Lunchtime Recitals at St Marys Cathedral

Thursday 1 August, 1.10pm Calum Robertson Clarinet John Bryden Piano Programme Philippe Gaubert Fantasie Arthur Benjamin Tombeau de Ravel Igor Stravinsky Three pieces Antony Horovitz Sonatina Allegro calmato Lento, quasi andante Con brio Calum Robertson graduated from the Masters in Performance course in November 2012 at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland after studying with John Cushing. He completed his Bachelor of Music with a first class honours degree in July 2011. In 2010 he performed Nielsen's clarinet concerto with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and in July 2011 took part in the prestigious London Symphony Orchestra Woodwind Academy. As a chamber musician he works frequently with fellow clarinettist Fraser Langton and has premiered new works for two clarinets by Rory Boyle, Steve Forman and Claire McCue. He freelances with the orchestra of Scottish Opera, the RSNO and The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. He is Assistant Organist at Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, Edinburgh. He has given recitals around Scotland and is in high demand as an accompanist. John Bryden was born in Edinburgh. He was taught by Mary Moore and gave his first BBC Broadcast at the age of 14. Cambridge. While at Cambridge he studied with Peter Katin later gaining a Martin Scholarship and studying in Master Classes in Siena with Guido Agosti and in Bonn with Claudio Arrau. John Bryden has played all over Britain as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician appearing several times at The Wigmore Hall and The Purcell Room, in France, Italy, Germany and Austria and on television. He is pianist of the Dartington Trio and specialises in onecomposer recitals in which he reads from the letters and newspapers of the time. He plays the organ and has accompanied services or given recitals in Cathedrals in the UK and abroad, most recently in Dresden and Salzburg. He is much in demand as a teacher and has coached most years at Dartington International Summer School where he also played for Master Classes given by Joan Dickson, Amaryllis Fleming and Jacqueline du Pr. John has made several recordings. He is a member of the staff of St Mary's Music School. Cathedral Tours - Free Every Tuesday at 10am and Thursday at 2.15pm (45 mins). Thomas Uhlmann was born in Kleve, Germany. He started to learn piano at 6 years old and had his first public performance when he was 14 years old. Four years later he had his orchestral debut with Mozarts C minor concerto in Bonn. He studied piano with Julian von Karolyi (Cologne and Wurzburg) and Guido Agosti (Siena and Rome). He worked as a musical assistant and conductor in several opera houses, the last in the Bavarian States Opera in Munich, where he assisted famous conductors such as Wolfgang Sawallisch, Carlos Kleiber and Sir Colin Davis. Since 1991 he has been a member of the staff of the University of Music in Munich, where he has his own concert series. Numerous concerts as soloist, chamber musician or accompanist have led him to many countries of Europe and Asia. He started playing piano duet with John Bryden in 1999 with a performance of the complete works for piano for four hands by W. A. Mozart in Munich.

Following last years highly successful before breakfast series, John Bryden returns at the keys of the Cathedrals Steinway for the complete Book II of J.S. Bachs Well-Tempered Clavier spread over four evenings. Luxuriate in Bachs sublime harmonies - with hot chocolate beforehand.

Saturday 3 August, 1.10pm Anna Mavromatidi Piano Hector Scott Violin Programme Clara Schumann (1819 - 1896) 3 Romances for Violin and Piano op.22 J.Brahms (1833 - 1897) Sonata for Violin and Piano in D op.78 Hector Scott, violin, born in Edinburgh in 1969, won all the string prizes at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland before going to Switzerland on a Caird Travelling Scholarship to study with Max Rostal and then to the New England Conservatory, Boston, USA, where he won the Concerto Club of Boston Prize, the Margaret Spanel Prize and led the NEC Honors Quartet. He now leads the Saltire Quartet, Chrysanth Trio and is Artistic Director of contemporary music group Twos Company. He is a frequent guest on Television and BBC Radio and is Head of Instrumental Studies at Clifton Hall School, Edinburgh, teaches at RCS Junior Academy and serves on the Music Advisory Committee for the Sir James Caird Travelling Scholarships Trust. Recordings are: GOMA; Working Through; Donkeys Ears; Breath of June; Under the Hammer; and Sound Asleep for Adults, Seniors and Babies, of which Sound Asleep for Babies won the Classical Music Magazines Record of the Year award in 1993. His previous Concerto performances have been with BT Scottish Ensemble, the Scottish Sinfonia, the Meadows Chamber Orchestra, the Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Dundee Symphony Orchestra and the New Edinburgh Orchestra.

Anna Mavromatidi was born in Russia. She studied the piano at the State Saratov College of Music and the State Saratov Music Conservatoire, specialising in performance, teaching, accompaniment and chamber music. In 1996 her family moved to Greece where Anna taught and performed extensively. Annas further education took her to the RCS (formerly Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama) Glasgow , where she obtained her Postgraduate Diploma in Performance (Solo) in 2001 and a Masters Degree in Performance (Chamber Music) in 2002. Throughout her time at the RCS, Anna has been heavily involved with Chamber music. She has won numerous prizes and awards, including The John D Miles Prize (Accompaniment) and The Ian D Watt Award (Chamber Music). In 2001 Anna was a finalist at the International Chamber Music Competition HELEXPO in Thessaloniki (Greece). Anna has extensive performance experience, with recitals in Russia, Greece and Britain. Currently Anna teaches at Clifton Hall School (Edinburgh) and is a lecturer at RCS Piano Department. She is also accompanist to Glasgow Philharmonic Male Voice Choir and Glasgow Cathedral Choral Society. Most recent performances include Beethoven Piano Concerto no.4 with CAOS, recitals at Lent Fest (Glasgow), Glasgow West End Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Lerwick (Shetland). In August 2011 in collaboration with Oksana Mavrodii (Soprano) Anna recorded her first CD Romantic Russian Songs.
