College of Law Visiting Professor tackles international commercial law


De La Salle University is hosting this July a series of seminars
on common law governing commercial contracts and business transactions in the global market with DLSU College of Laws first Visiting Professor, Atty. Lee Mason. Atty. Mason, deputy director of Juris Doctor program of the University of Hong Kong, is the author of the current leading text on Hong Kong Contract Law. A Barrister, he was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2005. He is also a Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) accredited mediator, and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Last July 19, he delivered a lecture on Protecting consumers from unfair contract term: current law and suggestions for reform at the 14th floor of the Henry His research interests include Law of Obligations, Trusts, Succession, Auctions, and Consumer Protection. Atty. Mason has taught a wide-range of subjects, including Contract Law, Tort Law, and Legal System and Negotiation. Since 2007, Lee has been lecturing, predominantly on Contract Law, at the Faculty of Law in the University of Hong Kong. Sy, Sr. Hall. On July 26, he will again give a lecture entitled, An equitable remedy for the defective recording of commercial contracts: a common law approach. The campus will be open for this free seminar on July 30 at the Br. Andrew Gonzalez Hall, where he will talk about Business transactions governed by common law: selected remedies for contractual problems.

CIMA Global Business Challenge regional champion


De La Salle University was hailed as champion in the regional final round of the 2013 Chartered Institute
of Management Accountants (CIMA) Global Business Challenge held at Century Park Hotel Manila last June 21. The University was represented by Raphael Luis Camposagrado (IV-BSA), Mark Andrew Chiu (IV-BSA), Troy James Palanca (V-AE-BSA), and Ira Gayll Zamudio (V-ECM-BSA). Only seven out of 37 participating schools nationwide made it as finalists, including DLSU and De La Salle-Lipa. This is the Universitys second championship in the regional CIMA competition in the Philippines, and first time to represent globally. The DLSU team was also conferred the special award Best Video is published bi-weekly by the Office for Strategic Communications (AH-21F, intercom 144). Editorial deadline is 3 p.m. Tuesdays. Coached by Accountancy Department faculty member Florenz Tugas, the current DLSU team will represent the Philippines in the forthcoming CIMA Global Business Challenge World Championship to be held in

Johannesburg, South Africa on August 28 to 29. They will compete against 24 countries across the globe. The event is an international business competition designed for students to showcase their talent in business management and for the industry to discover young business leaders. It was organized in partnership with Barclays, Philippine Duplicators Inc., and the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

DLSU liberal arts programs named as Centers of Excellence

Engineering programs receive PAASCU Level 4 status

2401 (twente fr,o, wun) is a landmark number along Taft Avenue. It is the location ID of De La Salle University, home to outstanding faculty and students, and birthplace of luminaries in business, public service, education, the arts, and science. And 2401 is the name of the official newsletter of DLSU, featuring developments and stories of interest about the University.

The Commission on Higher Education has identified two more programs in De La Salle University
College of Liberal Arts as Centers of

Excellence. The Filipino and Literature programs were both given the distinction of Center of Excellence through CHED Memorandum Order No. 08,

DLSU liberal arts programs, from page 1 series of 2013. Late last year, the commission also cited the Psychology and Political Science programs as a Center of Excellence and Center of Development, respectively. CHED awards Center of Excellence and Center of Development to public and private higher education institutions that have exhibited world-class teaching, extension, and research standards in particular disciplines. Identified centers may avail of financial assistance from the commission to further improve and develop their academic programs in terms of student scholarships, faculty development, and instructional materials development, to name a few. We are honored to receive these added centers of excellence from CHED, and we express our gratitude to the faculty, staff, and other personnel who made this possible, said CLA Dean Dr. Julio Teehankee. Being given such distinctions is a testament to the universitys vision of having world-class liberal arts programs. Before the start of this school year, the commission handed out the plaques of recognition to the designated centers: Dr. Dinah Roma Sianturi, Literature; Dr. Josefina Mangahis, Filipino; Dr. Ma. Divina Gracia Roldan, Political Science; Dr. Roseann Tan-Mansukhani, Psychology; and Dr. Aime Guarino, Counseling and Educational Psychology were all present during the event to represent their respective departments. According to the memorandum orders, the designation of the five DLSU programs as Centers of Excellence and Development are valid until May 31, 2014.

New book sheds light on Blumentritts scholastic work


Last July 3, the DLSU Publishing House hosted the book launch of Ferdinand Blumentritt and the Philippines: Insights and Lessons
for Contemporary Philippine StudiesbyDLSU Full Professor Dr. Feorillo Petronilo Demeterio III at the European Documentation Centre of The Learning Commons. The Austrian Blumentritt is considered as the closest foreign friend of the Philippine national hero Jose Rizal. During the launch, Ambassador of Austria to the Philippines His Excellency Wilhelm Donko expressed his gratitude to the author and the University for their activities and contributions in keeping the memory of the Austrian scholar alive in the Philippines. In his book, Demeterio provides an in-depth analysis of the evolution of Blumentritts scholastic work on different aspects of the Philippines through a study of a selection of his writings currently available in the country. He presents information on major influences on Blumentritts work, including Rizal, as well as how Blumentritts approach to his subject matter changed throughout the various periods of his life. Demeterio also points out crucial lessons that contemporary Philippine Studies scholars may glean from Blumentritts scholasticism and writings.

DLSU Engineering programs receive PAASCU Level 4 status


The University recently received notification from the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP) that the Philippine
Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) has granted Level 4 status to the Chemical and Mechanical Engineering programs of the Gokongwei College of Engineering. Level 4 accreditation status is given to institutions that have distinguished themselves in a broad area of academic disciplines and enjoy prestige and authority comparable to that of international universities. The benefits of this accreditation level include full administrative deregulation, financial deregulation in terms of setting tuition and other fees, full curricular deregulation, grants or subsidies from CHEDs Higher Education Development Fund (HEDF), and grant of charter or full autonomy.

Future Leaders Summit finalists announced


Two DLSU students were among 90 student delegates selected
to take part in the 8th Aboitiz Future Leaders Business Summit on August 16-17, 2013 at Marco Polo Plaza in Cebu City. They are Kahlil Marion Carmona (III-BS Applied Economics & BS Management of Financial Institutions), and Raissa Lizette Ventura (V-BS Mechanical Engineering, Since 2006, the event has gathered participants who are working scholars, varsity athletes, honor students, and leaders in their respective organizations for an opportunity to interact, network, and establish ties with executives and leaders of the Aboitiz Group. The Summit with concentration in Mechatronics Engineering). will have plenary discussions, team building exercises, and team challenges to equip participants with skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen fields. Top Aboitiz executives will present themes relevant to management and leadership, corporate values, and what goes on in the corporate world in general. The summit will culminate in a presentation reflective of the participants learnings.

IE faculty leads workshop discussions on industrial ecology

participated in the 7th International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) Biennial Conference last June 25-28 in Ulsan, Korea. During the conference, Chiu was session chair in one technical paper session and he led two workshop discussions on Sustainable Consumption and With the conference theme, Industrial Ecology: Strategy for Green Economy", the biennial conference gathered leading academics and practitioners from around the world to discuss green economy as an important policy goal by industrialized and industrializing nations. of the Green Growth as well as the Industrial Engineerings role in production under the context of green growth.
