Departmental Seminar (Clarke/Morley), Fridays at 3.30, PRM Lecture Theatre In Hilary term, there will be lectures on Kinship (Parkin/Ewart/Clarke) and the Anthropology of Religion (Gellner/Sarr), and in Trinity term lectures on Ethnicity and Nationalism (Gellner). The series Cultural Representations will probably continue into Hilary term, at least. Details will be on those terms lecture lists. Syllabuses for tutorials Paper 1, Culture and Identity. This paper will focus on the following topics: history and politics of anthropology; anthropology, ethnography and colonialism; gift and exchange; production and consumption; aesthetics, poetics, music and dance; material culture and museums; landscape and the built environment; personhood and the body; identity, ethnicity and nationalism; violence, resistance and agency. Paper 2, Kinship, Power and Change.This paper will focus on the following topics: family, kinship and relatedness; gender and age; ritual and religion; myth, history, memory and time; symbolism; representations of misfortune, including witchcraft, possession and healing; politics, law and the state; multiculturalism, migration and globalization; language and literacy; classification. Tutorials are held in Michaelmas term (eight), Hilary term (four) and Trinity term (four). Not all syllabus topics can be covered, so a selection is required in consultation with the supervisor. Hilary and in some cases Trinity terms are also when the two option courses are taught. Details of these will also be on those terms lecture lists. Details about how to choose options (which must be done by the end of Michaelmas term) will be issued later this term.
