1. Description of the EPIRB
Cospas-Sarsat is a satellite system designed to provide alert and location data to assist search
and rescue (SAR) operations, using spacecraft and ground facilities to detect and locate the
signals of distress beacons operating on 406 Megahertz (MHz) or 121.5MHz. The position of the
distress and other related information is forwarded by the responsible Cospas-Sarsat Mission
Control Centre (MCC) to the appropriate national SAR authorities. Its objective is to support all
organizations in the world with responsibility for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, whether at
sea, in the air, or on land.
406MHz Satellite EPIRB is used to Cospas-Sarsat system in the Global Maritime Distress and
Safety System(GMDSS) such as Fig1. It is a global distress warning system operating on an
exclusive identification and distress signal in an emergency.

Signal processing procedure from EPIRB

1) EPIRB on
2) EPIRB transmits a 0.44-second-long message carrying the vessel identification code and/or
serial number at around every 50 seconds.
3) Satellite which accepts a message from 406MHz EPIRB retransmits the message in memory
to any available LUT in the satellite's view.
4) The signal which received by LUT is processed to determine the beacon location and the
information is sent to MCC.
5) The signal through the homing frequency 121.5MHz is also provided to SAR aircraft units.

The emergency signal can be pick up anywhere and quickly positioned and identified to within
1 nautical mile.
SEP-406 meets requirement for Cospas-Sarsat satellite EPIRB (Class II) and operates with two
transmitter as follows;

UHF band 406.025MHz frequency to position and identify the signal through the
Cospas-Sarsat satellite.

VHF band 121.5MHz aeronautical distress frequency to facilitate the final search by the
"Homing" procedure.
SEP-406 can be used on board vessels of any size with the following advantages :
Easy installation and storage (Optimal design)
Easy and safe operation

Easy handling at emergency state (Ergonomic design)

Incorrect operation is protected multi switching system. (Water Activation Switch, Magnet
Switch)

Float free construction to be release at depth of 4 to 12 ft, and rise to surface.

Housing made of bright orange ABS plastic with a high resistance, Watertight at 1 bar.
Manual Switch for self-test.

4. Installation and Operation
1) Fix to the top bridge deck with 4 screws.
2) Clear area to allow the beacon to rise to the surface, should the ship sink. Watch rigging,
antenna or shroud that could build obstacles.
3) Easy access to the crew for manual operation.
4) Fix the EPIRB on a mounter
- Front label of beacon should be seen
- Take care not to touch the locking pin because the beacon activate automatically in the
water.
5) Fasten the hydrostatic release system.

5. Operation
1) Automatic operation

Remove the hydrostatic release system and separate the beacon from the mounter.
Fasten the beacon with rope and throw it into the water.
Check the correct operation(flashing light).

2) Manual operation (Fig.2)

Separate the beacon from the mounter.

Carry the beacon to a tranquil place.
Remove the locking pin and the switch will automatically go to the EMERGENCY position.
The red LED indicator for power will be on indicating that the beacon is operating.
To stop transmission, turn the switch to OFF position and remount the locking pin.

3) Test (Fig.2)

Separate the beacon from the mounter.

Carry the beacon to a tranquil place.
Turn the switch to the TEST position.
The red LED indicator will be on for 5 seconds and then blink during 10 seconds.
While testing, one burst for test is transmitted on 406.025MHz and then the test signal is
transmitted continuously on 121.5MHz.
To avoid transmitting actual distress signal on 121.5MHz, it is not allowed that the test is
continued over than 30 seconds.

SEP-406

SAMYUNG ENC
6. Maintenance and Coding
1) Every 6 month
Check the expiry date of the hydrostatic release system.
Check that the beacon is easily removed and replaced on the mounter.
Check that 406-TX and 121-TX LED indicators blink periodically a few seconds after turn
the switch to the TEST position.
Turn the switch to the OFF position and remount the beacon.
Warning:
To avoid transmitting actual distress signal on 121.5MHz, it is not allowed that the test is
continued over than 50 seconds.
When the LED indicators blink 20 times per minute regularly, the beacon have no
malfunction.
If the blink is not periodically, the beacon may have a defect. In this case, contact the
manufacturer or its authorized service network.
2) Every year
Annual radio inspection should be taken by the governmental navigation inspector.
3) Every 2 year
The extended test including waterproof check and seal replacement can be performed by
one of service agents authorised by the manufacturer.
The term of validity of an automatic hydrostatic release system is 2 years.
4) Every 4 year
Test performed by one of the authorised service agents. The battery pack must be
replaced and the beacon operation checked thoroughly.
The term of validity of a battery pack is 4 years.
5) Every 5 year
Shore-based maintenance of all satellite EPIRBs should be carried out in accordance
with these guidelines at intervals specified by the flag Administration and not exceeding
5 years. It should be tested by organization according to CIRCULAR/MSC/Circ.1039
Warning:
The battery replacem ent m ust be perform ed only by the authorised agent w ho w ill dispose of it.
Do not open beacon
Do not charge battery
Do not placing near fire
Do not expose to temperature over 70
Do not short circuit
6) Coding
For a coding of program, connect RS232C communication module with SEP-406 EPIRB
and turn the switch TEST position. Then input a code program within 5 seconds after the
LED indicator turn on.
The new code program will be coded in the EEPROM and after 10 seconds, the beacon
will operate with the new code.

How to keep operation manual and the registration card

1. This booklet must follow the radio beacon in all its successive assignment.
2. It must be kept on board with the other safety documents and be shown on request to the
Maritime Authorities.
3. On termination of each periodic inspection carried out by the service station and authorized by
the manufacturer, this booklet must be completed in and signed.
4. After any periodic or unexpected inspection, the booklet has to be signed by the Maritime
Authorities.
5. In case of a new assignment of the radio beacon or change of vessel's name or owner,
advise the relevant Registration Service and the manufacturer's authorized agent so that
maintenance may be continued.
Registration:
The code programmed into the beacon and imprinted on the registration card will not be
changed during the life of the unit. It is very important that the registration details held by the
SAR authorities are up-to-date.
Upon purchase of the SEP-406 EPIRB, the end-user should complete the registration card and
mail it to the relevant Registration Services.

SEP-406

SAMYUNG ENC

Recommendation

In the case where the beacon has been activated but the vessel and its crew are no longer in
danger, it is very important not to disarm the beacon until the SAR services have been informed
by whatever means possible that the distress situation is over.
Beacon activation initiates a world-wide Cospas-Sarsat alert with rapid deployment of costly
rescue operations and turning off the beacon too early could cause great disruption to SAR
operations which may already have begun.

Warning

If the beacon transmits other than in an emergency, inform the local SAR services of the false
alarm to cancel the research operations and stop it immediately.
It is unlawful to transmit a distress signal unless an emergency exists. Turning this unit on
initiates a signal on the international distress frequencies. Any unjustified alert will involve
penalties.
