Classifying Acids and Bases as Strong Electrolytes, Weak Electrolytes or Non-Electrolytes

Electrolytes are substances whose aqueous solutions contain ions and therefore conduct electricity while non-electrolytes are substances that do not form ions in solution and therefore do not conduct electricity.

To determine whether the given substances (Acids and Bases) are Strong Electrolytes, Weak Electrolytes or Non-Electrolytes. To know the conductivity or non-conductivity, for safety purposes, of the common substances that we encounter in our daily living.

HCl (Muriatic Acid) (25 mL) Salt Solution (25 mL) CH3 COOH (Acetic Acid) (25 mL) Tap Water (25 mL) Alcohol (25 mL)

Tissue Paper Old Newspaper Graduated Cylinder 5 Small Jars (clear glass) Home Made Conductivity Tester

HOME MADE CONDUCTIVITY TESTER

Gather all the materials you need. Use the newspaper to cover your working area to avoid spilling of the substance. In separate jar, pour carefully your five (5) prepared substances. Take your tester and dip the ends of it in each jar containing substance. Do not forget to wipe the ends of the tester with a tissue paper after every dip to avoid contamination. Observe what will happen to the LED of the tester as you dip its ends in each substance. Record your observations.

Base on your observations; classify each solution as Strong Electrolytes, Weak Electrolytes or NonElectrolytes using the conductivity scale drawn below. CONDUCTIVITY SCALE FOR CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT SCALE LED BRIGHTNESS CONDUCTIVITY 0 Off Non-Electrolyte 1 Dim Weak Electrolyte 2 Medium 3 Bright Strong Electrolyte 4 Very Bright

) mark. Weak Electrolytes Non-Electrolytes

Strong Electrolyte

1) What is an Electrolyte? Among all the given substances, list all the electrolytes/conductors.

2) What is a Non-Electrolyte? Among all the given substances, list all the nonelectrolytes/non-conductors.

3) What effect would the concentration have on the conductivity of a substance?

4) Explain why some substances/compounds are Strong Electrolytes, Weak Electrolytes or Non-Electrolytes.

This lets you know if the amount of substance affects the conductivity/non-conductivity of a substance. Among all the given substances form the past experiment, choose a substance and prepare two (2) different amounts of it. Use the home made conductivity tool you have. Does the amount of substance affect the conductivity? Why / why not?
