4 monthly heat gain for all windows (per unit floor area)
The graphics shows the performance of current glazing in AUP at west orientation in room 306. The four scenarios are in order of pure glazing, glazing + blinds, glazing + overhangs, and glazing +blinds + overhangs. From the diagrams, the conclusion could be obtained as follow: Blinds work effectively in terms of solar radiation, however, with the cost of huge decrease of illuminance level and daylight. The daylight is higher in Sep, Aug, and Jun than the rest of the months. During afternoon time, especially from 3PM to 4PM, the daylight level is higher. Solar heat gain varies based upon different monthly hugely. From Apr to Sep, the heat gain requires more focus. The heat gain and heating energy consumption are inverse relationship. The use of blinds, which leads to the decrease of solar heat gain, increases the heating energy as well. Meanwhile, it decreases the energy for cooling.

The graphics shows the performance of current glazing system in AUP at south orientation in room 306. The daylight is higher in Feb, Oct, and Nov than the rest of the months. During noon time, especially from 10PM to 2PM, the daylight level is higher. Solar heat gain varies based upon different monthly similarly. From Aug to Oct, the heat gain is a little higher than the rest of months. Comparing with west orientation, with four more windows in width direction, the average illuminance level is worse in terms of distribution.

4 monthly heat gain for all windows (per unit floor area)
The graphics shows the performance of current Glazing A at south orientation. The four scenarios are in order of pure glazing, glazing + blinds, glazing + overhangs, and glazing +blinds + overhangs. From the diagrams, the conclusion could be obtained as follow: Generally speaking, the blinds work more efficiently in terms of illuminance rather than solar radiation. The change of glazing system, comparing with original glazing of AUP, could only change the specific data or number ,rather than the whole perform format. The reason of similar electric consumption in different scenarios, as we assumed, might be that COMFEN considers artificial lights on while occupied, which demonstrates no difference in this aspect.

4 monthly heat gain for all windows (per unit floor area)
The graphics shows the performance of current Glazing B at south orientation. The four scenarios are in order of pure glazing, glazing + blinds, glazing + overhangs, and glazing +blinds + overhangs. Comparing with Glazing A, Glazing B performs differently in certain respects. Glazing A offers better average illuminance level than Glazing B does. However, in terms of solar heat gain, Glazing B is a better choice. Whats more, Glazing B consumes more energy than Glazing A does.

The graphics shows the performance of two west options for SARUP Room 306. The four scenarios are in order of pure glazing, glazing + blinds, glazing + overhangs, and glazing +blinds + overhangs. In therms of energy consumption this strategy is better to keep it with the overhangs and blinds. Assuming that students will partially close the blinds during the afternoon, the heating wouldnt raise as it is shown on the graphic and it will provide a better manipulation for comfort. This will also reduce the glare and still obtain daylight (Fig 2 and Fig 3 west with overhang). U factor= .20 Tvis =.61

When choosing the glazing system, we simulate the current glazing SARUP has first. The original glazing is composed of glass 2004, air (0.5inch) and glass 2162. Glazing A is composed of glass8253, argon (0.5inch), and glass 3256. While glazing B is composed of glass 2903, gas (0.5inch with 10% air and 90% argon), and glass 2903. First of all the glass we chose is clear low-E glass, which could guarantee students view requirement and the basic decrease of heat transfer. Comparing the glazing performances in terms of U factor, T vis, SHGC and so on, glazing A and B are the final one offering better balance among these items.

Conclusion
Concerning the south orientation, Glazing A performs better in terms of illuminance. However, when coming to the solar heat gain, Glazing B is a better choice. Blinds work better to block sunlight, with the cost of decreasing illuminance level dramatically. Although the peak heat gain in west orientation is higher than that in south, the average heat gain is higher in south than west. The best economical combination for south orientation could be Glazing B + blinds, to offer a more even distribution illuminance with less heat gain. The main difference with option A and B on the West side is that B with the overhang gain more illuminance as if it moves away from the window wall than window A. The heating energy with the overhang does not increase significantly. Although the heat gain increases with option B it may not be an issue if we consider that this spaces are most occupied during colder season. This option provide a better light distribution in the classroom.
