Looking back on the dances that we’d like to see again
BY BRIAN MCCORMICK

I
nstead of compiling a list of best dances this
year –– I don’t do worst –– I wanted to write an
essay called “Fuck the critics!” with some obser-
vations of the absolute worst reviews of the year.
I still plan to write that piece, but there are larger
issues around the press in general that I’d like to
address, and it will require using some journalistic
skills –– like research.
Instead of offering up superlatives, I’ve made an
inventory of the pieces that I saw and would like to
see again. Some of these works will be performed
again, in part or in whole, and I wholeheartedly rec-
ommend you see them if you haven’t already.
Juliette Mapp’s “Anna, Ikea, and I” at Dans-

and forgiveness, and honor. In a time of struggle
and strife, Mapp reminded us of our fragility and
our strength, our isolation and our community.
In addition to the powerful emotions and message
communicated in this cathartic bio-dance, there
were stars dancing in star choreography, mentors
moving in maternal mimesis.
