Undoubtedly, the Sentosa outing brought an indelible experience for me, liberating me from the choking
stress derived from study for a long time. Anticipation for a warm sunshine and the smell of a burning
sand kept me awake the night before.

On board the express train to Sentosa and seeing myself going farther away from the city, I couldn't

Amusingly, taking photos had become everybody's ticket to socialize. I took photos of almost everyone--

The time went by like a breeze while playing games, chasing each other and laughing at jokes. For the
first time in my life, I was pushed into the sea by a friend and accidentally drank a bit of seawater.To the
amusement of everybody. They laughed and I didn't care. I actually thought it was funny! Contents

Events
Civil Defence Exercise at Shelton High School By Mr. Adli Ismail

Synopsis
As part of our offering to our students to be better members of the community,
unity,
both in Singapore and their home countries, we have included the Community
munity
Emergency Preparedness Programme, in which our students will learn first hand
from Civil Defence officers the causes of civil disasters and how to respond
nd to
such disasters.

Preliminary communication was engaged with Liutenant Shahdele Isman sman

regarding this programme as early as October 2008. Finally both the SCDF
F and
Shelton High School agreed on the date and the extent of the programme.

The Event
The day started ideally. It was the first day of Term 2. Students streamed in their high school uniform
iform for the first
fi time ever. They did not
know that Monday 6th was a Civil Defence day exercise.

After the usual Assembly, the high school students were led to the School Hall for the first module: Fire Safety and Casualty Evacuation. The
module started with a video clip showing the causes of domestic disasters with dramatic reenactments which captured the imagination of
all.

This module was followed with a round of lecture and quiz on casualty evacuation.

After Module 3, the officers proceeded smoothly to Module 4 which was Emergency Procedures. Here the senior officer, Captain Ashari,
briefed the students on peacetime emergencies that can happen locally in Singapore and in their home countries. Then other junior officers
briefed the students stockpiling of essential items for emergencies as well as the Singapore’s Public Warning System.

Then students were given their first taste of action that day.

The students were led to the car park and were given a demonstration on fire fighting using the various
fire extinguishers. Then student volunteers were called to put out the fire.

Then students were given their lunch break.

After lunch, the Civil Defence paramedics took over the teaching of Module 1 which is first aid. A
lecture with very informative photographs about injuries was highlighted to the students. Again this
captured the imagination. After this a demonstration on first aid was given. There was even a
competition organized for the students on which team could bandage their partner well.

Finally the last Module was taught to the students. This was Module 2: One Man Cardio Pulmonary
Resuscitation. Here the paramedics showed the students the proper and correct way to respond to
emergency situations where the first aider has to perform CPR.

As the rain drizzled to a trickle, the exercise ended. We at Shelton High School thanked the SCDF for
their excellent programme.

Shelton High Learning Journey:
Singapore Science Centre By Judith Dalam

Shelton High students closed the first term of the school year with a visit to the
Singapore Science Center at Jurong East on 27 March 2009. The students,
accompanied by their teachers, viewed the exhibits to gain more insights and ideas
for their science fair projects.
The Science Fair is an opportunity for students to apply the scientific method to conduct independent research. The results of each student's
research will be presented on 27 April 2009 in the school--where the student's efforts are displayed and where students are interviewed to
determine scientific merit.

Preparation for the fair begun with the submission of the proposal early in January 2009. Some of the project titles submitted were Heat
Transfer through Different Medium, Water Rocket, Chromatography, Crazy Paper Box, Herbarium, Fruit Battery, Water Purifier, Midget Boat,
Mini Volcano and Hydrogen Balloon. The students were given the months of February and March to collect their data, prepare their models
and write their final papers.

Ms.Sabina Sareena, Head of Science, together with the other science teachers had advised and guided the students during their
preparations. The whole project aims to give the students the opportunity to test their own hypothesis, to pursue their topic of interest and
to further their understanding of the science concepts learnt in the classroom.

De-Stressing with Nature A-Level
Batam, Indonesia

The trip to Sentosa on Saturday afternoon of the 21st March 2009 was a great time for me and my friends from the A-level class
although I was quite irritated at first because it was postponed from its previous date. My feelings totally changed the very
moment we arrived at the resort. The tenderness of the sun and the scent of the sea water were things that I used to enjoy in
Indonesia. Playing volleyball by the beach was the most enjoyable activity we had. I hadn't played the game for a long time since
I finished my senior high school, nearly nine months ago.

We found a place at another side of the beach where we can gaze at the horizon. It was a bit disappointing that it was obstructed
by a lot of cargo ships and many other buildings. We just sat there and took some photos while enjoying the sound of the waves.
Suddenly, we saw the sunset! It was really marvelous. We grabbed the opportunity to snap as many shots of the sunset as we
could because it was moving very quickly. After that, we went back to join the others. God was so generous to us that day because
we found a beautiful rainbow across the blue sky, like a painting. How lucky I was that day!

I realized that reuniting with nature is a nice way to de-stress. Nature provides us
abundant enjoyment and grandeur. In return, one must do something to protect the
environment for the sake of everyone and the generations to come.

SCI Students in The Brewing Tiger Advanced Diploma in Travel, Tourism and Hospitality
Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal

On 10th March 2009, Shelton International College organized a

visit to Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore, home of the world-famous
Tiger Beer. It was an educational and memorable experience for us!
It was led by Mr. Aji Diwakar and Ms Dharani.

We got to learn how malt is used, together with other fine ingredients, to brew
beer through a special process called "Tropical Lagering". Friendly Brewery Tour
Ambassadors took us through their innovative packaging process and shared with
us their interesting beer trivia and facts. Stringent quality control is exercised to
ensure consistency in the brewing of the gold medal winning Tiger Beer. In
addition to Tiger Beer, Asia Pacific Breweries also brews and markets Anchor Beer,
Heineken Beer, Baron's Strong Brew Beer, Guinness and ABC Stout. The one and
a half tour included a presentation on how beer is made, a tour round the brewery
and the packaging hall, and a visit to the souvenir shop.

The brewery tour also allowed us to learn more about the world-acclaimed Tiger
Beer, which had its beginnings in Singapore. Multi-video screens, interactive 4D
animations and other exhibits bring life to Tiger's history. After the walk-through
tour, we were brought to the bar where we were shown how to tap the perfect
beer. We were also treated to freshly tapped Tiger Beer served in a perfectly
chilled mug. Our taste buds were tantalized with the wide variety of quality brews
at the Tiger Tavern and we even picked up tips on how to enjoy our beer.
Everyone also received an exclusive limited edition signature Tiger Beer souvenir.

Tiger Brewery Tour in Singapore is located at 459 Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim. They are
open to visitors from Mondays to Fridays (except public holidays). Two weeks
advance notice is required for groups (minimum of 20 persons) and parents or
guardians must accompany children below 18 years of age. The Four tours are
conducted daily at 10.30am, 2.00pm, 4.00pm and 6.30pm (Prior booking is a
must). With just a nominal fee of S$10.70 (inclusive of 7% GST) per person, visitors
can experience the sights, sounds and smells of beer in the making at the brew
house and packaging hall, sampling the refreshing taste of the brews at the Tiger
Tavern and buying exclusive gifts from the Tiger Souvenir Shop.

Keny’s Thoughts on Shelton Diploma in Mass Condition
Indonesia

My name is Keny, I am from a small island called Batam in
Indonesia. I am proud to be part of Shelton College
International as a diploma student in mass communication,
which is offered by Staffordshire University, U.K. It took me quite
a long time to get into this college. There were a few on-going
requirements from the government such as student pass issues
and of course tuition fees which are always major considerations
for an international student.
I found out about Shelton College from an agency. I thought
that it would be exciting to study overseas and that’s why I
decided to look for information about available colleges which
included Shelton College. There were several things I had to
consider while choosing my college such as the distance to my
hometown, popularity of the college (ranking of colleges based
on people’s perceptions), majors offered fees as mentioned
above and it has to be an internationally certified college. Based
on these criteria and some suggestions from an agent, friends
and relatives, I finally made up my mind. I chose Shelton
College because it has met all of my requirements. Moreover, it
is awarded by SQC as Singapore quality class and it is also
linked with Staffordshire University.
I would like to introduce some others additional features that
Shelton College has, which made me very eager to be in this
college. First of all, the
facilities provided by this college
are excellent such as the library and lab. It’s a place
where students study in a quiet environment with facilities that
allow students to surf online.
There are also newspapers and books available to guide
students. I am happy with all the facilities provided at Shelton
College and the students learn and grow under the watchful
guidance assistance of the librarian and staff members.
The second feature that Shelton College has is its environment.
Shelton College has friendly lecturers and staff, who are always
keen to provide help to students. The campus is secure and clean
so the students do not have to contact with outside threats or
health issues. The population of the students in SCI are mostly
international which is good for me, as I can make a lot of new
friends, socialise with them and learn new things such as various
cultures, languages (other than my own national language and
English, i.e., Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, etc), and other tips which
give me some knowledge about their countries that will benefit
me when I travel overseas.
I like my major very much because I find it to be interesting
practical and theoretical. It involves the students and allows them
to obtain information and do projects related to the movie
making process. It teaches students to research, plan, design, and
learn methods/strategies from books and the Internet.
My interest in the arts has encouraged me to pursue this course.
A good movie for example is an expression of art and it also
makes the audience happy.
Mass communication causes happiness by entertaining
people and by providing education. This is another
reason why my interest has been sustained.

A Note of Gratitude Diploma in BA / TTH

I am Nguyen Hoang Diem Phuong, but all my friends, my teachers and staff in Shelton College International call me Hilary. I will finish my
Diploma in BA and TTH very soon. I wrote this letter to express my deepest gratitude to the school for everything I have enjoyed for last eight
months.

Eight months have passed quickly. I clearly remember my first day in Singapore. The warm
welcome from Ms. Yen and Ms May, while introducing me to everyone in your office and
guiding me through all the necessary things to enjoy a fruitful Shelton experience-- the
study schedule and the regulations in the common destinations in Singapore, have all
been very significant in my successful stay in Singapore. For a girl first time away from
home, everything seemed to be so difficult and I was lonely. I made so many mistakes
which perhaps may have disappointed you. I have always kept in my mind your advice:
“Open your heart”. I gradually became familiar with this new environment. I learnt how to
manage and balance my life, and live along with all my friends and enjoy my new
independent life. Day by day, in class, I learnt helpful knowledge for my future. Each day, I
tried my best so that I would get a chance to improve. During my time in Shelton, I feel
something growing up inside me; my confidence, my ambition and my ability. I will begin
my internship in April, a new step and a new challenge, which I will gain experience in a
working environment.

I hope that afterwards I will have a chance to continue my Advance Diploma in Shelton.

Thanks to you and the principal for giving me a very great opportunity to continue my
studies with a scholarship to study in Singapore. I will try all my best to give value to what
Shelton has given me all this time.

I was attached to Bombay Cafe after completing my eight months of Diploma coursework. I was able to co-operate with my colleagues
to maintain a good rapport with them. The supervisor and manager was very supportive. He motivatived me and provided me with both
theoretical and practical training. My colleagues were there to explain to me in order to celar any doubts that I had. I enjoyed working in
Bombay Cafe and had a pleasant working environment. I was able to work independently without much supervision and was on television
when our restaurant was featured in one TV show on air at their prime time slot.

In Shelton College International, we had quality teachers who provided good coaching and we were
able to learn from them.
Our Industrial Attachment Department's Staff were there to assist and help us while we were waiting for our turn to go for interviews. In
preparing us for the interviews, I was told by Shelton's staff to dress in my best attire, look smart, confident, smile and greet the
interviewer. I was told of the "dos" and "don'ts" for my interviews which I felt benefitted me greatly! I was selected after my first interview
by Bombay Cafe! I was really happy upon being successfully selected by Bombay Cafe as they are a popular restaurant in Singapore!

Shelton having been in the education field for the past 15 years has provided good quality teaching staff and non-teaching staff who really
take good care of their students. They know how to motivate and guide students like us to the next level and I really appreciate them..
not only me.. my family members as well!

My plan after my internship will be to continue my Advanace Diploma in Travel Tourism & Hospitality with Shelton College International!
I believe with the right school, I will excel in my studies and in my working life!

Thoughts
Land Of Blood
Since 1914, the World War I, wars have never been stopped until
now. There are always fear in our lives. Life is just like the wind; it
comes and goes so fast and often may leave a storm in its path- so
is it with war. Mankind has still failed to realize the adverse effects
of war and in the quest to conquer and display their powers, even
today there are battles and wars being fought in many quarters of
the globe.
Everyday, when we read newspapers, watch television, browse the
internet, and listen to the radio, one of the topics generally is
about war. Wars happen everywhere and everyday. It is so
pathetic!
Why must there be wars? Is peace possible?
Imagine so many traumatized and incomplete families- many lives
destroyed because of fighting and wars, dead or injured new born
babies, handicapped people injured in split seconds due to
bombs blasts or gunshots, widowed women and men, orphaned
children- all innocent victims of war and bloodshed.
Hear the dreadful sounds of war! Bombs burst loudly, gunfire
booms and the cries of the moaning fill the air. Many people
scream for help and injured children cry because of starvation or
the lost of their families, people do not have homes and shelters to
live, children cannot get an education because there are no
schools , people cannot pray because their places of worship have
been destroyed. So this is the land of blood and despair!
Events
Go Green!-The GPS Talent Show
The long awaited talent show by the multi- talented students of
Global Prestasi School came on the 25th March 2009. This was a
special moment for our school to show the extent of our
potential. The concert held at 06.50-09.30 PM. The venue,
Krakatau Room 3, Horizon Ballroom. The message was to create
an awareness amongst the parents, family, friends and students
of GPS Bekasi to do their part in saving the environment and
help to realize the adverse effects of global warming and
pollution. The students also have to do their share to save their
environment.
The evening opened with our very own bassist, William Naftali
and the ten minute performance had the audience captivated
and mesmerized- it kick started the show and made the
audience come alive. The beat of the Senior High School Band
had the audience clapping. Hadyus and Ellen, the MC’s of the
evening greeted us and kept the audience attention with their
lively stage presence and it was never a dull moment for the
audience. Ibu Rini said a prayer and spoke to the audience and
the mood was set for more entertainment as the ‘yoyo masters
of 8E’ descended on stage with their fast moving yoyo’s- Trivet,
Desan, Galib, and Adrian’s dexterous fingers flicked the yoyo,
spinning, twisting, and dancing all over the place Their
techniques were unquestionable. All of them are skilled, experts,
and indeed proved themselves as the masters of the yoyo.

The impact of war not only affects one person or one country,
but it affects many people, countries, and the world. It becomes
global! When we know there is war in one country, or in one
place we know that there are numerous victims, for example the
Atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 1945 and now
Gaza’s tragedy and the Sri Lankan battles between the Tamil
Tigers and the Army- who is the sufferer? Innocent civilians of
course! So what can we the concerned citizens do? Help them
with food aid, clothing, medical aid, money, and of course, the
most powerful act to pray- pray for peace.
Are there any advantages of wars? Of course not! Mankind must
become united as one- we, the people must change our attitude
and mindset Isn’t it wonderful that we were created equal by
God? We can surely reduce bloodshed and forget the horrors of
war- so let’s try together. So, give peace a chance for the present
and the future generations. Begin with smile and love for all
humanity – then the message of peace, love and harmony will
bring positive impact to our world.

Of course the greatest hit was the Junior High band- where William
Naftali, the bassist, Juan the pianist, and Bhiga on the drums and
the audience singing , cheering and dancing along to their catchy
music.
The little children from elementary school were all colourfully
dressed like creatures from nature and they acted, sang, and
danced perfectly like little angels and spread of a green earth
perfectly. The Junior High Drama “Global Hell” showed the
negative effects of pollution and the destruction of the Earth it
suggested that we save Earth before it’s too late!
The choir sang melodiously and they asked the
people to heal the world and make it a better place
for the entire Human Race.
This brilliant, magnificent message of “Go Green” will be in our
minds for a long, long time. After a month long practice all the GPS
students, as well as the 6-year old showcased their talents and
performed wonderfully. Well Done GPS- Go Green!

There are times when first impressions are not the most significant ones. s. Everyy
individual has the right to look and dress in whatever way they choose to andnd everyy
person also has the right to judge it. So it is natural when you see someone lookingngg
suspicious that, you will feel suspicious about him, too. As mentioned above,, people
