an all-night bar. Eat chocolate flavour pizza with choc chips on the top, Sausages and marmite and lots of fizzy pop. There would be no adults, no lessons, no gates and no doors, Mrs Nelms, our teacher, will be cleaning the floors. NH All At Sea

Well have toilets like the Tardis and a jungle outside, Celebrities to teach us and a rollercoaster ride. A pop group, the Wurzles, will jam in soft play, The kids will wear football kit or pyjamas all day. Well do sport in the classroom and arcade games for free, Start school at midday and finish by three. Wed love to come to a school such as this. It would be heaven, wonderful, bliss.
Class NH went to the Bournemouth Oceanarium to learn about animals that live in the water. We saw lots of fish but also otters, an Iguana, giant turtles, sharks and lobsters. We all really enjoyed looking at the fish and other animals. We also learnt lots from our tour guide Duncan.
Over the past term class Post 16 GN have taken part in a wide range of activities such as completing units for their Personal Social Development and Life Skills qualifications through to a trip out round Poole harbour on the Dolphin Boat during the hugely successful Sports Week, with a Duke of Edinburgh expedition for some and a range of Life Skills trips chucked in for good measure, it has been a busy term! A highlight for the group was the Work Experience week where most of the students attend Holton Lee. The only exception was Holly who helped in Horticulture, making hand scrubs from scratch, and also undertook a range of administrative
tasks! Those who attended Holton Lee worked alongside the wonderful team of conservationists and learnt a wide range of skills from countryside preservation and wildlife management through to more practical, and fun! challenges such as horticulture and even building a fire sculpture! It has been a fantastic term and as we begin to ready ourselves for a wonderful summer we would like to wish our leavers, James, Joe, Hafiz and Robbie the best of luck in the future! Have a wonderful summer from everybody in class GN.

One of class MHs favourite songs during Speech and Language Therapy is Theres a spider on the floor. The students make up their own verses indicating if the spider is on my head or has moved up my nose. Chelsea loves the song so much she comes up with suggestions for everyone. Imagine our shock when Chelsea took off her shoe this
week to reveal an enormous arachnid clinging to her sock. Staff bravely flicked it away and checked to make sure Chelsea still had all her toes. We are now going to conduct an experiment to see if our other songs start coming true. We are planning to start with Five currant buns and I like a nice cup of tea in the morning.

Throughout this term, Class JWI has been looking at the environment. We have looked at many different things such as: Bug & Insect habitats and how areas could be improved. So far, we have managed to identify different species and have made a Hedgehog box, Bug Boxes, Bird Feeders and even Bird Cakes! We are also making sure we use our recycling box and are not wasting electricity. So there you go, Class JWI are now going green!
As we all know it has been a busy term and the entire school has been taking on and completing all kinds of projects and tasks this year. Recent news is that the schools radio station has just taken off, allowing many of the students to do their work experience in the radio studio; the radio has been named Vibe and broadcasts during break times and sometimes lesson times. Some of the students from class BK have also recently taken their Media exams which has involved them creating their own science fiction movie trailers and creating their own magazines! Some of you may be thinking well how could they of possibly made these trailers? Well all we know it involved some cameras, computers, props, music and a bunch of staff dressing up for the occasion. Predictions have it that most of the Media students are aiming for a C or even a B grade! In other news categories the Bournemouth University poetry project (The Seen but Seldom Heard Project) has taken off once again in new heights. The leaders of the project Johnny Fluffy Punk and Liv Tore have been mentoring some of
the students in the project and trying to help them write a poetry piece that sums up them and their feelings on disability and how the world views them. The students from Victoria school took part in their very last poetry performance with the Seen but Seldom heard Project at Lulworth village hall, the two mentors Johnny and Liv said that they were proud of how far the students had come with their poetry skills and look forward to taking part in a performance at the lighthouse in Poole. Many of our students are also leaving this year to progress to new hobbies, ways and things they will one day teach others. The older students of Victoria have been planning an end of school prom which will take place in the sports hall two weeks from now. It is sad to see them go but we hope that they will move on to better things and hopefully be able to teach some of us what they have learnt afterwards. This year has indeed been a big one, one which surely will be remembered with moments here and there and pretty much everywhere. The staff and students of Victoria school are looking forward to the new year

ClassPT have been working very hard this term but fortunately Sports Week gave us the opportunity to go out on the Dolphin boat in Poole Harbour for a well-earned break. Most of the group also had 4 days work experience at Adventure Wonderland in June.

We were lucky enough to spend four days at Poole Hospital, exploring the different departments that contribute to the smooth running of the place. We were looked after by Carol and Alison, who kept us busy at all times. Here are some reactions from the students.. Michael - This was the Prosthetics department. I was surprised to see what they could come up with. Abi - This is my class mates in Prosthetics. I held an eye and in this department they make artificial body parts. I found it really interesting. Ben - This is me visiting the Prosthetics department. They make body parts for people who have had cancer or serious accidents. In the photo I am holding an artificial eye. Alex - I liked the Catering department because they put different food in different areas and they have a timetable every day for each ward. Ebony - All the food was separated into vegetables and meat. I liked seeing how much food they needed to make meals for the whole of the hospital.
Charley - This is me on the switchboard listening to the phone calls from all around the hospital. I loved it - it was such fun and the lady was really nice who worked with me. Its amazing how many phone calls they get a day. Harry - My favourite part of the week was the Switchboard Centre. I liked it because it was a very busy department and they took in many calls from various places, both internally and externally! I found the week very interesting and useful because, before visiting the hospital, I didnt know much about what happens to keep the hospital running and how important some of the departments are. Tom - This is me in the Clinical Laboratories. We had to wear white coats before we entered the lab. I was shown how to test the blood. Charles - We watched a machine testing blood. This is me putting blood in the machine. The blood was in little tubes.
