The Salesian community at Don Bosco Mission, Pavunjur takes care of the pastoral needs of the people through the Holy Family parish of Pavunjur with all its substations. It is also engaged in educational services to the poor children of the locality through the St. Joseph High School and the two R.C. Primary schools in Pavunjur and Nelvoypalam. The community has been reaching out to the poor and deserving students from the neighbourhood through the evening study centres in various places. This parish mission was offered to the Salesian Province of Chennai by the Diocese of Chenglepet on a contract for 30 years in 2009.

i. Pastoral Ministry: Holy Family Church: The Parish comprises of 230 registered Catholic families, with 9 sub-stations. The Parish has altogether 13 anbiams.

Total number of registered Catholic families: 230 Nature of the parish population: Mostly lower middle class and quite a number of poor families. Total number of anbiams: 13 anbiams Sub-stations: 9 (2 substations have chapels)

Altar Boys and Girls: We have more than 14 altar boys from both Pavunjur and Palayam. At present, altar girls have stopped serving at the altar. Once in two months, they are instructed and animated in their respective villages. Youth: The youth group consists of 24 members from Pavunjur alone. The youth group they take up in the organization of the feasts and girls take part in the church singing.

ii. Education Mission: a). St. Josephs High School St. Josephs High School provides good education in Tamil medium, to the poor and deserving students of the locality through the dedicated service of the Salesians and lay staff.

Aim / Primary activities Games & Competitions

The boarding caters to the boys residing around Pavunjur. There are only 8 students both Christians and Hindus, from faraway places residing in the boarding. The students are looked after by a lay warden.

Spiritual Animation: Daily Eucharistic celebration, devotion to M.H.C (24th), morning and night prayers, good nights, Commemoration of Don Bosco, etc. iii. Neighbourhood ministries: The community in response to the various needs of the poor, reaches out to many villages through various social upliftment initiatives. Some of them are:
a). Evening Study Centres

The community is involved in organizing evening study center for the very deserving children in the neighbouring villages. The lay teachers help out in taking care of these centres. Every Saturday value based sessions are conducted.

Self Help Groups:

About 15 self-help groups are functioning in 6 villages. There are also many groups which function independently with the help of secular organizations. These groups are functioning quite well except in Pavunjur. They are very much interested in doing something in order to earn a living. Thurumbar community is also involved in the SHGs. c). Thurumbar Ministry:

Through the assistance from the province houses are built for the poorest and deserving beneficiaries. Two years back with the help of the province 3 cents of (purambokku) land were bought and little huts were built for five families in one village. Since these people dont have patta for their land, initiatives have been undertaken to help them get patta through government schemes. Province has also helped two other families for building concrete houses.

Three persons from this community have been employed in our school this year. For time being this group is not active because the president of this group Mr.Mudiappan is sick and has gone to Pondicherry for treatment.

Religious Sisters: The Holy Family sisters in the main parish and the SMA sisters in the sub-substation in Nelvoypalayam collaborate well with the Salesian community through school ministry and pastoral ministry especially helping out in the church activities. The community offers chaplaincy once a week to the SMA Sisters.
