In Search of Japans Hidden Christians
A Story of Suppression, Secrecy and Survival
John Dougill
From the time the rst Christian missionary arrived in Japan in 1549 to when
a nationwide ban was issued in 1614, over 300,000 Japanese were converted
to Christianity. A vicious campaign of persecution forced the faithful to go
underground. For seven generations, Hidden Christiansor Kirishitanpreserved a
faith that was strictly forbidden on pain of death. Illiterate peasants handed down
the Catholicism that had been taught to their ancestors despite having no Bible or
contact with the outside world.
Just as remarkably, descendants of the Hidden Christians continue to this day to
practice their own religion, refusing to rejoin the Catholic Church. Why? And what is
it about Christianity that is so antagonistic to Japanese culture? In Search of Japans
Hidden Christians is an attempt to answer these questions. A journey in both space
and time, In Search of Japans Hidden Christians recounts a clash of civilizationsof
East and Westthat resonates to this day, and offers insights about the tenacity of
belief and unchanging aspects of Japanese culture.
John Dougill studied modern languages at Leeds in the UK and
did a postgraduate course in Slavonic Studies at Oxford University.
In 1986 he went to Japan as a visiting lecturer at Kanazawa
University. He completed a Ph.D. in English Literature, and moved
to Ryukoku University in Kyoto, where he now works as professor
of British Studies.

Japanese Tales of
Mystery and Imagination
Edogawa Rampo
Patricia Welch, foreword
Japanese Tales of Mystery and Imagination contains
nine bloodcurdling tales by the man widely regarded
as the father of Japanese mystery writing.
These tales include the strange story of a quadruple
amputee and his perverse wife; the record of a man
who creates a mysterious chamber of mirrors and
discovers hidden pleasures within; and the morbid
confessions of a maniac who envisions a career of
foolproof psychological murders. Lucid and packed
with suspense, the stories of Edogawa Rampo have
enthralled Japanese readers for over half a century.
Edogawa Rampo (Hirai Taro, 1894-1965) was the rst
modern writer of mysteries in Japan, and long-time
president of the Japan Mystery Writers Club. Rampo
derived his pen name from the Japanese pronunciation
of Edgar Allan Poe, his literary muse.

Yuko-chan and the Daruma Doll
The Adventures of a Blind Japanese Girl Who Saves Her Village
Sunny Seki
Yuko-chan and the Daruma Doll, a gorgeous book by author/illustrator Sunny Seki, takes
readers on a journey into ancient Japan and the story behind the famous Daruma Doll.
Yuko-chan, an adventurous blind orphan, is able to do amazing things. She confronts a
temple burglar in the dead of night, and crosses treacherous mountain passes to deliver
food to hungry people. During her travels, Yuko-chan trips and tumbles down a snowy
cliff. She discovers a strange thing as she waits for help: her tea gourd, regardless of
how she drops it, always lands right-side-up. The tea has frozen in the bottom of the
gourd! Inspired by this, she creates the famous Daruma doll toy, which rights itself when
tippeda true symbol of resilience.
Thanks to Yuko-chans invention, the villagers are able to earn a living and feed
themselves by selling the dolls. Yuko-chan never gave up, no matter the obstacles she
faced, and the Daruma doll is a charming reminder of the power of perserverence.
Sunny Seki is the award-winning author and illustrator of The
Last Kappa of Old Japan and The Tale of the Lucky Cat. A native of tt
Japan, Sunny studied illustration at Pasadena Art Center of Design.

Japans Master Gardens
Lessons in Space and Environment
Stephen Manseld
No two Japanese gardens are ever the same. Each is inimitable, yet embodies
commonalities of design and aesthetic taste. Each nds the space for innovation within
a tradition that benets from a thousand years of applied knowledge. Japans Master
Gardens explores the ingenuity and range of Japanese landscaping, from the self-imposed
connes of courtyard designs to the open expanses of the stroll garden.
Japans Master Gardens illustrates how, through the ministrations of generations of
gardeners, original landscapes have maintained their mastery and demonstrates how
contemporary landscaping draws from tradition, making ancient gardens relevant to the
lives of people in the twenty-rst century.
This beautifully illustrated book takes readers on an exploration of the outward forms,
underpinning principles, complex use of metaphor and allusion, and beauty and depth
that set the Japanese garden apart.
Stephen Manseld, an author and freelance photojournalist based
in Japan, has contributed to over 60 magazines, newspapers and
journals worldwide. His books include Japanese Stone Gardens:
Origins, Meaning, Form and Tokyo: A Cultural and Literary History.
A specialist in the eld, he has visited over two hundred gardens
in Japan, written extensively on the topic and designed a Japanese
garden of his own.

The Craft of Gardens
The Classic Chinese Text on Garden Design
Ji Cheng
Alison Hardie, translator
Zhong Ming, photographer
Maggie Keswick, foreword
Ji Chengs great work on garden design, the Yuan Ye or Craft of Gardens, was originally
published around 1631 and is the earliest manual of landscape gardening in the Chinese
tradition. This is the rst complete English translation of Ji Chengs seminal work.
This delightful book provides not only insights into Chinese gardening but also a unique
perspective on Chinese culture and society in the late Ming dynasty. Full notes by the
translator explain obscure points and introduce relevant aspects of Chinese culture,
while an introduction by Maggie Keswick sets the book rmly in its historical context.
Illustrations include not only Ji Chengs original diagrams but also historical paintings and
contemporary photographs of a number of outstanding gardens in the part of East China
where Ji Cheng lived and worked.
Ji Cheng was a practicing garden designer in the rst half of the 17th century. He
designed gardens for several well-known individuals in the late Ming dynasty, who
supported the original publication of this book.
Alison Hardie, a graduate of Oxford and Edinburgh Universities, began to translate The
Craft of Gardens in the 1980s. She is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University s
of Leeds, and internationally known as a scholar of Chinese garden history.
Zhong Ming is an artist whose work has been exhibited in many countries including
China, France, the UK, Japan and Sweden. He divides his time between China, France
and the UK.

Make Shift Happen
Change How You Look by Changing How You Think
Dean Dwyer
Dean Dwyer was a vegetarian for nineteen years who worked out intensely four to ve
days a weekand still couldnt get rid of his belly fat. When he found himself facing a
very uncertain future, Dwyer asked a counterintuitive question: What if eating healthy is
actually making me fat?
With that one simple question, a paradigm shift like no other was unleashed. Suddenly,
nothing was sacred ground. Everything was open for debate. In an honest and at times
humorous portrayal of his own personal journey, Dwyer takes us on a coming-of-age tale
about weight loss and its intersection with truth. What he discovers leads to an evolution

Learn to utilize meditation and breathing for a healthy mind and body
Quiet Sitting
The Daoist Approach for a Healthy Mind and Body
Chen Yingning
Jiang Weiqiao
Jing Gong (quiet sitting) has been shrouded in mysticism since it traveled out of
the Far East and across the shores to the West. Along the way, new schools of
thought developed and the essential keys to the simple practice that is Jing Gong
had been lost.
Quiet Sitting: The Daoist Approach for a Healthy Mind and Body is a combination y
of two translated texts from two of the most famous Jing Gong pioneers in China
during the early 20th century. This no-frills handbook is essential to anyone who
is interested in the Eastern technique of breathing for a healthy mind and body.
Free of esoteric words and phrases, this book offers beginner students a basic, yet
powerful, knowledge of the breath: where it comes from, how it is distributed
throughout the body, and how to harness it to heal from within.
Whether you are looking for alternative ways to improve your physical health,
maintain your mental well being, or curious about breathing meditations, Quiet
Sitting provides the basic tools needed to get started. g
Jiang Weiqiao (18731958) is famous for his inuential book Yinshizis Method
of Quiet Sitting which he wrote after curing his pulmonary tuberculosis through g
the practice of Jing Gong. His other major work is General Discourse on Buddhist
Studies.
Chen Yingning (18801969), Daoist name Yuandunzi, spent over sixty years as a
devoted scholar of Daoist teachings and gained considerable expertise on Daoist
breathing methods. In the 1930s, he worked as chief editor of Daoist Virtues Bi-
weekly and y Daoists Monthly, and wrote multiple volumes on Daoism. After 1957
he served as Vice Director, and later, Director of the Chinese Daoist Association.

The Blueprint of Modern Self-Defense
Adopting the Martial Way of Life
Burton Richardson
In The Blueprint For Modern Self-Defense, Burton Richardson brings his science-based
philosophy of practical self-defense training to you. A leading instructor in JKD
Concepts, Filipino Kali, Indonesian Silat and Thai kickboxing, a black belt in Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu, and an elite level MMA coach, Richardson combines ancient warrior arts with
the modern approach of Mixed Martial Arts so the entire gamut of street self-defense
is covered.
From gun and knife defense, to street kickboxing, street clinching, takedowns, and
street ground work, nothing in the book is theoreticaleverything has been repeatedly
tested at 100% intensity against top MMA athletes to ensure that the techniques
will work in a real world situation. Burtons emphasis on only using what works goes
beyond ghting prociency. You may never have to use your self-defense skills in the
street, but the principles of success you learn through practical training can be used
every day of your life.
Burton Richardsons main instructor was Dan Inosanto, the man Bruce Lee chose
to carry on his art and philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. Richardson became an instructor
after a decade of intense training. He traveled the globe learning martial arts and
now teaches seminars worldwide. He writes a monthly column for Inside Kung-Fu
magazine, is the author of three books, and has worked as the ght choreographer for
lms such as Seven. He lives in Hawaii with his family.

Origami Magic Kit
Amazing Paper Folding Tricks, Puzzles and Illusions
Steve Biddle
Megumi Biddle
Using origami to transform a single sheet of paper into a seemingly impossible shape
is a type of magic in and of itself. Throw in a healthy dose of magic tricks, puzzles and
illusions, and all of a sudden, the magic of paper-folding has created a magician worthy
of oohs and ahhs!
Paper-folding experts Steve and Megumi Biddle reveal all the tricks of the trade right
here in the Origami Magic Kit, which includes four types of origami models: tt
Amazing Tricks, such as the cunning Magic Box, from which objects disappear before
your very eyes.
Perplexing Puzzles like Pyramids and Stringwhere you remove a string from a card
without tearing or cutting it.
Impossible Illusions which involve making money disappear inside a paper purse... and
then reappear again!
Mysterious Transformations like the Mbius Strip, which turns a simple strip of paper
into two curiously interlocking loops with just a well-placed tear!
Prepare to astound your friends and family in no time at all as you perform stunts that
professional magicians doall through the magic of origami!
Steve Biddle is an author, entertainer and origami expert. He is a member of the most
famous magical society in the world, The Magic Circle, holding the degree of Associate of
The Inner Magic Circle with Silver Star.
Megumi Biddle is a graphic artist, designer and illustrator with a long-standing interest
in papercrafts and doll-making. She is also a highly skilled silhouette artist and has cut
out the proles of many well-known celebrities.
Steve and Megumi have performed their Paper Magic act across the world, having
performed in Europe, Australia, the United States and Japan. They are the authors of
Origami Inspired by Japanese Prints from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The unexpected gift of a favored bottle of shiraz from her husband leads to the
adventure of a lifetime for Karen Pond and her familymoving from rural Maine
to the largest city in the world: Tokyo, Japan.
Getting Genki in Japan is a collection of illustrated essays and musings of a Down

and befuddled (and back again) to (somewhat) wise, these narratives recount a
journey of cultural discoveries, experiences and the follies of a newcomer to Japan;
including (mis)identifying food, (mis)pronouncing Japanese, (mis)pantomiming for
necessities, and nally guring out how to ush the Japanese toilet!
Karen Pond worked as a catalog

her culture shock with essays that appeared
in iNTOUCH Magazine, Tokyo Families
