Navigating the Global: Intro Current in our world- we live it day to day Operating in a global sphere Making sense

l sphere Making sense out of the global world by retreating in their own global sphere Creates conflict between generations due to the changing world Defining world of the global world is mobility Boundaries of space and time have been erased and defaced Describing our world today, we are living it The individual is buffeted by global forces Overlapped between belonging and this Global forces: challenge, destabilised, confused and excite us Not just economic: also social, cultural, philosophical, religious, technological (think about for creative) Individuals often feel remote from these forces and do not understand how we are being impacted by global forces Understanding our world by stories, through mythology that make sense of the other culture and try to explain our relationship to the world Histories, novels, poems, movies, mythologies, art all try to make sense of and explain the world and their culture Art tries to make sense of things, some sort of order out of the chaos of events Humans like to believe that they are part of a bigger story, have a role to play HAS TO HAVE A MEANING What are the composers saying about the individuals perspective of the world, how do they make sense of the world Try to make sense of the forces of change and their impact on the individuals and communities lives What are theses forces, how do they collaborate to affect identity, how are they represented in the text, how do the composers construct their stories about these changing realities Thematic concerns etc., what choices do they make (composers), how do we respond to those choices, what values are embedded in the text, how can we see those values coming through, what do the values say about the text, how do we value the text, why are they valued, what do they have to say about our world, Subtle englishlisation throughout the world, people are beginning to battle against it Western colonialisation Emergence of Chinese cultural domination In this technologically connected world cultural flows are not only 1 directional The global affects the global and the global affects the local (cultural flows go both ways) Not everyone experiences globalisation in the same way, eg different social hierarchies of nation eg Afghanistan Born into a tourist culture eg in Bali traditions and values have become spectacles Objects become commoditised, commodities lost their essential values Collapse of meaning Ie affect on bali after the bombing suicide rate rose, when tourism dropped by up to 40% Local cultures becoming theme parks

People dont experience globalisation the same way After 9/11 what does it mean for our understanding of globalisation, how are these events now being impacted? What do events of terrorism ect mean for globalisation? Retreat into local cultural values? Will the struggle to be free from dictatorship transfer into a ocular dictatorship? (Happened in iran) Underpinned by philosophical ideas of how these effect our lives and people? Global forms of protest ie twitter, to show the rest of the world Global connectedness which can result in global reaction Global communication efface, transcend boundaries of space and time esp national boundaries (boundaries of nation states are artificial) Diasporic communities (means people who are leaving their country and moving into different world) One foot in local culture, other foot in multicultural global environment, can lead to conflicted loyalties Homoduplex- have to contend with two aspects to our self Inhabit local and global cultures at the same time Marshall macluen (global village) wiki spaces Globalisation has resulted in a global village We are constantly linked What has this done to local communities? What has it done to intercultural relationships? Must think of what came before The fundamental act of the modern age is the concept of the world as a picture Understand our world through the lens of a camera Think of how we respond to films ect Notion of the image is problematizes by the controlling influence of the editors Reliable view of the observer has been undermined because it is not face to face Information that we get is filtered through other peoples representations of the events Digital divide: unequal flow of communication media Some large stakeholders can manipulate the flow of information throughout the global village Friction between existing values of a culture and media relations outside (cultural abrasion) Cultural deflation: when culture is influenced by foreigners Overview: in tradtional pre modernism societies people lived in local homogenes groups Changes were very slow due to geographical imperatives & time What defines globalisation is speed Religion, beliefs ect were embodied from stories told and decisions were reflected from their culture Local began to make way for the global Collapse of the futile government Technological revolution is changing the way people live forever Pressure on individuals & communities to reinvent themselves Everything is negotiated,

Unifying global culture rejects the device-ivness of local traditions, customs and religious sects Can deflate us and empower us Ways of thinking
