NCAT Preservation Group Study

Auburn University

ISSA, AEMA, ARRA Annual Conference Feb 19th-22nd Indian Wells, CA

Founded in 1986 - By the National Asphalt Paving Association & Auburn University -World leader and authority in hot mix asphalt research, development, technology, and education in the areas of Structural Design Construction Methods Materials and Testing Performance Measurement and Prediction Pavement Preservation, Rehabilitation, Recycling, and Maintenance Environment and Highway Safety - Accelerated Loading compresses 10-15 years of truck traffic into 2 years - Almost continuous truck traffic - 1st research effort in pavement preservation

NCAT Pavement Test Track

NCAT Trucking Fleet

Five 8 axle trucks weighing 140,000 each Run from 5:00 am to 11:00 pm daily Approximately 680 miles per day

Fleet

Study Locations: (Auburn, Al) NCAT Test Track (various sections)(PP or reactive to distress trigger) Lee Road 159 (multiple treatments placed within 2500 section) Study Objectives: Develop life cycle curve as compared to pretreatment condition Monitor pavement life extension of treated pavement Comparison of treatments will not be conducted by NCAT - treatment to control section Study Sponsors: Alabama DOT Oklahoma DOT Mississippi DOT South Carolina DOT Missouri DOT Tennessee DOT North Carolina DOT FP-2 Inc. Study Duration: 3 years

Existing Surface is thirteen years old Study to take place on both inbound and outbound lanes Quarry & Asphalt Plant will provide truck traffic information complete with tare and gross vehicle weights. Appears to be structurally sound Rutting = none-minor Cracking = severe in outbound wheel paths/ moderate on inbound lane

Study Importance
Reflects a shift in philosophy from agencies - worst first to pavement preservation Will provide data that will assist pavement managers with treatment selection -Right Treatment, Right Road, Right Timing Will reinforce the value of PP to agencies that already have robust PP programs encourage innovation to enhance current and future treatments to better mitigate pavement distresss
