Instruction Manual Form 5473 January 1999

Design CVX-S

Design CVX-S Sparger

Introduction
Scope of Manual
This instruction manual includes installation, maintenance, and operation information for the CON-TEKR Design CVX-S Sparger. Only personnel qualified through training or experience should install, operate, and maintain a Design CVX-S sparger. If you have any questions about these instructions, contact your Fisher Controls sales office or sales representative before proceeding.

Description
The Design CVX-S sparger (figure 1) is installed in order to provide backpressure for a turbine bypass valve, to limit steam line velocity, to protect condenser tubes, and to reduce overall turbine bypass system noise. The Design CVX-S sparger is installed on the condenser wall or in the turbine exhaust duct after the steam turbine and upstream of the condenser.

Principle of Operation
The Design CVX-S sparger is custom designed to match the turbine bypass valve outlet steam piping and be inserted into the condenser or turbine bypass duct. The Design CVX-S sparger is designed to provide the required drilled flow area to take the final pressure drop from the turbine bypass valve outlet to the condenser.

Reducers and expanders are typically not recommended due to the potential for entrained water in the system in this type of application. The Design CVX-S sparger may be installed directly on the turbine bypass valve outlet when feedforward temperature control is being used. No undrained low points should exist upstream of the Design CVX-S sparger that are conducive to water hammer.

Installation
Before installation, all piping to the Design CVX-S sparger must be blown clean, so that no particles, such as welding beads, dirt or other foreign matter, are left in the pipeline. Keep foreign matter away from the line openings while preparing the Design CVX-S sparger for installation. Cleanliness of the upstream piping is critical. Debris in the piping can damage the Design CVX-S sparger and severely restrict steam flow. Verify that the Design CVX-S sparger is clean inside. Arrange a lifting sling around the Design CVX-S sparger to safely insert it into the pipe opening.

Installation
The Design CVX-S sparger can be mounted in any orientation subject to space limitations for piping layout and insertion of the sparger into the condenser.

Piping Considerations
Upstream piping should be the same diameter and wall thickness as the Design CVX-S inlet connection.

Maintenance
Servicing
The Design CVX-S sparger has no serviceable parts. It is normally welded in line and not removed unless it requires replacement due to damage or wear.

Troubleshooting
Flanged ConnectionsFor high temperature applications, grease the flange connection bolts with a high temperature thread lubricant. Install flange gaskets and connection bolts as per accepted practices and tighten securely. Re-tighten bolts after the Design CVX-S sparger has been pressurized. Do not expose the Design CVX-S sparger to undue stresses by installing it in bent pipes or flanges. Welded ConnectionsWelding procedures should be in accordance with the applicable codes and the base materials. For preheat, welding electrodes, and

Parts Ordering
There are no serviceable spare parts for this unit. Each Design CVX-S sparger is assigned a serial number that can be found on the unit. Refer to the serial number when contacting your Fisher Controls sales office or sales representative for technical assistance.
