Happy summer yall! I sincerely hope that yall are having a super awesome fantastic summer filled with adventure and service. A special S/O to our very own Roshni Chandwani for being elected as one of eleven Key Club International Trustees for the 2013-2014 term. Shell be representing the Eastern Canada, Pacific NW, and Kentucky-Tennessee Districts. When shes not racking up those frequent flier miles, feel free to congratulate her! As school starts back up again and the struggle becomes too real to ignore, remember that Key Club is still happening and events are still there for you to attend. Also, if you know any freshmen, point them to the best organization on campus (cough cough Key Club). Honestly, Key Club is the bomb diggity, and everyone should know about it. Spread the word! Letter from the PRESIDENT

Dear Key Clubbers,
Happy Summer! I hope everyone is having bunches of fun and keeping safe. Summer is a great time for not only relaxing but also for serving! Because of everyones hectic schedule during the school year, finding time for volunteering may be difficult. During summer, we have more time and energy to serve our community. Although we dont want to admit it, summer sometimes gets a little boring. What better way to pass long summer days than by hanging out with friends and making a positive impact? For the Falls of KEY CLUB Newsletter month of August we have Cypress a plethora events to make sure everyone is keeping busy! Science Olympiad at our school is hosting an ultimate Frisbee tournament August 10th and you will be helping out at the concession stand. This should be an exciting event and its going to help out a great activity at our school! On August 15th, we have Freshman Orientation where you will be helping out at various places around our school and guiding the incoming freshman where their classes will be the upcoming school year. K2 Parents Night out is Saturday, August 17th, where you will be having tons of fun with awesome special-needs kids. I hope yall take advantage of summer events and strive to serve year round!

Bingo Fun in the Sun

By Tri Pham
My favorite event of the summer is without a doubt w hen I volunteered at Grace Care Center to socialize and have fun with senior citizens. I came to the event not having a clue of what to do, because I really did not have any real experience with seniors before. Besides, they were total strangers, so I was very nervous. The volunteering event was to have fun with senior citizens by serving coffee, and playing bingo with them. Bingo is literally Greek to me, so I did not fully understand the concept of the game or how it was played. However, I sat down at the table with a senior citizen. Her name was Etta. She was in a wheelchair, and I assisted her to the left side of the bingo table. She asked me to get her bingo card and chips, not only for her, but for myself as well. Her eyes were impaired so she could only see one card. However, I got 3 so I can watch 2 to improve our chance of winning. I told her that I did not know how to play bingo. Then, Etta just taught me how to play, and carefully listen to each letter followed by a number so I can fill the spot. I aided her in pointing out the numbers so she can put the chips in the space. At the end of the first game, we didnt win, but she does not seem disappointed. W hen cleared our chips off the cards, she asked me if I wanted water. Even though she is older than me, she showed me the utmost respect and kindness that I would have never expected. I did not want any drinks, but instead I went and asked the nurse for water for Etta. Eventually, Etta and I won the second round, but we were only playing to fill a certain column on the card. I assisted her to the winning table, and she picked out a batch of little bars of pastries and w ent back to our bingo table. As soon as we got back, Etta opened the batch and asked me if I wanted any. I respectfully declined and offered her to have some first. Then she asked me to bring it to the nurses who are hosting the event to share it with them. At this point, I brought it to them and shared Ettas winnings. At the end of the Bingo event, Etta said thank you for helping her out with Bingo. I replied No problem. However, in my mind, I was perfectly sure that she had helped me more than I ever did. I realized the value of this tremendous experience and kindness of the senior citizens in our country and I was thankful to experience it.

This past weekend, I had the amazing opportunity to volunteer for a wonderful organization. Habitat for Humanity helps people in need by building homes for family that needs them the most. Habitat for Humanity is made up of parts that help achieve their goal. The first one is that people could have the option to donate a old house of theirs and the workers for Habitat will use every little thing that is useful in the house. Like cabinets, ovens, curtains etc. and some of the stuff they dont need at the moment then goes to Restore. I had the opportunity to help out at a near by Restore as well and it is amazing the things you could find in there. And last but not least, there is the part where volunteers get together to help build a house. We got to help out on a small 3-bedroom house. The idea of the house one day being what saves a family is what made us work hard to do our best. We were divided into groups and each group got to work on a different activity. The Cy-Falls group ended up together and we were assigned to paint the exterior of the house. We first watched our leader show us how to paint properly with a paintbrush. We learned and then went off and collected our supplies and went to work. We painted the rims and corners of the house with white paint and then some of use had to us ladders to paint the upper part near the roof of the house. We worked in the hot sun and we made sure to hydrate ourselves every hour. In the end, since we were painting, we had to help and clean all of the brushes. It felt like forever until we were done and in the end it was all worth it even though we got our clothes dirty with paint. I was proud of our work and was more than happy to help out. We helped our community and that is what Key Club is all about.

Every year in Key Club, the Governor of the Texas-Oklahoma District focuses his time and energy on one particular issue. This issue is called the Governors Project. This year, our Governor, Luke Broussard, has chosen bullying as his focus issue for his Governors Project: Kickn Bullyn to the Curb. Since we were young, weve been told that bullying is bad. But yet, thousands upon thousands still claim theyre bullied every year. Why is that? Are they lying? Are they crazy? NO. Bullying is a very real and present problem in schools today, and no one is exempt from this. Everyone is affected by bullying in some shape or fashion, and thats an unavoidable fact of life. What can we do about this? Well, stop being a bystander and tell someone, and participate in anti-bullying activities. Together, we can KICK BULLYING TO THE CURB!

Do you like ice cream? More specifically, a DQ Blizzard? Well, on August 8, 2013, you can eat ice cream and donate to Childrens Miracle Network Hospitals! For seven years, DQ has set aside one day that one dollar from all the Blizzards sold that day will go to Childrens Miracle Network hospitals around the US. The Childrens Miracle Network is an organization very dear to the heart of Key Club International, and all you have to do to support it is to eat ice cream! The closest participating DQ is in Tomball, but if you got a group of friends together, that drive can be super fun and all for a good cause! Even if you dont think you can make it, you can just join the Miracle Treat Day event on Facebook and DQ will donate a dollar (up to $50,000).

With only $1.80, you could save a mother and child from getting tetanus! Key Club and Kiwanis are teaming up with UNICEF to end this preventable disease that afflicts many in third-world countries. To find out more ways you can help, visit theeliminateproject.org.
