For four years he lived every day with the fear that immigratiori agents would find him, and he would suddenly have to leave his work, his home, his friends, interrupt his children's schooling and uproot his family. One nighi a neighbor warned him to leave his home immediately because immigration had discovered them. His pregnant wife quickly packed a suitcase and started crying. Then, there was a knock at the door. Immigration agents had fmally come to get them. This time, however, the illegal aliens were in Mexico, and they were U.S. citizens.
Robert David Newton, his wife, Laura, and their children had entered Mexico with tourist visas and illegally remained in Ciudad Juarez near the U.S. border, Newton said. The members of his family were not the only undocumented U.S. citizens living
there, Newton said.
Before his move, Newton found out that as a missionary, -he couldn't get legal resi
dence in Mexico.
"We knew it was illegal but we felt compelled to do it, anyway, to accomplish God's work," said Newton, a Spanish-speaking minister for The Christian Churches. However, they lived in fear. "We didn't know what would happen if they (immigra tion agents) would take our property or put me in jail. It was fear of the unknown,"
he said.
As it turned out, Mexico's Delegaci6n de Servicios Migratorios didn't jail him, gave the Newtons 10 days to leave and didn't confiscate their property. "They didn't even charge me a fine or a mordida (bribe)," he said. After reluctantly leaving Mexico, the Newtons returned to Atlanta. No longer an "un derground minister," he's initiating his evangelical work to Hispanics at The Chris*
tian Church on Cameron Street near Grant Park.
In Grant Park, most of the Hispanics he comes into contact with are undocumented, and because of his experience, he has "a real compassion for the illegals here." He also "can understand those who leave their families and go to a foreign country legally or illegally."
