The natural gas industry in Australia has launched a campaign to highlight the critical role natural gas plays in Australian life and how it can be an extraordinary driver of our nations future prosperity. I am writing to Metgasco staff, contractors, suppliers and valued partners to seek support for this campaign and in doing so protect our jobs and our future, in an environmentally responsible way. Metgasco has no doubt about the industrys ability to maintain and increase our prosperity, nor do we have doubts about our ability to protect the environment and respect landholder s rights. We are aware that we must not only act responsibly in these areas, we must also be seen by the general community as acting in this manner. Without environmental responsibility and respect for landholders we will not have government and community support, irrespective of the wealth we create. It aims to protect Australias interests in response to activism and unfounded criticism of the industry. The natural gas industry, which includes conventional, coal seam gas and shale gas, has the potential to make a huge and positive difference. Australians have enjoyed low cost supplies of natural gas for years, taking advantage of it for heating and cooking in our homes, for fuel in our industries, for power generation and as a feedstock for fertiliser manufacture. We can take advantage of our natural gas for years to come and while protecting the environment and respecting all stakeholders. We have potentially huge supplies of gas that can be used for our domestic energy needs as well as for export opportunities. Many of you will have read about the concerns we face over gas supplies for domestic needs on the eastern coast through the remainder of this decade and beyond. You will also be aware that we have enough gas resources in the ground for domestic needs and to export, and that very large developments in Queensland and other states of Australia are under way as a result. To give you a feel for the positive impact of the industry: last year more than 100,000 jobs were created; the industry is expected to soon contribute $13billion every year in tax; more than $1000 is being invested every second; we provide a practical clean energy; and we have a safe industry with a good environmental record.

We are asking Australians to recognise the importance of the industry and the significant threats to our industry that activists create. A relatively small group of vocal activists should not be allowed to determine public policy and threaten Australias future. Red and green tape needs to be cut and the industry encouraged to proceed with exploration and development in a responsible manner.
