LETTER

Welcome to the all-new STUDIOS magazine!

Were still committed to bringing you great studio ideas
and inspiration, but now, as our tagline says, were also
exploring the creative lives of artists and makers. If youre
a creative type or just aspire to be a creative type, the
new STUDIOS is just what you need to learn about how

Our new studio features are even

bigger and better, with fun photos
and helpful captions. Youll also find
that weve added a Get the Look to
the end of each studio. If you enjoy a
particular artists space, well give you
the main color palette and a few of
the key design elements so that you
can work a little magic in your own
creative place.
Weve also added a new photo
story feature, in which we take a look
at a day in the life of an artist. In this
issue, well follow mixed-media artist
(and CLOTH PAPER SCISSORS columnist)
Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, who lives in
bustling Times Square in New York
City. Well also take a look at a New
York quilt store that is whistling its
own tune and creating custom NYC
fabric for their customers. And finally,
the cherry on the sundae is our new
closing column by Jennifer Bertrand
HGTVp Design Star!
We hope youll enjoy traveling to
fabulous New York City with us and
find loads of new ideas and inspiration.
As always, our magazine is filled with
the beautiful, practical, and inspiring
spaces of our readers. If youd like us
to consider featuring you in the next
issue of STUDIOS, check out our new
submission guidelines on page 142.
Cheers,

other artists and makers work and live.

MADE BY HAND may give a nod to traditional crafting

techniques, but the 26 projects in this curated collection
are crisp, clean, and modern. In this book, author Lena
Corwin brings together a group of experts to share their
knowledge of such areas as fabric printing, sewing, knitting,
crochet, braiding, fabric origami, embroidery, and dyeing.
There are projects for the home, your kids, and even your
pets. The 385 detailed illustrations, along with excellent
step-by-step photographs and clear instructions, make each
project tempting and approachable.

In BROOKLYN MAKERS, Jennifer Causey offers a glimpse into

the less familiar side of New York Citythe slower, more
deliberate side that is populated with crafters and makers
who take the time to create beautiful (and sometimes
delicious) handmade goods. This books eclectic mix of
30 up-and-coming artists and artisans includes jewelers,
builders, bakers, ceramicists, designers, florists, candy
makers, and more. With the artisans stories told in shortbut-sweet interviews and their spaces highlighted in
stunning photographs, Causey provides a nice taste of what
Brooklyn has to offer. Just dont be surprised if you find
yourself wanting to take a trip to the Big Apple in search of
the whole darn feast.
