Learning outcomes II. III. IV. Prior knowledge mass of objects. Science process skills Measuring and using numbers. State tools for measuring mass. State the standard unit for mass in the metric system. Measure the mass of an object using the correct technique. Record the measurement using standard unit.

Step/ Phase Orientation (5 minutes)

Content The mass of the packet of crackers is 50 gram.

Teaching and Learning Activities 1. Teacher begins the lesson by showing pupils an object, a packet of crackers that is wrapped in a black plastic.

Notes/ Remarks Science process skills: Observing, Communicating, predicting

We use beam balance, lever balance, kitchen scale and bathroom scale to measure the mass of objects. Units for mass are kilogram (kg), gram (g) and milligram (mg).

2. Teacher asks the pupils to guess how much the mass of the object is. 3. The packet of crackers will be given to the pupil who guesses correctly. 4. Teacher asks questions: a. What is meant by mass? Answer: Mass is the amount of substance an object has. For example, the amount of crackers per packet. b. What is the standard unit of mass in the metric system? Answer: Kilogram (kg). c. What is the unit of mass that is used to measure the crackers? 5. Teacher introduces the topic of the lesson today which is Lesson 5. Measuring mass. Values: Dare to try ABM: A packet of crackers. Thinking skills: Relating

Eliciting Ideas (10 minutes)

1. Pupils are divided into six or seven in group. 2. Teacher asks each group to take out one Science textbook, Science workbook and one exercise book. 3. Each group has to compare all the mass of the books and guess which book is smaller or bigger. 4. They are given five minutes to compare the books and arranging them from the smallest to the biggest mass. 5. Then, each group leader will write down the sequences of the mass of books in ascending order on the whiteboard.

Restructuring of Ideas ( 15 minutes)

Units for mass are kilogram (kg), gram (g) and milligram (mg). 1 kg = 1000 g 1g = 1000 mg

1. Teacher gives early exposure about measuring mass by using powerpoint. 2. Teacher distributes one kitchen scale and

table 1 to each group and shows them the Thinking skills: correct ways to use the kitchen scale. 3. They have to measure the mass of the books by using kitchen scale and write Manipulative skills: Comparing and contrasting, sequencing

After the pupils understand and know the way to measure the mass of an object, teacher gives each group chance to change their answers at eliciting ideas step before. 6. Teacher discusses the findings with the pupils and encourages them to compare their findings with other groups.

Application (20 minutes)

Exercise A Plus Science Year 4 Book A, page 69, 70.

1. Teacher asks pupils to take out their workbooks and go through the questions in the workbook together with the pupils. 2. Then, teacher asks the pupils to do the exercise inside the workbook. 3. Pupils are given 15 minutes to complete their work. 4. Teacher discusses the correct answers
