A student is required to select any advanced topic relevant to any of the subjects during the semester for seminar. Student is required to give internal presentations on his/her topic during the semester. He/She will prepare seminar report & will defend his/her work before the examiners at the time of final evaluation.

In the first part of dissertation, a student is required to decide his/her final topic for dissertation, scope of work, action plan for various stages of dissertation part I & Part II. A student is required to prepare and submit a report on dissertation part I. The dissertation report for part I shall include: Brief literature review Scope of work Action plan for part I & part II Industrial visits Dissertation work done so far

Dissertation Part I shall be reviewed by the review committee at the end of the semester.

Topics Power Sector in India: Introduction to various institutions in Indian Power sector such as CEA, Planning Commissions, PGCIL, PFC, Ministry of Power, State and central governments, REC, Utilities and their roles. Critical issues / challenges before the Indian power sector, Salient features of Electricity act 2003,Grid code. Restructuring of Electricity Supply Company: Deregulation, Reconfiguring Power systems, Unbundling of electric utilities, Background to deregulation and the current situation around the world, Benefits from a competitive electricity market, After-effects of deregulation, Implementation of deregulation in India and its proposed structure. Electricity Market Environment: Role of the independent system operator, Operational planning activities of ISO: ISO in Pool markets, ISO in bilateral markets, Operational planning activities of a GENCO: Genco in Pool and Bilateral markets, Market participation issues, Competitive bidding. Transmission Open Access, Planning and Pricing Issues: Power wheeling, Transmission open access, Pricing of power transactions, Security management in deregulated environment, Congestion management in deregulation, Transmission planning, Different methods of transmission pricing, Different transmission services, Transmission cost allocation methods, Locational marginal price, Firm transmission right, Transmission pricing model in India, Availability based tariff, Role of load dispatch centers (LDCs) , Power purchase agreements, Non price issues in electricity restructuring ,Global experience with electricity reforms in different countries. Ancillary Services: General description of some ancillary services, Ancillary services for restructuring, Ancillary services management in various countries, Reactive power management in deregulated electricity markets, Forward ancillary service auction.

Practicals, Assignments and Tutorials are based on above syllabus.

Design Review: Review of design process of Transformers, Rotating machines, Electromagnets. Computer Aided Design: Basic design methodology and engineering consideration, Selection of input data and design variables, Flow charts for design and design optimization of transformers, Rotating machines, Electromagnets, Starters, Chock coil. Finite Element(FEM) Method of Design: Fundamentals of Finite Element(FE) design, FE techniques and their applications for designing transformers, Rotating machines, Electromagnets etc, 2D and 3D parametric analysis, methods of FE analysis, FEM in one dimension, 2D, 3D, Governing equations, CAD programming using C language and MATLAB.
