Mystery Novelist Brings Sensory Sleuth To The Nelson Library

Being nosey is a good thing for a sleuth; having almost super-hero powers when it comes to smell is a bonus. The main character in Glynis Whitings mystery novel, A Nose for Death (Thistledown Press, 2013), has both attributes, and that makes for a great read. Whiting brings Dr. Joan Nosey Parker to the Nelson Public Library on Tuesday, August 20 at 7:30 pm. Chemist Joan Parker smells something fishy when she receives a surprise invitation to a high school reunion. She attends, only to become prime suspect in the murder of Roger Rimmer, a man with whom she has had more than a passing association. When the only person who can explain why she was invited to the reunion is found dead, Joan turns her olfactory skills to the investigation. A Nose for Death won the Vancouver Mayors Award for Emerging Literary Artist. Whiting has been writing professionally for over thirty years. Until recently, her focus has been writing, directing, and producing films, such as the award-winning documentaries Weight of the World and Worst Case Scenerio (National Film Board). Writing is a compulsion, says Whiting, I become totally immersed in research and I love figuring out what makes people tick. Excessive water use during summer months draws down the reservoir level reducing storage capacity. Storage is required for firefighting purposes and for backup supply. The City of Nelson thanks Water Smart residents for their cooperation.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Roger Allan Leroux, loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Son and Friend. Born in Chilliwack, BC November 17, 1946, Roger moved to Leduc, AB as a toddler, then to Devon, AB where he started school. When he was seven the family moved to Creston. Roger attended both elementary and high school there and was involved in many sports such as baseball, basketball, hockey and boxing. It was in his teen years that he met and started dating Sigrid Parnell, who was 15 at the time. At the age of 17, Roger attended hairdressing school in Surrey, which he enjoyed, but after finishing decided not to pursue it as a career. In 1966 he moved to 100 Mile House to work in the plywood plant. In 1968 he married Sigrid Parnell and they made their home in 100 Mile House where their daughters Tammy Lynn and Nichole Leigh were both born. During the years they resided in100 Mile House, Roger was actively involved in Search and Rescue andbelonged to the Volunteer Fire Department. The family moved to Meadow Creek in 1976, where Roger and Sigrid bought the Meadow Creek Caf. After 2 years they sold the caf and continued to live in Cooper Creek while Roger worked at Remco Cedar Mill for several years, then Meadow Creek Cedar for several years. In the 37 years of living in the Lardeau Valley, he was actively involved in the events and fundraising of the Lardeau Valley Community Hall, and spent countless hours each year developing Glacier Creek Park, which he loved and enjoyed for many years with his family and friends. Rogers passion was hunting and fishing with his grandsons. In March 2012 Roger was diagnosed with cancer which took him away from us July 24, 2013. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Sigrid Leroux; daughters Tammy Berry, Nichole Leroux Bayoff (Dan); grandchildren Jared and Jesse Berry, Lauren, Tyler, and Tyson Bayoff; mother Hazel Leroux; sisters Linda (Grant) Romano, Sandi (Ed) Barton, and Barb Hanna. Roger was predeceased by his father Ernie Leroux in May 2011. We invite relatives and friends to join us for a Celebration of Life and Gathering on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Lardeau Valley Community Hall at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the BC Childrens Hospital or Hospice Society of North Kootenay Lake, Box 801, Kaslo, BC V0G 1M0 would be greatly appreciated.

After a full and rich life Josie passed away peacefully at the age of 95 at Elim Care Home in Surrey, BC. She was born in Mikado, Saskatchewan to Michael and Mary Furman, the second youngest of nine children. She moved to Procter, BC in her early twenties, where she met and married Fred Fransen in 1941. They spent the next 40 years in Sunshine Bay, operating a fruit passing in 1981, Josie moved closer to Nelson and several years later to Surrey. Josie was a kind and nurturing person who cared deeply for her family. She loved singing and dancing and had a love of learning and adventure, driving across Canada alone in her Toyota van at age 70. Her great sense be missed.

Free Composting Workshop

Passmore Poultry Pluckers, the West Kootenays poultry abattoir, is offering a free composting workshop this summer. The Use It All workshop aims to help you use waste materials from chicken processing. You can save valuable nutrients as fertilizer and reduce material going to landfills. There will be a demonstration about how to compost chicken feathers, intestines, heads and feet. The hour-long event will be held on Tuesday, August 27 from 7 pm to 8 pm and on Saturday, September 21 from 10 am to 11 am. This workshop is funded in part by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC through programs it delivers on behalf of Agriculture and AgriFood Canada and the BC Ministry of Agriculture, so there will be no charge for the event. ANKORS and the AIDS Walk for Life are hosting a silent auction to raise money for the Foundation Fund. The Foundation Fund is in place to support HIV positive residents of the West Kootenay/Boundary region to offset medical fees, travel expenses, or to subsidize costs for nutritional supplements, dental work, food security, etc. Alongside logistical barriers, persons suffering from HIV/AIDS generally face stigma, oppression and discrimination. Extra Fruit And Vegetables?

Harvest Rescue is a program organized by the Nelson Food Cupboard where trained volunteer pickers will come to your yard and harvest fruits, veggies and any other edible goodies to share with those in need! A third of the harvest goes to the donor, a third goes to the volunteer picking the fruit and a third is donated to the Nelson Food Cupboard. The food cupboard will then distribute it to its members and to other social service organizations. In its seventh year, the program is seeking more fruit tree donors. Not enough time to pick your fruit tree this summer? Volunteers will pick it, split it and clean up the compost to avoid interactions with bears. Call and register your tree in advance to avoid food waste! This will ensure that volunteers are available and will help to keep both bears and humans safe. Please note that harvest rescue cannot accept worm-infested, wind fallen, bruised or slashed fruit. Fresh surplus produce of any kind can also be dropped off at the Nelson Food Cupboard on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9 am and 1 pm. Thank you to all of the hard-working volunteers who make this program possible and successful in our community! When I decided to quit my position as Sales Manager with Castlegar Toyota, I was filled with trepidation. I had enjoyed ten rewarding years working with fellow staff and helping customers. If I left, what would become of the friendships and relationships I had fostered? I had always dreamed of owning my own business, and knew in my heart the time was right. With my familys support I tendered my resignation. I believe selling cars does not have to be a nasty profession. Rather, I believe in working with customers one on one, to provide a reliable vehicle, at a cost that fits their budget, while providing the best customer service experience I can muster.
I believe this type of experience will foster lifelong relationships. With that as my focus, I have opened a small used vehicle dealership: JELD Auto Sales Ltd. The name derives from the first initials of my familys names. Jim, Ed, Laurie and Danica. Every time I look at the name, I say to myself Jim, you had better behave yourself. Your entire familys reputation is at stake here. I have hired Brad Jansen as my financial services manager. Brad will also help out with sales. Together we have over 20 years experience in the automotive industry. I am very proud to have him as a member of my team.
