TULIP CROCHET PATTERN

You can use any kind of yarn as long as you choose the hook size accordingly. Made from DK weight yarn my tulips are about 5 cm. Abbreviations: sc - single crochet st - stitch dec - single crochet decrease, I advise to use the "invisible decrease" method as it gives a much nicer look sl st - slip stitch hdc - half double crochet dc - double crochet You also need to know how to start with a magic ring.

Outside petal (make 3) 1: 4 sc in magic ring (4) 2: [2 sc into next st, sc into next st] 2x (6) 3: [2 sc into next st, sc into next 2 st] 2x (8) 4: [2 sc into next st, sc into next 3 st] 2x (10) 5: [2 sc into next st, sc into next 4 st] 2x (12) 6: sc around (12) 7: [2 sc into next st, sc into next 5 st] 2x (14) 8: sc around (14) 9: sc around (14) 10: [2 sc into next st, sc into next 6 st] 2x (16) 11: sc around (16) 12: [2 sc into next st, sc into next 7 st] 2x (18) 13: sc around (18) 14: sc around (18) 15: [dec, sc] 6x (12) 16: dec 6x (6)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly. Flatten petal - the blunt end will form a little "spoon". Inner petal (make 3) 1: 4 sc in magic ring (4) 2: [2 sc into next st, sc into next st] 2x (6) 3: [2 sc into next st, sc into next 2 st] 2x (8) 4-10: sc around for 7 rows (8) Fasten off leaving a long tail, flatten petal.

Assembly Using the yarn ends, sew together the inner petals, first closing the bottom edges (make sure there's no gap left) then attaching the folded edges until about halfway up. Start sewing together the large petals again using the yarn ends, starting at the bottom center and along the fold until about row 7. Sew together first and second petal, then second to third.

At this point, put the assembled inner petals into the middle, placing them so that their tips are at the same height as those of the outside petals. Sew the inner petals to the inside of the outer petals, then sew together the last gap between the outer petals, but leave a small hole at the center, so you can stick the tulip to the stem.

Stem: use a wooden stick of appropriate thickness (I used satay sticks for mine). With green yarn, make the flowers base: 1: 6 sc in magic ring - do not pull the ring fully closed! 2: 2 sc into each st, sl st to join the last st to the 1st Finish off leaving a long tail, then use it to sew the base to the bottom of the flower. Let the other yarn end (from the magic ring) hang out between the stitches freely, so you can still use it to tighten the hole. Push the stick through the hole and up inside the flower until the inner circle of petals stop it, then pull the magic ring tight around it.

Thread your green yarn to a needle and make a stitch through the base. Hold the short end to the stick while you wrap the yarn around the stick. Continue it until you reach desired length of stem, then fix the yarn to the stick with glue.

Leaf: Chain 21. 1: starting with the 2nd chain from hook, work one stitch into every chain as follows: 5 sc, hdc, 10 dc, hdc, 3 sc. Turn & chain 1 2: 2 sc, hdc, 12 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, sl st. Chain 2, turning around sl st into the 1st chain you just made, then sl st in the last sc of row 1 but on the opposite side, into the remaining free loop from the starting chain. Keep working on this side: 2 sc, 2 hdc, 11 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc. Turn & chain 1 3: 6 sc, 2 hdc, 4 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, 5 sl st (you've reached the point of the leaf, so start working on the other edge) again 5 sl st, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 4 dc, 2 hdc, 6 sc Finish off, leaving a long tail. Wrap the bottom of the leaf around the stem and sew it tight to hold in place.

Alternative: tulip bud - you only need to make the outside petals, then sew them together all the way up. Also, you might need to stuff the bud to keep its form.
