UNU-IAS features RCE Cebu in traditional knowledge and biodiversity book

The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) launched on February 2013 a publication entitled Traditional Knowledge and Biodiversity: Learning Contributions of the Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development. The book features learning contributions of selected 17 Regional Centers of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCEs) out of the more than 100 members of the network of RCEs. RCE Cebus ethnobotany project in Campo Siete in Minglanilla, Cebu was featured in Chapter 4 of the book. It was entitled RCE Cebu: Toward a Sustainable Forest Community Ethnobotany of Campo Siete Forest Community. The chapter was written by Prof. Geofe O. Cadiz and Cielo L. Inocian, both of the UP Cebu Biology Program, and RCE Cebu Coordinator Ian Vincent C. Manticajon. The ethonbotany project is part of the inventory of herbal plants initiative of RCE Cebu which will culminate in the publication of a booklet as a useful reference for experts and the people in the community. The ethnobotany study is the precursor to the overarching theme of RCE Cebu to promote initiatives related to economically and environmentally sustainable cultivation and use of forest resources, it was stated. The study was able to identify a total of 73 species of plants belonging to 35 families. "These plants were recognized as having numerous ethnobotanical uses." Copies of the book in electronic form are available online and at the RCE Cebu office at Rm. 350 Arts and Sciences Building, University of the Philippines Cebu. ###

Scenario Building Workshop and Multi-Stakeholders Dialogue in Campo Siete
Around 40 members of the Campo Siete forest community and other stakeholders from the government and civil society converged at the Campo Siete, Minglanilla, Cebu barangay chapel on May 18, 2011 to participate in the "Scenario Building Workshop and MultiStakeholders Dialogue" organized by RCE Cebu. The activity was with the support and guidance of Japan-based Institute of Global Environment and Society (IGES). Prior to the workshop, RCE Cebu conducted case study visits and initiated dialogues and interviews with the community and other stakeholders. The scenario building exercise in Campo Siete tried to address two key points in overcoming the challenges of social justice, poverty alleviation and sustainable forest management in the area: (1) multisectoral participation and dialogue, and (2) commitment to a shared future. The activity was among five case studies supported by IGES which are intended to outline the key factors for effective decision making at the national level regarding adaptation to climate change, and intended to become one of the inputs to support the Rio + 20 process. ###

Roundtable Conference on Initiatives and Best Practices in Sustainability and Resiliency of Local Communities
RCE Cebu gathered pioneers and leaders in the local communities in a roundtable conference that pooled together and shared the best practices and initiatives of different stakeholders in the community in sustainability and disaster risk management. It was dubbed, "A Roundtable Conference/Sharing on Initiatives and Best Practices in Sustainability and Resiliency of Local Communities" and was held on April 30, 2012 at the Rajah Hall, Rajah Park Hotel, Cebu City. The conference was supported by the Center for Participatory Governance (CPAG) and the Partnership of Philippine Support Service Agencies (PHILSSA). With around 50 participants, the conference shared with different stakeholders and actors local knowledge, initiatives and journeys of leading local communities and organizations engaged in disaster risk management and sustainable development. The participants were expected to understand better the urgency of sustainable development governance in the face of climate change-induced disaster. ###

RCE Cebu, with its incoming new set of officers and Board, is faced with the challenge of broadening and strengthening its network in Cebu as the island responds to climate change.
