Our role in the Olympics

Olympic Park event overlay

GHD managed the design and installation of a broad range of major but temporary Olympic overlay works on behalf of the Olympic Co-ordination Authority. These works included nine major vehicle and pedestrian bridges, a twin lane underpass beneath the Olympic Boulevard, conversion of the existing site roads into a single direction loop road, hydraulic and electrical services for the full range of catering and guest facilities, and major security check points for entry to the Olympic site. GHD also managed the construction of two permanent, major parkland areas on remediated sites, and the management of the sites up to and during the Games.

Occupational health & safety

OH &S plans were prepared for a number of ORTA sites, to ensure that staff and spectators had an appropriate level of protection during the Games. The plans ensured that site based hazards and risks were identified, assessed and controlled in accordance with legislative requirements and best practice.

Great Southern Stand

GHD was appointed project manager by the Melbourne Cricket Club for the design and construction of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) Great Southern Stand. The $150 million project comprises a 27 bay stand for 45,000 spectators.

Northern Water Feature, Olympic Park

One of the main scenic attractions of the Olympic Boulevard at Homebush Bay is the Northern Water Feature which doubles as an environmentally friendly stormwater reclamation system. Located at a former landfill, the feature will capture stormwater runoff which will be thoroughly cleansed through newly created wetland ponds, polished through a mini-filter system, and recycled through a 10-metre high fountain at the northern end of the Boulevard. As project manager of its design and construction, GHD oversaw the clever marriage of engineering and environmental initiatives which converted a former dump into a major feature of the Public Domain.

Social impact assessments

A review of Olympic preparations was undertaken for the Bankstown City Council to identify potential social impacts and areas of duplication or gaps in planning. Consultation with key stakeholders enabled the development of strategies to ensure the community needs were met prior to and during the Games.

All GHD offices operate under a Practice Quality Management System that is certified to AS/ISO 9001:1994.

Our expertise
GHD provided project management to the Games at Olympic Park, as well as at the many temporary works required to manage the huge crowds and traffic. We provided transportation consulting and management, co-ordinated construction, and advised on logistics. And we designed services for the ever popular live sites and floating hotels that dotted beautiful Sydney Harbour during the Games. From early planning, through to day to day support during the events, up until the final close, GHD was there, helping to make it happen.

Olympic Stadium
The $500 million Sydney Olympic Stadium is the centrepiece of the Homebush Bay Olympic complex. GHD-Flack & Kurtz Australia designed the telecommunications security, sound and video infrastructure on the Stadium, and is providing similar services for the Hanoi Stadium for the 2003 South-East Asian Games. GHD's input to the project was further provided in two phases. Prior to financial close, a report examining time, cost and quality issues was prepared for lenders, underwriters and investors in the project. Since financial close, GHD provided construction phase services including time, cost and quality reviews, as well as progress claim certification together with general advice to the Trustee.

Traffic planning and temporary transport facilities

The Olympic Roads and Transport Authority (ORTA) developed temporary transport infrastructure including park & ride sites for spectators and the Games workforce, bus depots, bus layovers, fleet car parks, staging areas and pedestrian access routes to venues. GHD investigated and reported on a large number of these sites, determined feasibility and prepared designs, specifications and operations plans.

Ship berthing services

The Sydney Ports Corporation was assisted with engineering services to enable berthing of nine passenger cruise ships in Sydney Harbour during the Olympics, when the ships acted as floating hotels. Detailed design work was undertaken to install a combination of temporary and permanent piping to enable the vessels to take on water and to discharge sewerage on shore, preventing its discharge to Sydney Harbour.

Our experience
Transportation consulting
GHD provided infrastructure design and logistics consulting services for Sydneys Olympic transportation system. Transport, road and rail infrastructure was designed, and support was provided on system timetabling and co-ordination. Transportation projects involving GHD included the Olympic site road network, Sydney Light Rail, Airport to City Rail Link, and the Homebush-Olympic Rail Link. GHD was also project manager for Sydneys monorail system.

Olympics 2000 infrastructure development

GHD was commissioned by the Olympic Co-ordination Authority to manage this complex and demanding project of some $400 million of infrastructure works including road and rail infrastructure at Olympic Park. The team also managed the design and construction of all major services, including water and sewerage systems, and coordinated the utility service providers for gas, electricity and telecommunications. Extensive hard and soft landscaping works were also undertaken. An environmental management system, adhering to ESD principles, was implemented and maintained.

SOCOG logistics support

GHD assisted SOCOG's risk management team by undertaking risk-based assessments of all logistics facilities supporting the management of the Games and operational needs to develop Venue Safety Management Plans. GHD also assisted with the development of induction and training courses, as well as undertaking audits and providing advice / support to venue Logistic Managers during the Games.

Olympic Transport Operations Centre

GHD designed the equipment and furniture layouts for the ORTA Transport Operations Centre (TOC) the central management point for all Sydney's Olympic Transport systems. Assistance was also provided with "Test Events", analysis of outcomes and refinement of the TOC resulting from these exercises. GHD also assisted with communications technology, including:

Sydney Superdome Olympics Live sites

GHD designed the civil and electrical services for the large video screen Olympics Live sites at Belmore Park, Martin Place and Circular Quay for the Council of the City of Sydney and the Olympic Co-ordination Authority. Work included the design of temporary services for the large crowds expected at these venues during the Olympic Games. GHD also supervised works at two additional sites the Domain and Pyrmont Bay. GHD was appointed as Independent Engineer, providing advice to the lending agencies prior to contract award and throughout the construction phase. This $160 million oval-shaped structure 124m wide and 148m long seats 20,000 people and is home to the Sydney Kings basketball team. It was the venue for the Olympic gymnastics, basketball, volleyball and handball competitions.
