DOE Sampling Statistics Calculation of Rating/Represented Value

Showerheads and Faucets
This document provides an example of the calculations used to determine the represented value of water consumption for a basic model using the applicable sampling statistics in the Code of Federal Regulations. This example is provided for demonstration purposes only, and it is the responsibility of the manufacturer of a covered product to ensure that basic models are certified in accordance with all applicable regulatory requirements. This example is based upon a theoretical test of a basic model of showerhead, using the sampling statistics of Section 429.29 of 10 CFR 429, although the statistical sampling requirements for faucets in 429.28 are essentially the same even though the water consumption standards are different for these products. Result of initial randomly selected sample of two units (n=2) of a basic model, tested in accordance with 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendix S: Unit 1 2.48 gpm Unit 2 2.41 gpm Follow Provisions of Section 429.29 (sampling plan for showerheads):

1) Calculate sample mean: =

..

2) Calculate standard deviation:s = 3) Calculate standard error: sx =

.. ..

=0.05

4) Calculate upper confidence limit (UCL): UCL = + t0.95sx , where

t0.95 is the studentt for a test at a 95% onetailed confidence level,

and n1 degrees of freedom (from the table in Appendix A to Subpart B of Part 429).

UCL = 2.45 + 6.31(0.04) = 2.70

5) Calculate represented value = UCL / 1.05 2.70 / 1.05 = 2.57 Sample mean is 2.45 Per 429.29(2), the represented value shall be no less than the higher of these two values. In this case, it is the UCL/1.05 value of 2.57. Represented value must be rounded to one decimal place 2.6 Since this value would be in violation of the DOE standard of 2.5 gpm for showerheads, but the two test units were both below the standard, it is

permissible to test another unit in order to reduce the standard deviation of the sample. 6) Result for Unit 3 = 2.44 gpm 7) Recalculate sample mean 8) Recalculate standard deviation:
.. .. .. ...

= 0.04

9) Recalculate standard error: 10 ) Recalculate upper confidence limit with a t0.95 for two degrees of freedom (sample size of 3, minus 1): UCL = 2.44 + 2.92(0.02) = 2.50 11 ) Recalculate represented value: 2.50 / 1.05 = 2.38
Sample mean is 2.44

Per 429.29(2), the represented value shall be no less than the higher of these two values. In this case, it is the sample mean of 2.44. Round to one decimal place 2.4 This value is compliant with DOE standards and may be used as the rated value of water consumption for this basic model. Alternatively, the manufacturer may conservatively rate it at 2.5. NOTE: for metering faucets, the final represented value of water consumption is rounded to two decimal places. For all other faucets and all showerheads, the final represented value of water consumption is rounded to one decimal place. (per 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendix S)
