TO THE 2ND NEWSLETTER OF THIS VERY BUSY YEAR!
Hello my friends,
Care for Africa has continued its upward momentum with much encouraging growth and sustainability. Nearing the end of another financial year, I can happily say that we have grown from strength to strength. The financial donations, goods in kind and volunteer time given to Care for Africa continues to overwhelm and reinforce the generosity and support we have in both our local and national communities. This is particularly pleasing as so many of us are now embracing financially challenging times in this current economic environment. I am absolutely delighted to announce that Care for Africa has been successful in obtaining an Aus Aid grant of A$52,000.00 which gives us both Federal government money and credibility. This also reinforces all the excellent work we are doing. It now enables us to install two much needed water wells in October this year. One well will be placed in the Mtana community and the other one in Kiterere, both areas in dire need of safe, clean water. Abdallah Obedi (Care for Africa Tanzanian Co-ordinator) has just returned from Dar es Salaam with the Title Deeds for our block of land in the Bomani Area in Tarime Town, where our Resource Centre is currently being constructed. The application process has been a lengthy one. This procedure began with the registration of The Peter Hewitt Care for Africa Foundation Inc. as a non-government organisation, followed by the registration of the Trustee Body and finally to receiving the title deeds for our land. All this now means that we are proud owners of land and a resource centre. Thank you everyone for your ongoing support and help. Together we ARE making a positive difference! Health
Health Clinics
The 2013 Rural Health Clinics are starting to take shape with two volunteer teams confirmed to spend time in our Tarime communities this October December. Many thanks to all those who expressed interest in volunteering with Care for Africa. The huge interest is heart-warming and it is great to see so many keen to give up their time and offer their skills in Tarime. Our team of volunteer doctors, nurses, paramedics, and medical students will work alongside Tanzanian health professionals to conduct clinics in our 6 community schools. The 25 volunteers are currently undertaking fundraising activities in their local communities to raise awareness of our cause and provide much needed funds to buy medication and cover treatment costs for the children we see. Additionally, an exciting health program is being developed to address the basic hygiene and sanitation necessities to prevent re-infection with intestinal worms following treatment in the clinics. Rafiki Missions
Three Tarime children attended the most recent Rafiki surgical mission in April to have treatment for their burns and congenital deformities. Mary, a 10 year old girl with debilitating scar contractures, underwent her second operation to release her contractures. We look forward to catching up with on our return to her home in the Mtana community.

Teaching activities at the University of Tasmania


A successful one-day workshop was recently conducted at the Hobart Clinical School with medical students from the University of Tasmania. Care for Africa volunteers presented their experiences in Tarime to introduce students to the concept of effective international aid and development. Through a series of lectures and workshops, students were challenged to design international aid projects, work through the steps of developing a NGO and find ways around the challenges of working in resource-poor settings. We were pleased to see so many young minds and future leaders actively engaged in international health. Thank you to student group IMPACT for organising this event and to the School of Medicine for their support. IMPACT, a global health society for UTAS health students, would like to say thank you for your inspiring passion and commitment to helping, and making a true difference to the lives of people in Tarime, Tanzania. On 3rd May, Diana Butler kindly came down to Hobart to give an inspirational talk sharing the Care for Africa Journey and instilling confidence within the students attending the lecture that they too can make a difference! We were touched by her humbling and significant. On 19th May, Diana, Orla and Selena came to Hobart to deliver a successful public health workshop encouraging students to start thinking about the practicalities, the challenges and planning involved in not only identifying key issues within a community, but also creating a sustainable form of aid like the CFA model. We are grateful for their willingness to share their expertise. Our students found it a great opportunity to become empowered and aware of how to make their dreams a reality. Thank you Care for Africa. IMPACT and its members are humbled by your stories and truly grateful for your genuine desire to help individual students achieve their dreams in global health. We are planning a social fundraising event on 3rd August to help fund your much needed mobile health clinic service. Education
Having recently returned from South Africa where I was privileged to speak at an Africa Education Excellence conference. It is pleasing to report that we are on the right path, that of financing teacher training, resources supply and our new focus of providing for the 1 to 6 year olds while encouraging their young mothers to return to their studies through programmes run in our Resource Centre. While it is recognised that this is a big ask, we remain convinced that these projects are vital to the people we serve in the Tarime district. The formation of a genuine education team composed of volunteers who consider the project worthy of the enormous efforts that it will require, has brought fresh impetus and enthusiasm. We are still on the look out for help from a librarian as we prepare for setting up the Resource Centre in October. 2014 Educational Shipping Container

Donations
Singer 201Ks for Tarime

Join Wendy and her girls for this fun / food evening as they prepare, fill and ship their container. They will unpack it and distribute much-needed resources to our community schools.

It is just over 12 months since delivering my last batch of 6 Singer 201K sewing machines to Diana for shipment to Tarime. http://blog.careforafrica.org.au/786/ Since that time I have managed to accumulate a further 14 machines most of which have been assessed/cleaned and serviced by Bill Powell in Hobart prior to conversion to hand-crank. These were delivered to the Care for Africa container on Thursday 20th June. Subsequently Ive moved within Tasmania and having located a copy of the service manual for Singer 201K machines, Im now undertaking the assessment/disassembly/cleaning and service (a learning process) myself. Ill continue to scour the state for suitable machines (Ive already located several for the next container), to prepare! At a later date I may even venture to Tarime to follow-up on the machines and service them! Rodger Willows
