From a small company in 1954, URC managed to be a multi- national company at present, dominating different industries such as food and beverages, telecommunication and airlines. URC started from producing cornstarch and glucose. After several years,, it expanded its operations producing diversified products such as Blend 45, Nips, Pretzel, Piattos, Maxx and many more. It also ventured into flour and sugar milling. In 1996, it started operating an airline. I also dominated the telecommunications industry introducing Sun Cellular. One of the factors that perhaps contributed to the success of the company is its clear goal. Gokongkwei visualizes URC to be a Filipino brand dominating the global market. To achieve this goal, the company makes use of different strategies such as serving its clients with high quality but affordable products and expanding its operations from food and beverage to airline and telecommunications.

Some of our neighboring countries brands have invaded the global market. Samsung for Korea, Sony for Japan, Cherry for China and Singapore airlines and telecommunications company.

Gokongwei believes that Philippines can compete globally with its large population and through creating our very own global brand . He believes that if Filipinos will be patronizing their own local brands, it is not impossible for these products to be known around the world.

Likewise, John Gokongwei believes that Filipino entrepreneurs have the ability to really stride to globalize their brands. All he wants to say is that this is just a matter of courage for all Filipinos out there to really show what theyve got with regard to competing globally our own products. The hindrance for the Philippines inability to have its own global brand could be the colonial mentality that Filipino people have. They tend to patronize the foreign products thinking that it is much better in quality than that of the Filipinos.

According to his speech at the 20th Ad Congress last Nov. 2007, when he wanted something, the best person that he depend on was his self. hardwork - which is proven by where he is now today and what he had accomplished. Through the acquisition, substantial benefits had been given to the consumers because of the combined consumer-base strengths of Sun and PLDT. Likewise, we can perceive that they can create a more capable telecommunications company which will provide a higher quality and more affordable services to a wide range of consumers.

Moreover, PLDT has able to maintain and capitalize the Sun Cellulars operations and significant brand equity that will continue serving specific market especially those who prefer unlimited type of services. We do agree on other entrepreneurs who mentioned that the apothegm that says "if you can't beat them, join them" must have been the driving force that led the Sun Cellular to sell their stocks to PLDT.

The group believes that PLDTs acquisition of Sun Cellular is a good strategic move not only for PLDT but for Sun Cellular as well. Before the acquisition, Sun Cellulars signal was not that good in some areas in the country. The company believes that with the acquisition of PLDT, the company will be able to increase its sales and there will be improvements with the service they offer since PLDT is the largest telecommunication company in the country and it has a wider coverage than Sun Cell. Though, the signal improved, the low call and text service rates remained. Even after the acquisition, Sun Cellulars name also remained as it is.
