INTRODUCTION
H.D.Kote taluk is one of the seven taluks of Mysore district. It is bounded in the north by Hunsur taluk, in the south by Kodagu district, in the east by Nanjangud & Mysore taluk and in the west by Kodagu district. The total geographical area of the taluk is 1618 Sq.Kms.This taluk enjoys more or less salubrious climate of Bangalore. The climatic condition is congenial for industrial development. As per 2001 census H.D.Kote taluk had a population of 245930 persons.. The density of the population of the taluk is 152 persons per sq.km. Strategic advantages of the taluk are the availability of semi skilled persons, good water resources, abundant natural resources, polluted free environment & favorable weather conditions. Also abundant cattle & forest resources, varied agricultural produce, well organized social infrastructure & upcoming horticulture sectors. Most prominent is the proximity to the industrial towns like Bangalore, Coimbathore, Tirupur, Erode & Salem .

RESOURCES ENDOWMENT
H.D Kote taluk . Resources of an area can be distinctly classified into 2 categories namely Human Resources and Material Resources. Availability of natural resources in a particulasr area is not alone sufficient for industrial development. There should be adequate availability of skilled manpower amongst its human resource to exploit the natural resources. It has been realized that industrial backwardness cannot be always attributed to lack of resources but because of absence of skilled and motivated entrepreneurs and workers in an area. Thelevel of literacy determines the availability of entrepreneurship among the local people of an area. As per 2001 census, there were 111926 literates in the taluk thereby accounting 52.84% Agriculture is the main occupation of people of the taluk. Ragi is the important crop grown in the taluk. The agriculturists in the H.D Kote taluk are getting their financial requirement through commercial Banks, Primary Land Development Bank and Agriculture Cooperative Bank. Forest resources are very good in H.D Kote taluk and it has 33031 hectares under forest as against the total area of 62851 hectares under forest in the district as a whole. Hence, there is good scope for starting industries based on forest resources. Soil and climate of the taluk are ideally suited for growing horticultural crops. Farmers are not coming forward to increase the area under horticultural crops due to the absence of marketing and cold storage facilities. Establishment of cold storage facilities, marketing outlet and setting up of a few fruit processing units are likely to give a big boost to horticulture in the taluk. Sericulture is an important activity in the taluk. The climatic condition in the taluk is also conducive for Mulberry cultivation. This is grown in the entire district and is cultivated through tube well irrigation. The department of Sericulture is motivating the sericulturists to take up this activity on a large scale. Mulberry is cultivated in 84.80 hectares in the taluk with a production of 58.655 tonnes. There is ample scope for expanding this activity in the taluk. H.D.Kote taluk is very good in mineral deposits such as Magnasite, Kyanite, Dolomite, Dunite, Soapstone & Quartz, hence there is good scope for industry based on mineral deposits.

INFRASTRUCTURE FACILITIES Availability of infrastructure facilities in adequate measure is essential for growth and development of industries. The infrastructure facilities are broadly classified into two categories i.e. Physical infrastructure and Social infrastructure. Land is considered to be an important factor for development of industries. The land, which is fallow and barren, can be only used for industrial purpose because this is considered unfit for agriculture purpose.There is sufficient barren as well as uncultivable land available in the taluk, which could be utilised for starting industries & establishing industrial estates without encroaching upon agricultural land. Since H.D.Kote taluk is a good commercial centre, it is very much essential to develop some more plots in this taluk to speed up the industrial development.H.D.Kote taluk is having sufficient water supply and . the water may be diverted/used for industrial purpose. Power is another important input required for industrial development. H.D.Kote taluk does not have any power generating stations. It was ascertained from the authorities that the power requirement of H.D.Kote taluk is met by the supplies from Sharavathy and Mahatma Gandhi Hydro-Electric Stations. Railways play an important role in the speedy development of industries in a particular area. H.D.Kote is not on the railway network hence laying railway line in the taluk may pave the way for speedy development of industrial development Proper roads are very essential for moving raw material as well as finished goods from one place to another. H.D.Kote taluk has got good road network Since 40 years Mysore Air Port is put into operation but not with excellent infrastructure, hence an effort is to be made for upgrading to international level. Nearest seaports to H.D.Kote taluk are at Mangalore and Chennai. Postal and telecommunication facilities are fairly well developed in H.D.Kote taluk. Entrepreneurship is an important factor which promotes industrial development in a particular area. Though H.D.Kote taluk is near to Bangalore, there is lack of entrepreneurship among the local people. Marketing has assumed great importance today. There exists good market potential within the district as well as for the products manufactured in the taluk. State Bank of Mysore is the lead Bank of the district. 3 commercial banks & 10 Grameena banks are functioning in the taluk.Karnataka State Financial Corporation is a regional industrial Bank set up by the Govt. of Karnataka to provide financial assistance to small scale and medium industries. Education plays a vital role in the field of industrial development.Medical facility plays an important role for the smooth functioning of the industries.Industries are covered under ESI Act wherein the employees are given medical facilities within their reach. At present there are 1 Government and 4 Private hospitals, 14 primary Health Centres, 3 Family Welfare Centre are taking care of the health problems of H.D.Kote taluk.

INDUSTRIAL SCENARIO
There are no large and Medium industries in H.D.Kote taluk as on 31st March 2005. A study on the existing small scale industries revealed that majority of the industries is of traditional type. According to the information furnished by the District Industrial Center, Mysore there are 2917 small scale units registered upto the end of March,2000 in the taluk, with a total investment of Rs.4572 lakhs providing employment to 15901 persons. Khadi and Village Industries Board is another agency which helps rural artisans in pursuing their traditional avocation Artisans constitute traditional skills at the grass root level and form an important segment in the society. No systematic data is collected on unregistered units in the district/State. During the third All India Census, an attempt has been made to collect data on unregistered units in the State. The data was collected on a sample basis . However, it does not give the exact picture on number of unregistered units in a particular taluk/district/State. Apart from industry agriculture, construction activities, beedi rolling, agarbathi rolling, retailing and whole-sale marketing of agricultural products are considered as economic activities in an area. The activities mentioned are also providing a gainful employment to the masses in the unorganized sector. The workers need not have any educational background. However, this adds in computing GDP/NDP of the district/State. Rolling of beedi is a home made activity. This activity provides mass employment to the uneducated persons. Eventhough, it has been considered as health hazard still few families are depending upon instead of going and working in an open atmosphere Agarbathi rolling is another means of livelihood. These workers were getting orders from manufacturers for rolling raw agarbathies. This is providing a sustainable employment to the unorganized workers in the taluk/district. It is indicated in the net domestic product that professionals such as lawyers and doctors, other workers like hotels, farm, retail shops, transport workers etc are also contributing to the income of the State. H.D.Kote taluk/district is having good number of professionals like lawyers and doctors who are self-employed. There are good number of hotels where consider number of people are employed, which is also providing gainful employment.
