HE GOVERNMENT has sent an advertising van round parts of London calling on illegal immigrants to give themselves up and offer themselves for deportation. It was followed up at some London stations by street checks by transport police and Border Agency stafftargeting black and Asian people.

Its an attempt to whip up racism and to divide opposition to the Tories and the rich. Cameron and Co are descending into the gutter and thereby encouraging the open racists in UKIP and the fascists of the English Defence League and the British National Party. We say no to racism, no to the Tories and their attacks on working people. Unemployment, low wages and lack of housing are real problemsbut theyre not caused by immigration: The reason for these problems is that the bankers and the bosses plunged the economy into crisis six years ago and it isnt recovering. While a tiny elite still have fabulous wealth, many of us are in a desperate situation.

Racist van - target the tax dodgers, not migrants Blame the rich, not immigrants: the richest 1,000 persons in the UK, just 0.003 percent of the adult population and you dont qualify unless you have a handy 75 millionhave increased their wealth by no less than 35 billion in the last year alone. Since 2008, their wealth has soared by a staggering 190 billion. Thats just their gains. All told their collective total wealth has now reached a mindboggling 449 billion. There are now 88 billionaires in Britain, 11 more than the year before. Thats where the money has gone! We should not be divided. We need to unite in defence of our jobs, homes and services and for a future for young people. Demonstrate against the EDL in Tower Hamlets, Saturday 7 September

Migrants dont take jobs: a whole series of studies shows that migration has virtually no effect on the level of wages or unemployment. If anything, migration leads to a slight increase in wages because of the boost to the economy. Migrants dont come here to grab benefits: of the two million net migrants to the UK from the eight eastern European countries that joined the EU in 2004, just 13,000 people have claimed jobseekers allowance (JSA). Immigration is a good thing! Britain has benefited immensely from the talent, energy and skills of migrants. We wouldnt have an NHS without migrants and thats true of many other key services.
