SpecialEffect helps Mitch

Thanks to all the work that gaming charity, SpecialEffect, have done they have been able to help a young man named Mitch. Mitch has cerebral palsy which makes it difficult for him to use the triggers on the back of his controller which would have a huge impact on what games you are able to play. SpecialEffect have remapped the triggers to two small switches under the controller, and attached it to a heavy duty clinical mounting to reduce the effect of the tremor in his arms. This has allowed Mitch to be back on a level playing field with his friends and he is able to now give as good as he gets! Mitch was ecstatic with the results saying It puts the fun back if you can be just as good as someone else. You can see how happy Mitch is in the video at www.train2game-news.co.uk We at Train2Game are very happy to support SpecialEffect as much as we can and will continue to do so to keep helping people like Mitch.

TIGA met with OFT to discuss mobile market

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) held a roundtable meeting with games industry representatives, including TIGA board members, to discuss a set of principles directed to businesses involved in web and app-based games and to clarify their obligations under consumer protection law. The meeting was held at the OFTs offices on July 29 and took place under Chatham House rules. The OFT plan to publish these principles as part of a public consultation exercise in September 2013. The OFT is engaged in a project to ensure that consumers, especially children and other vulnerable persons, are protected from misleading and aggressive commercial practices in web and app based games. TIGA board members and other representatives from games industry companies were able to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the OFTs proposed principles. Issues discussed included: the need for a global approach: if UK consumers are to be effectively protected then the OFT should work with its counterparts in the EU, the USA and across the globe to adopt a common approach to the principles governing commercial practices in web and app based games; what constitutes a childrens game; the provision by platform holders of a childrens category in their online stores; the need for a consistent approach in the guidelines governing commercial practices in the physical and digital worlds; and the need to provide consumers with sufficient information so that they can make informed decisions whilst avoiding information overload. Dr Richard Wilson, TIGA CEO, said, TIGA supports the OFTs intention to produce best practice guidelines to enable the industry to comply with the Consumer Protection (from Unfair Trading) Regulations 2008. TIGA will continue to work with its

A spokesman for gamers social media network Pixwoo.com, which commissioned the research, said The image most people have of a gamer is usually a young boy, holed up for hours in end in their bedroom, only stopping the game for food, drink and toilet breaks. But these results show that the stereotype couldnt be more wrong. Not only are women just as likely to be gamers as men, but we are talking about fully grown adults who work, have a family and are in a relationship. The study, of 2,000 Brits who consider themselves a gamer, found that they will spend a total of 12 hours and 32 minutes playing on some kind on console each week but researchers also found that the hobby isnt always good news for relationships, with the average gamer rowing with their partner twice a week over their pastime. More than one in twenty of those in relationships say it is a constant source of their rows while 15 per cent have broken up with someone because of it. More than three quarters even admitted they dont think they will ever grow out of their love for computer games. While the games are usually switched off by 11pm, gamers have stayed up as late as 1.12am engrossed in their contests. They will also spend around four hours queuing for a new game at a midnight store opening once a year. The study also found that the average video game fan has five online friends in the gaming community, with 29 per cent saying they have met at least one of those faceto-face and while a third say they are most like to play games with real-life friends in the same room, almost a quarter tend to play with friends remotely. Microsoft have also announced that each console can be used as a development kit, much like the way that Apple devices can be used as such. Heres the official statement from Xbox corporate VP, Marc Whitten: Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means selfpublishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. Well have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August. Whitten also told Kotaku that dev kit functionality will not be available at launch, but will be added at a later date. This dispells all concerns of the accessibility and exposure of indie game on Xbox One, Whitten promises they will live on the Xbox Live Marketplace with the major titles. Whitten explains Of course there will be different pivots inside of that. There will be everything from what are we curating, kind of like spotlight content, to the normal discoverability stuff like recommendations, whats trending, whats got a lot of engagement on the platform. But you shouldnt think of it as theres an indie area and a non-indie area.
